UTNY
So you’ve heard of UTLA, but what about UTNY? By MADISON BATEY As Moody students, we know everything about UTLA and its success, but what do we know about UT’s new semester abroad program in New York? Because the information was just released on Sep. 24, I’m going to bet you don’t know a lot. Here’s some insight into the program with information from Professor Matt McGlone: What is UTNY? UTNY is an opportunity for students to get real-time experience for various majors not only in the communication field but also for those seeking careers in finance, business, and design in the heart of corporate America. Students will be able to learn from professionals, experts, and talented alumni from various areas while also gaining experience through internships. Why pick UTNY? UTNY is and incredibly unique program that combines Moody, the McCombs School of Business, and the College of Fine Arts. This mix will provide UTNY a distinctive blend of personalities that will enrich the program overall. According to Professor McGlone, there are three aspects that distinguish the program from others: “[f]irst, it is very career-focused. Over the semester, students will do an internship at a city-based organization in addition to their classroom-based courses. Second, the coursework is designed to promote students’ ‘urban literacy,’ teaching them how to navigate work and life in one of the world’s greatest cities. Third, there will be many opportunities for students to network with numerous professionals in organizations across the city, many of whom are UT alumni.” Everything happens while you intern and gain twelve credit hours

(nine for the summer semester) toward your degree. Who can apply for UTNY and when? If you have a willingness to try something new and sixty hours of completed coursework, then you are eligible to apply. Applications for the inaugural class will be opening on November 1st and will go through November 31st. The program hopes to have between thirty and forty students for Fall 2019. Where do students stay and how much will UTNY cost? Students who attend a semester of UTNY will pay regular tuition fees with program costs akin to other study abroad programs offered by UT. Students will also pay for room and board, travel, and incidental fees. It may seem like a lot, but there are scholarships available to students by applying to the Financial Aid Office. It sounds great, but I’m still hesitant to apply. Because it is a new program, we understand there may be some hesitation. “New York City is an exciting place, but many people are intimidated by it. They call to mind Frank Sinatra singing ‘if you can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere’ and then worry they can’t make it themselves. UTNY is expressly designed to show you how to make it there. Through a combination of housing in the heart of Manhattan, city-focused courses, hands-on experience in the workplace, trips to various businesses and cultural institutions, and connections with UT’s vast network of NYC-based alumni, you can learn not only how to make it there, but how to make it big,” said Professor McGlone.
