Who Needs This Class This course is ideal for those who wish to gain insight into business essentials and walk away with research-backed strategies and skills to immediately implement in any organization.
Modules Gain insight into business essentials, and walk away with research-backed strategies and skills to implement immediately in our following foundational classes: Unit 1: Prescriptive Analytics: Optimization Presenting Faculty | Don Wardell, Ph.D. This hands-on course will use Microsoft Excel to build spreadsheet models that include key performance indicators linked to variables under the decision makers’ control. We will then use Excel’s Solver tool to find the solution that optimizes the key performance indicator. Finally, we will apply the techniques to applications in various functions of a business. Unit 2: The Value of Economics: How (& How Well) Do Markets Work? Presenting Faculty | Scott Schaefer, Ph.D. In this class, we tackle some big questions: What is value? What is the role of markets in creating value? How do prices guide the behavior of companies and individuals? The answers will give insight into the role of business in a free enterprise economy and the conditions under which markets serve people’s interests. Unit 3: Operations Management and Leading Change Presenting Faculty | Manu Goyal, Ph.D. Matching supply with demand is a challenge for firms: excess supply is costly; inadequate supply irritates customers. This course will explore how firms organize their operations to deliver products to the right customers at the right time. Unit 4: Finance and Accounting for Decision-Making Presenting Faculty | Brian Cadman, Ph.D. Using an example of a small business, we will learn how to create and evaluate a budget and raise money for organizations. We will then learn how to account for operations, assess performance, and consider investing in growth. Unit 5: Making Strategic Business Decsions Presenting Faculty | Bonita Austin, MBA This course will teach you to look for strategic problems and opportunities to decide which ones you should tackle. You will learn how to structure problems, get to the underlying cause, and choose alternatives.
