A Second Chance at Studying Abroad
Written by Emma Bittner

fter in-person classes last semester ended abruptly and all study abroad programs were cancelled one afternoon before spring break, summer and fall study abroad applications are looming again. Will hopes of spending a summer in Europe be ruined once again? Is it safe to go abroad during a pandemic? These questions haunt students as deadlines approach and they stare at the blank pages of their essays. Students across UT-Austin are hoping for another chance to study abroad. With some spring programs tentatively planning to go on like normal, there is hope for summer programs and faculty-led Maymesters. With the deadline around the corner, students are nervous to apply, reluctant to pay the non-refundable $75 application fee — especially while the future of these programs are not solidified. Spending a summer abroad is something students dream about when they enter college. The programs are incredible opportunities for students to get one-of-a-kind experiences; however, the cost can hold many people back from pursuing these dreams. Texas Global has dozens of study abroad scholarships to make the programs more accessible for all students. In addition to UT-Austin scholarships, a lot of outside scholarships are available to give funding that helps cover program and traveling fees. Your study abroad advisor can help iron out all the details and make the application process a lot smoother and easy to understand. The Maymester applications, found on Texas Global, are shorter than your average application. In addition to two 250-word essays, the applications require a faculty recommendation. While you could finish the application in one afternoon, I wouldn’t wait until the night of Nov. 14 to start.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when working on your application: Recommendation letters -Ask a faculty member who knows you. -Go to Zoom office hours and ask — don’t just send an email. That personal note takes five minutes of your time but goes a long way. Short Answer Responses -Be authentic and genuine. -These are intended to help the admissions staff get a sense of who you are and what your dreams are, so share personal stories in your response. -Do research about the country you hope to travel to and include information about that country in your short answer. Make sure you connect what that country offers to what your goals are.

“The pandemic has upended any sense of normalcy that comes with the collegiate experience, so we wanted to reach out to Moody students and see how they’re making their own sense of normalcy at-home.”

A First Step to Acknowledgement Written by Emma Bittner

hile 2020 has kept us on our toes and concerned for what is coming next, a few good things have come out of this year. When the semester started, you may have noticed something new in your syllabi. Many syllabi now have a land acknowledgement section. Last semester, UT-Austin’s Senate of College Councils passed legislation to include this acknowledgement, which recognizes that the land our University is on once belonged to Indigenous people. While this section is small, it is crucial in helping students understand the University’s history. This acknowledgement names the specific American Indian and Indigenous communities whose land the school took over. This is a small step in restituting respect to those whose land the university took, but it opens up opportunities for new conversations about how we view and teach American history. In the past, public high schools taught a very white-washed version of American history; however, as parts of the curriculum have been removed, a new version of this history is being explained. We have a lot to learn and so much more to acknowledge, but this is a step in the right direction from the University.
