Quarterly grew from and is part of a National Endowment for the Humanities project focusing upon regional characteristics in Utah and neighboring states. Initiated in 1977, the Endowment's Interpreting Local History project in concept grew out of the Bicentennial States and the Nation Series under which the identity and character of each of the fifty states and the District of Columbia were described.
