CELEBRATE FAMILY. CELEBRATE LIFE. At the Utah Shakespeare Festival, 2019 is a year to celebrate the diversity of families in all their richness, including their strengths, weaknesses, joys, and sorrows. The family members in this year’s eight plays run the gamut from the screwball dysfunction of Jacob’s twelve sons in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat to the complex familial relationships in Hamlet. They illuminate the sometimes tender, sometimes brutal relationships between brothers in The Price and between spouses in Macbeth, as well as the exquisitely intricate parent-child relationship in Every Brilliant Thing. These characters, as well as those in The Book of Will, The Conclusion of Henry VI: Parts Two and Three, and Twelfth Night, reflect a bit of our own families, in all their variety. Through the laughter and tears, the arguments and reconciliations, the characters in these plays (just like us) are searching for love, acceptance, catharsis, and meaning in our families and our lives. We hope you’ll join us as we celebrate this compelling human medley in all its richness, varied colors, and irrepressible joys. We’ll save you a seat! Brian Vaughn, artistic director Frank Mack, executive producer Fred C. Adams, founder

JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT
Lyrics by Tim Rice • Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber
Directed by Brad Carroll Randall L. Jones Theatre Sponsored by Zions Bank It’s bright! It’s loud! It’s technicolor! It’s Joseph’s new coat! And it sets the tone for a frolicking Biblical satire filled with vaudevillian tunes, country and western swings, calypso, and good old rock and roll. This classic musical has been going strong for fifty years and guarantees to leave everyone in the family humming for days. Media Sponsor: Deseret News

THE BOOK OF WILL By Lauren Gunderson
Directed by Melinda Pfundstein Engelstad Shakespeare Theatre Sponsored by Cedar City/Brian Head Tourism Bureau Without William Shakespeare, we wouldn’t have the world’s most memorable plays— and without his friends, we wouldn’t know he wrote them. After the Bard’s death, his quick-witted fellow actors realize that the plays they love are being muddled and even lost; they know they need to publish a collection of his plays. Thus, they launch a warm-hearted and often comic mission to print “the book” of his plays and save his legacy. Media Sponsors: Fox 5 and Cherry Creek Radio

Driven by his father’s ghost and the corrupt society all around him, he plots and withdraws, schemes and retreats. Written at the height of Shakespeare’s career, this powerful examination of the human psyche is the Bard’s most mature and chilling revenge tragedy. Media Sponsor: Vegas PBS

TWELFTH NIGHT By William Shakespeare Directed by Sam White Engelstad Shakespeare Theatre Sponsored by Patricia Andersen Orsino loves Olivia (who won’t give him the time of day). Olivia loves Viola (whom she thinks is a boy). Viola loves Orsino (who doesn’t know she’s a girl). Malvolio loves being in love; and Sir Andrew, Toby Belch, and Maria love life to its fullest. EXPERIENCE MORE FESTIVAL Explore backstage. Watch our technicians change the set from the matinee to the evening play. Have lunch with an artist. These ticketed events are the perfect addition to a perfect day. See pages 20–27 for times, locations, and prices.
BACKSTAGE TOURS
Peek behind the scenery and into the Festival’s various production areas to see how all the enchantment comes together. Participants must be able to negotiate stairs.
REPERTORY MAGIC
One of the most magical (and difficult) aspects of repertory theatre is the twice-a-day changeover. Lighting, scenery, props, costume, and sound technicians must hurry to change everything from the matinee show to the evening show. It is a fascinating and well-choreographed process. You can witness the scene change and ask questions as it is happening.
CURTAIN CALL LUNCHEONS
Sponsored by The Guild of the Utah Shakespeare Festival.
Have lunch and ask questions with Festival actors and artists. Luncheons begin at 12 noon and last about an hour. Dates and locations to be announced. Visit the website at bard.org/events#curtain-call-luncheons for the latest information.
COMPLETE THE CANON
The Utah Shakespeare Festival is in the midst of an exciting initiative to produce the entire canon of Shakespeare’s thirty-eight plays between 2012 and 2023. During these years, you may have more than one opportunity see such plays as Hamlet and Twelfth Night, but productions of some other plays will definitely be more rare. So start planning now; you don’t want to miss a single experience.
THE FESTIVAL HISTORY CYCLE
As part of the Complete-the-Canon Project, the Festival is producing all ten of Shakespeare’s history plays in chronological order, having begun with King John and Richard II in 2013, then Henry IV Part One in 2014, Henry IV Part Two in 2015, Henry V in 2016, Henry VI Part One in 2018, and The Conclusion of Henry VI: Parts Two and Three in 2019. Future years’ line-ups will include Richard III and Henry VIII. One of the goals of the History Cycle is to give a cohesiveness to these plays that will be engaging and dramatic for our audiences. 16
