FALL 2018 STUDY ABROAD FAIR

The Fall 2018 Study Abroad Fair saw record attendance numbers, with more than 270 students passing through. On Wednesday, September 12th, representatives from seven international program providers, two academic departments, and the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships attended the fair to speak with students interested in studying abroad. Attendees spoke with providers about the many study abroad options available to UTC students. They also learned about ways to get involved on campus with the Center for Global Education. Fair attendees enjoyed sampling world cuisine, including aloo tikki from India, chicken adobo skewers from the Philippines, and Swedish meatballs from Sweden, to name a few.

GLOBAL SPOTLIGHT: GERMANY

UTC students got to experience German Culture right here in Chattanooga.

Global Spotlight is a new platform for international students to share their cultures with the UTC community. On September 18th, the Center for Global Education hosted the first Global Spotlight, featuring Germany. During an hour-long presentation, four German students informed international and domestic students about their homeland. The students covered a broad range of cultural topics — from stereotypes that Germans commonly face, to their nation’s history, to how they cheer for sports teams.

This insightful presentation took place just days before Germany’s annual Oktoberfest celebration. Event attendees also had the chance to ask questions and hear the German students’ perspectives on living in the U.S. The first Global Spotlight allowed students to experience German culture right here in Chattanooga through interaction with international students.

THE COMPLETE EXPERIENCE

Yixiang, an international student from China, is in the final semester of his MBA. He says the energy and growth at UTC are unlike anywhere else he has been. He sees these qualities in himself: “I want to always be growing and moving forward.”

In this energetic environment, Yixiang thrives — attending guest lectures, participating in campus events, and discussing business ideas with classmates and instructors. He credits one of the Rollins College of Business faculty, Dr. Beverly Brockman, with helping him succeed at UTC. “Dr. Brockman’s classes are advanced, but she is able to communicate the concepts in a way that makes them easy to understand,” he says.

Yixiang plans to return to China after graduating, but he will take the energy of UTC home with him. He encourages current and future students to “step outside your comfort zone; otherwise you miss the complete [U.S.] university experience. The classroom is just the beginning — the full experience comes from attending campus events and exploring the cultural environment on and around campus.”

Lauren Dunn’s interest in sustainability and the environment led her to Cape Town, South Africa, in Spring 2018. There, she participated in sustainable development and resource management programs which were both specific to Cape Town and globally focused. She will build on these experiences in the future, when she plans to pursue a graduate degree in environmental management.

Lauren encourages anyone thinking about studying abroad to not limit themselves with expectations. She says, “I think anyone who is going to study abroad should keep an open mind about it. You never really know what you’re going to get until you’re actually there. Just take it in stride and keep an open mind, and you will get a lot out of it.”
