MOODY FEATURE Terry Galloway’s “You Are My Sunshine” sheds light on deaf culture Written by SLOAN WYATT Terry Galloway’s “You Are My Sunshine” is at the crossroads of humor and sincerity. The solo performance follows Galloway’s life post-cochlear implants, raising questions about whether being deaf is a lifestyle or a condition to be treated. Galloway, a nationally recognized writer, director, and performer of stage, radio, video, and film, began the production after receiving cochlear implants in 2010. These implants enabled her to perceive sound, replacing the function of her damaged inner ear. The decision to get these implants, however, was not simple. Unlike hearing aids, which only intensify surrounding sound, cochlear implants provide sound signals to the brain. While people not within nor familiar with the deaf community may see this as strictly advantageous, there is much debate within the deaf community surrounding the invention. “The deaf culture views the implant as a ‘fix’ for deaf people and they do not think that they need to be fixed,” said Senior Fellow and fourth-year CSD/Audiology major Conner Jansen. In “You Are My Sunshine,” Galloway seeks to address both sides of this argument through the perspective of her own journey. By bringing this production to Moody, Jansen is hoping to introduce people to the complexities of this debate. “This [presentation] will give a really good synopsis of the beauty of the deaf culture and also the science of audiology as well as speech pathology,” said Jansen. “It’s going to be a

little jarring but I think that being in college, we need some things that are a little more jarring for us and things that we’ve never thought about before.” Jansen came up with the premise for this event last summer when he realized that the Senior Fellows’ speakers lacked CSD representation. This awareness led him to ASL Professor Mike Wynne who introduced him to Galloway’s work. Alongside Director of Moody Honors Dave Junker and Senior Administrative Associate Sarah Sutton, Jansen was able to bring his dream to life. “I am so excited to host Terry Galloway for many reasons,” said Professor Junker. “Not least is that I’m in awe of her remarkable memoir, ‘Mean Little Deaf Queer.’ It’s a remarkable book by a remarkable communicator, and I’m going to bring it for her to sign.” Even though much of Galloway’s work nowadays focuses on disability activism, she still has an impressive resume apart from her advocacy. Galloway has four solo shows, a memoir, and has co-founded three community-based theaters. In addition, she has a lengthy list of grants, fellowships, and awards. The KLRU show Khan-du, however, changed the course of her career. Targeted towards disabled children, Khan-du featured a full roster of actors with both mental and physical disabilities. In 1979, Galloway began with a starring role on the show and by 1980, became a co-writer. Khan-du is credited with piquing her interest in disability advocacy.
