Standing on the Walls of Time: Ancient Art of Utah’s Cliffs and Canyons

How Not to Do Aerial Archaeology in Southeastern Utah

While it is a very viable archaeological method in Europe and the Middle East, it is under-utilized in the United States despite the amenability to vast portions of the desert west. Early forays by Charles Lindbergh and others into aerial archaeology in the American SW proved popular with the public, but the methods and procedures, with a few important exceptions, never caught on with the archaeologists in the region. In this presentation, we’ll examine the history and application of aerial archaeology in the SW and explore recent my misadventures in learning the ropes of aerial archaeology and attempting to apply it in southeastern Utah.

Smaller groups are encouraged to make an appointment at least a day in advance so the staff is properly prepared. Special appointments may be made for other possible times by contacting the museum. Museum Tours for Schools consists of a museum tour and a city hall tour, including city council chambers and the Mayor’s office, if the Mayor’s schedule allows. School tours are best scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursday. Wednesdays may be scheduled is necessary, but the “city hall” component of the tour may be eliminated due to conflicts with space. Wednesday tours cannot accommodate more than 2 classrooms. We are a small museum! Russell took nearly 1,000 photographs of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1868 and 1869. Today his photographs are analyzed as art, as historical evidence, and as cultural objects. But who was he as a person? Daniel Davis, author of Across the Continent: the Union Pacific Photographs of Andrew J. Russell, (co-published by University of Utah Press and Utah State Historical Society, 2018,) will discuss Russell’s background and personality and how that influenced the photographs he made. Davis will examine Russell’s images as well as contemporary sources and explain how he came to the conclusion that Russell was, “an ordinary man caught up in extraordinary events. Taken as a whole, the photographs show that Russell did not want viewers to forget who built the Union Pacific. His images celebrate working people – masons working on bridge foundations, freighters and their wagons, surveyors with their transits, engine crews posed on their engines, as well as tracklayers, laborers, cooks, machinists, carpenters, graders, teamsters, and clerks pushing paper.

However, “Lagoon” wasn’t its original name and the park has moved locations once. From big band to opera to horse and auto racing to bowling and wrestling to high diving, Lagoon has hosted a variety of events over the decades -- besides its many thrill rides. This lecture will highlight what you probably don’t know about Lagoon’s extensive history. Lynn Arave graduated from Weber State University. He worked as a reporter/editor for the Deseret News for 32 years. He has written 5 books and has a popular blog, “The Mystery of Utah History,” often utilized often by fourth and seventh grade Utah history classes. This lecture coincides with Park City Museum’s traveling exhibition called Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland which will be on display from April 6, 2019 to May 25, 2019. Adapted from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art’s flagship exhibition Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland, 1861–2008, this new traveling exhibition from NEH on the Road will explore America’s playground as a place and as an idea, examining its persistent presence in the American imagination.

Event Description: Danger Cave is an iconic archaeological site in the Eastern Great Basin. Evidence of human use of the site goes back 12,000 years and archaeological excavation in the 1940s, 1980s and 1990s revealed detailed aspects of human adaptation to the Great Basin environment. Jukebox Cave is also a large cave with archaeological deposits going back at least 8000 years.

This area was subject of a long-running effort to protect the rock art from damage due to target shooting in the area. With the efforts of BLM, SITLA, and other partners the area is now closed to target shooting in order to preserve these important pieces of the area’s cultural history.
