The Sun Belt Conference
Formed in 1976 the Sun Belt Conference quickly rose to the greatest heights of collegiate athletics by sending a team to the NCAA Final Four in the league’s first year of existence. Fast forward 36 years and the league again finds itself at the pinnacle of collegiate athletics as a member of the 11-league alliance of the Bowl Championship Series. Because of its status as a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision, the Sun Belt Conference has a permanent seat on the NCAA’s 18-member Board of Directors. As a result, the conference has a crucial voice on some of the most pressing issues in college athletics and will always have a role in the implementation of any future NCAA legislation and guidelines. The conference’s regional television partnership with Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS) and Cox Sports Television (CST) enables live telecasts of Sun Belt events to reach millions of households. The addition of volleyball, baseball and softball to the conference’s television package has resulted in more national and regional television exposure for the league than at any time in its history.

Towering pines, natural cypress wetlands, secluded fairways and impeccably manicured greens surround Grand Bear. This 18-hole, Jack Nicklaus Signature Course has the feel of Augusta and the excitement of Pinehurst. A wide array of hole layouts makes Grand Bear challenging, yet enjoyable for all. From the Grizzly Bear tees at 7,204 yards, the challenge is firm but fair; from the Teddy Bear tees at 4,802 yards, the layout is downright cuddly. The outgoing nine, which skirts the Little Biloxi River has superior golf holes, but the back nine is truly grand. Cypress wetlands rimmed with live oaks, gum trees, and old magnolias give way to the Big Biloxi River, its brilliant white-sand banks girding three of the last four holes.

Zack Fischer qualifies for the U.S. Open
UT Arlington grad Zack Fischer became UTA’s second all-time qualifier into the U.S. Open, joining Greg Gregory. Fischer won a 12 hole, sudden-death, playoff over PGA Tour veteran Ryan Palmer to earn a spot at Merion Golf Club. The 12-hole playoff was the longest in sectional qualifying history, taking place in Dallas. At Merion, Fischer fired a 82 and a 76 at a course in which no golfer shot par for the week and despite the struggles, didn’t erase what the golfer had accomplished. “It humbles you on how good you actually are,” said Fischer, a member of the 2011 Southland Conference championship team and 2009 SLC individual medalist. “I didn’t play that poorly. I was just flustered mentally after making some bogeys and doubles. Then I really started panicking and made more mistakes. The USGA really got what they wanted when it came to my mental game.” Fischer earned his first professional paycheck by making the cut at the 2013 HP Byron Nelson Championship in May.

Head golf coach Jay Rees has taken the Maverick golf program to new heights since arriving at UT Arlington in 1999. Rees, a three-time Southland Conference Coach of the Year, is leading the UTA program into the Sun Belt Conference. The Mavericks have made a NCAA Regional appearance as a team or with an individual from 2008-2013. Rees has also had a representative from UTA at the NCAAs in 12 of his 14 seasons. Rees, known for his knowledge of the short game, helped the Mavericks finish as the best short game team in the nation four times, according to golfstat. com. Rees’ players are among the best players in school history. The top 13 players in school history by stroke average have played for Rees at least one season. Rees has had 42 players named all-conference, including 24 first-team selections, 13 second team and six third team. Another nine were honorable mention all-conference. His teams have won 12 tournaments, posted 66 top-5 and 105 top-10 finishes, while his players have won 17 tournaments. UTA under Rees annually compete in a challenging schedule that features several of the country’s top tournaments, such as the Northern Intercollegiate, W.H. Tucker Invitational, Royal Oaks Intercollegiate, Wyoming Cowboy Desert Intercollegiate and Querencia Cabo Intercollegiate. Measuring the players against such top competition has prepared the Mavericks for success.

During the 2012-13 season, Rees coached Paul McConnell to the WAC Individual Championship and the Mavericks to a second-place team finish. McConnell was first-team All-WAC and Hunter Brown earned second-team honors. McConnell reached the NCAA Regionals and was a stroke shy of advancing to the NCAA Championship.

In 2010-11, Rees led the Mavericks to the Southland Conference championship on their home course. Rees was honored with his third SLC Coach of the Year award. Two of his players - Zack Fischer and Wes Worster - earned all-conference honors, while Paul McConnell was named the league’s Newcomer of the Year.The Mavericks also made another appearance in the NCAA Regionals. Rees has had 10 of his players named first-team all-conference for a total of 12 times while six players have earned second team honors on seven occasions. His teams have won 12 tournaments, posted 66 top-5 and 105 top-10 finishes, while his players have won 16 tournaments during his time. Rees’ first head coaching job came at his alma mater, Emporia State in Kansas. He was named the head coach at just 21 years of age, making him one of the youngest head coaches in college history. During his four-year run as Emporia State’s head coach, Rees developed an NAIA and NCAA Division II top-10 program and was named the district’s Coach of the Year four consecutive years from 1990-93. Rees and his wife Sandie reside in Arlington with his two stepsons Zane and Gage. Jay and Sandie have three dachshunds (Junie-Bee, Stormie and Merry), as well as a border collie named Mollie. Stuart Powell joined the UT Arlington golf program in 2005 as an assistant coach. Powell assists in practice, player developments and day-to-day operations of the Mavericks golf program. Powell served 26 years in the United States Army with tours in Vietnam, Germany and various installations in the United States. He served as a professor of military science at UT Arlington where he retired from the military. During his time in the military, Powell achieved the rank of colonel. He stayed active in golf as a competitor. He was club champion at the Fort Eustis Golf Club. Powell played on the Eagl mini tour for two seasons. He received his golf teaching certification and began teaching following the closure of the Eagl tour. He has been active as a professional golf instructor for nearly 20 years. Powell and his wife, Marsha, have two daughters (Kara and Brittany) and a son, Brandon. Kara Puckett and her husband, Kevin, have two children and live in the Mesquite area. Brittney Powell has one son, and lives in Hollywood, Calif., pursuing an acting career. Brandon Powell is a chef in St. Louis.

Office of the President
A visionary leader and accomplished scholar, Vistasp M. Karbhari took office in June 2013 as the eighth president of The University of Texas at Arlington. He is a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. As president, he is committed to advancing UT Arlington’s national and international profile while strengthening excellence in research and teaching and ensuring the success of the University’s 33,800 undergraduate and graduate students. Prior to joining UT Arlington, President Karbhari was provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Alabama in Huntsville from 2008 to 2013. During that time the university saw an increase in sponsored research expenditures, added more than a dozen academic programs that highlighted academic strengths and met the workforce needs of the community, successfully integrated the divisions of academic and student affairs, enhanced student life, and established a student success center that boosted retention and graduation rates. He also helped raise significant private funds for student scholarships, faculty development, and endowed chairs. He was a professor at the University of California, San Diego from 1995 to 2008. In addition to his research and teaching commitments at UCSD, he served in several administrative and leadership roles at the department, college, and university levels, including in the Faculty Senate.
Dr. Vistasp M. Karbhari
A prolific researcher, President Karbhari is an expert in the processing and mechanics of composites, durability of materials, infrastructure rehabilitation, and multi-threat mitigation and has authored or co-authored more than 460 papers in journals and conference proceedings and edited or co-edited four books. He holds one patent and has served as principal investigator or co-principal investigator on more than $37 million in research projects. He is a fellow of ASM International, which serves the materials science and engineering profession, and a fellow of the International Institute for FRP in Construction, which is dedicated to the use of fiber-reinforced polymer composites. He serves as the associate editor of the Journal of Civil Structural Health Monitoring, as the American editor for the International Journal of Materials and Product Technology, and as an editorial board member for Composite Structures, the ASTM Journal for Testing and Evaluation, Structural Engineering and Mechanics, and the International Journal of Sustainable Materials and Structural Systems. President Karbhari earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in structures, both from the University of Poona in India, and a Ph.D. with a dissertation in composite materials from the University of Delaware. During his more than 20 years in higher education, he has received numerous awards for research, teaching, and innovation. He and his wife, Lisa, reside in Arlington, Texas.
Engineering Research Building
Collaboration and research form the foundation for the 234,000-square-foot Engineering Research Building, the last of three College of Engineering expansion projects and the centerpiece of the Research Quadrangle. A March 4 ribbon cutting heralds completion of the building, which opened for classes and research in January 2011. The state-of-the-art structure houses laboratories, classrooms, and office space to accommodate many of the national research projects of the College of Engineering and the College of Science. The Bioengineering Department and some College of Science faculty work together in the four-story east wing on research into medical imaging, tissue engineering, and other issues that impact health and daily living. The Computer Science and Engineering Department occupies the six-story north wing.
MAVERICK ACTIVITY CENTER
The MAC, a $34.5 million recreation facility, is approximately 190,000 sq. ft. and includes: • 20,000 square foot weight and fitness room (90+ pieces of cardio equipment, 4 circuit training units & a free weight area) • 4 Multipurpose rooms — yoga, martial arts, aerobics, and more, 5 Indoor basketball courts, 9 Volleyball courts, Indoor soccer gymnasium, 2 Indoor tracks -- 1/16 mile and 1/9 mile, 5 Racquetball courts, 10 Badminton courts, Game room and table tennis. • A social corridor with group seating, 2 Outdoor Volleyball Courts, 2 Outdoor Basketball Courts and a Climbing Wall.
THE GREEN AT COLLEGE PARK The Planetarium offers live stargazing and pre-recorded programs to the public, school groups, and UT Arlington students all year round. Using state-of-the-art technology and a 60-ft. dome screen; the Planetarium is an immersive space theater facility with endless capabilities. Our shows are one-hour long and consist of ~30-minutes of stargazing of tonight’s night sky presented by a space scientist, and another ~30-minutes pre-recorded program.
The Green at College Park is an inviting 4.62-acre space for students, neighbors, and friends to gather and relax. Located just to the south of College Park Center, it has a large lawn, native grasses, adaptive plants, and a curved stone wall that offers seating. It connects to the city’s Center Street Trail system, which provides vehicular, pedestrian, and bike access to nearby points of interest, including the University, downtown Arlington, Levitt Pavilion, and more.
College Park District is the most ambitious project in UT Arlington history—practically a campus in and of itself. Spanning more than 20 acres, the $160 million development is a place where students, neighbors, and visitors can intermingle while enjoying stellar entertainment, sports, and restaurants. The impressive complex includes a broad range of amenities, with the University’s special events arena—College Park Center—as its focal point. Our Mission is a committed focus on a triad of athletic development, injury prevention, and rigorous training. This results in developing each student-athlete’s innate ability to the fullest. The triad hinges on training the student-athlete in a manner to attain physical development and structural balance from top to bottom and front to back by utilizing a broad spectrum of Olympic lift variation, squat, press, and pulling movements, with a major emphasis placed of developing the posterior chain. Sound techniques, scientific principals, and a high level of intensity and motivation ensure that our student-athletes are trained specifically and individually to be champions in their sport. UT Arlington features two full-size weight rooms; one located in College Park Center and the other featured at Maverick Stadium.
SPORTS MEDICINE
The Athletic Training Staff of the University of Texas at Arlington consists of the head, associate, assistant, and student athletic trainers. Working with team physicians, our goal is to provide quality medical care for the student athletes of UT Arlington. Each member of the Sports Medicine Team will work to provide leadership, advice and service necessary to prevent injury, care for the injured and sick, and rehabilitate and recondition the injured athlete.
