E. HOLCOMB 7

To Dr. John 1. Waller, Dean of the Graduate Division, we dedicate this 1957Flowsheet, in gratitude for the service he has rendered this school and its students for the past twenty-five years. Dr. Waller has taught since 1906, except for time out for graduate work and overseas duty in World War I. He came to Texas Western in 1931to serve as Chairman of the enlarged Department of History and Government, when the college was authorized to offer a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1940,when the Graduate Council was established, Dr. Waller was made its first chairman. Since that time he has served in this capacity. We of the Flowsheet are proud to present this annual to this man who has been an integral part of Texas Western's growth.

HISTORY OF TEXAS WESTERN COLLEGE El Paso's' own college was created in 1913 as the College of Mines and Metallurgy by a legislative act. This act charged the institution with teaching and research in mining and metallurgy and allied subjects and placed it under the control of the University of Texas. The school opened in September. 1914. in the building of the former El Paso Military Institute. which was donated by the city of El Paso. In 1916 the main building burned, resulting in a decision to move to the present site on the west side of Mount Franklin. The Legislature voted an emergency appropriation of $100.000 for new buildings. The name was changed to Texas Western College on June 1. 1949. to recognize the expansion of the curriculum into various fields.

STUDENT UNION BUILDING - Better known as the S.U.B., the Student Union Building is the center of social life on the campus. Here is located a coop store, a snack bar, the Student Association office, the publication offices, men's, women's, and faculty lounges, and a ballroom with a stage. This building was built at a cost of $200,000. The students, through the Student Association, bonded themselves to pay $50,000 of the amount, while the College paid the remaining $150,000 out of local funds and gifts.

KIDD FIELD AND HOLLIDAY HALL The Miner's stadium was begun in 1921 at a cost of $11,000. It was without a name until 1933, when the stadium was named for John W. Kidd, dean of the engineering school from 1914 until 1946. Adjoining Kidd Field is Holliday Hall, which was constructed in 1932. Here was the center of Border Conference sports and the location for assemblies and dances for many years. This building was named for Tom Holliday, who was engaged to coach the Mines' squad in 1921.

Mike Brumbelow completed his seventh season as head coach of Texas Western by being selected by his fellow coaches to be Border. Conference "Coach of the Year," the second time in three years he has been named to this honor. He led the Miners to their most successful season with a record of 9 wins and 1 loss, sweeping all Border Conference games without tie or defeat to win their first conference title in history. The climax to such a fine season was fitting, an invitation to be host team in the Sun Bowl. Mike's teams have been noted for their fine defensive play and a thorough knowledge of fundamentals. He is held in highest regard by the men who are the best judges of a coach's ability, the coaches themselves. The Texas Western football fans also give him their wholehearted support. Perhaps the highest tribute that can be paid him is to say that the men who play for him want to give him their best, every game.

COACH GEORGE McCARTY This year the Miner Basketball squad finished one of their finest seasons. Coach George McCarty led his men to a record of 15 wins and 8 losses. He coached them to their second Border Conference win, the first since 1941. The players that have worked with Coach McCarty hold him in their minds with respect and admiration. STUDENT COUNCIL This year the Student Council has attempted to increase participation in student activities and interest in student government. The first step toward this goal was to lower the price of the S. A. card and yet offer more activities to S. A. members. To increase interest in student government, class officers were requested to attend all Student Council meetings, and organizations were invited to send a representative to the meetings. As a result of the efforts of the Student Council. an average of fifty people now take an active part in student government each Monday night. The interest and participation in Student Council has allowed this governing body to expand, thus offering more to the individual student in his campus life. Committees have been established to review campus organizations, traffic problems. freshman orientation, academic problems. and disciplinary problems. Permanent additions to the campus include a marquee. activity signs for the S.U.B.. and our glass burro. The Student Union Board was created this fall to increase on-campus activities.

WAR MEMORIAL CANON This canon, on the lawn of the Museum Building, was presented to Texas Western College eight years ago. It was sent by the War Department in fulfilment of a plan to give to the educational institutions of the country two or three war trophies. This particular gun is a German anti-tank canon, which was captured in the early part of World War II. By the end of the war it was an obsolete model. since much heavier guns were then being built to withstand the new armored tanks.

PHYSICS BUILDING-This building, first known as Old Main, is one of the four original buildings on the campus. It was the first of the four to be completed in 1917,and in it were housed the administration offices, museum, library, classrooms, physics, and geology labs. The Tibetan style architecture is found in this first building. In 1950 Old Main was remodeled. Modern lighting equipment was installed and the interior was painted, as well as changes in the internal structure.

KELLYHALL One of the oldest buildings on the campus and formerly the boy's dormitory is Kelly Hall. Today Kelly is outstanding as the home of KVOF. This is the only FM station in this section of the country. It is a non-commercial, educational station which directs most of its programs to listening groups in the El Paso Public Schools. From two until eight P. M. the station is programmed for the average listener. KVOFis operated entirely by TWC students working for radio broadcasting degrees.
