THE RESETTLEMENT OF KANE COUNTY,

1870-1880 Initial Resettlement of Kanab Serious efforts at resettling Kane County began in 1870 with the arrival of a company of immigrants from the Cottonwood area of the Salt Lake Valley. In the 1870s the town of Kanab grew in spurts as companies of settlers were sent there from other settlements. Three waves of settlers recolonized the area. First, were those from the initial group of the 1860s who returned with Jacob Hamblin and a few others to the vicinity of the old Kanab fort in the late 1860s to begin resettlement efforts. They were joined in 1870 by the group led by Levi Stewart that left the Cottonwood area of the Salt Lake Valley at the direction of Brigham Young. The last g r o u p came out of the M o r m o n Muddy Mission in Nevada's Moapa Valley and arrived in Kane County in 1871. Brigham Young and a party of general authorities of the M o r m o n church visited Kane County settlements in the spring of 1870. The church leaders laid out a fort for the settlers at Pipe Spring, hopeful that conditions were more favorable for resettlement. The 73
