DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A TECHNICAL COLLEGE AND A POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY Our community enjoys the benifts of two great institutions of higher learning that work together to help students reach their goals and achieve their potential. Washington County is the only area in a five-state region that is home to both a technical college (Dixie Technical College) and a polytechnic university (Utah Tech University). Technical colleges generally offer skill-specific programs and certificates for a particular career or trade that can often be completed in one year or less. Polytechnic universities also focus on applied, hands-on learning and career readiness, but in addition offer general education degrees along with more in-depth associate, bachelor, and graduate degrees. Examples of other polytechnic universities include Virginia Tech, Cal Poly, Texas Tech, and Georgia Tech. Both Dixie Technical College and Utah Tech University offer unique educational experiences and critical services that can be customized to fit individual preferences, goals, and career paths. Students can utilize a combination of both schools to discover what they enjoy while gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain a career that can support their families and help our local economy thrive.
