Texas Western Miners Texas Western College El Paso, Texas Dear Miners: To guide you through the 1959 Flowsheet, we present to you T. N. T. O'Kelly, the one-eyed little miner who is familiar to all of us. We of the staff sincerely hope that you will find some of your favorite scenes within this book. Innovations in this annual include the use of color on the division pages, more copy, the entirely revised arrangement of the sections, and the first fourcolor cover in the yearbook's history. We wish to express our sincere thanks to Mr. Kazin K. Kazin and the Fine Arts Studio for taking the outstanding faculty, class, honorary, and some of the club pictures. Also, we wish to thank Mr. Ralph Lowenstein and the Student Publications Division Photography Staff for making most of the other pictures in this book. To Guynes Printing Company, we wish to extend our appreciation for their assistance and co-operation. The staff cannot express to the faculty and the Student Body its gratitude for the understanding and help in compiling this record of the school year. Last, but not least, we, the staff, wish to thank our enthusiastic advisor, Mr. John Middagh, who has encouraged our endeavors to make this edition superior to any in the Flowsheet's history. May this Flowsheet be your guide in remembering the 1958-59 school year. Yours truly,

FLOWSHEET DEDICATION OF 1959 His services and contributions to Texas Western College began in 1927 when the college, then Texas College of Mines, was founded. During his thirty-two

years here, he has more than adequately

filled the positions of Assistant, Associate, and full-time Professor in the Science Department.

Born in Richwood, Ohio, he attended Richwood High School before entering Ohio State University, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry and physics. In 1921 he received his Master of Science Degree in chemistry and math, and in 1941 he obtained his Ph.D in chemistry and math from the University of Chicago. Since then he has had several articles published in scientific magazines.

He served as the assistant in the Department of Pharmaceutical

Chemistry at Ohio State Univer-

sity from 1912-13. He holds membership in Sigma Xi, Phi Lambda Upsilon, the American Chemical Society, Fellow American Association for the Advancement of Science, and he is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Social Fraternity.

Before entering the Education field, he was the chemist

for the National

Carbon Company in Cleveland in 1913, and then from 1913-14 he served as the Chief Chemist for the William Edwards Company also in Cleveland. He has enjoyed experimenting

with the effects of cer-

tain chemicals upon the soil and plants.

Our honoree married Grace Harris in Shreveport, Louisiana. They have a daughter,

Frances El-

len, who attended Texas Western College, and is now married and living in El Paso.

As most of you have concluded by now, the Flowsheet Staff dedicates its 1959 yearbook

to

Dr. William Walter Lake. Dr. Lake's contributions to Texas Western and to the scientific world have been great. Our college is indeed fortunate to have on its staff such an outstanding person.

MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRLS AUTUMN ...

A SEASON FOR BEAUTIES

Every fall, after Thanksgiving, the Flowsheet sponsors the Beauty Contest. This year a long array of beauties was reduced to a "lucky" 13. This girls parade before a panel of judges in sportswear, daytime clothes, and finally in formal evening wear. For the first time this year the judges chose the five girls who in their opinion were the "Top Most Beautiful Girls on the Campus".

You can see why the judges had such a hard time.

homecoming .. the "big" day

The announcement of the Homecoming

queen and her

court start the ball rolling for the festivities of the season. Once this is done the mood for the "big" day is set. As usual, all organixations work throughout the long, but fun路 filled week to complete their floats in time for the parade. Those endless nights of work to get everything 'Iust so - the finished product at six o'clock in the morning, al fill you with pride - even if you didn't win. And then the game and the coronation of the Homecoming court - girls honored by your football team to rule your Homecoming and further illuminate the campus with their pleasant personalities. The evening was chilly, but you faithfully crowded the stadium for the "big" game. 'rhe Miners were defeated, but the spirit of the day was not lost. Instead, you attended the Homecoming dance that night, which was climaxed by the presentation of Queen Ruthie Kaplan and her court. The fun of the season, its hectic rush to get floats decorated, ennouncement of the Homecoming nobility, and the general air of festivities that prevailed had reached its end. All was over until next year.

Hail Queen Ruthie!

The coronation of the 1958 Homecoming court was one of the few bright moments in an otherwise gloomy Nov. 1st.

Sweepdakes winner, the Judges' choice was this float by Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

the spirit of the college ...

The spirit a student feels for his college is a reflection of what the school means to him. Spirit is the culmination of a number of things-it is pride you exhibit when asked about your school; it is your support of TWC's Marching Cavalcade at parades; the send-offs the squad receives before out-of-town games; the bonfires and pep rallies held by excited students and varsity players; the thousands of rooters filling the stadium for the Border Conference games on Saturday nights. Spirit is also that loyal support of the team when the chips are down. Just a little spirit often raises a team from dejection to aspirations of victory. The cheerleaders are the representative spirit of Texas Western; the physicel symbol of whet you, the student, feel. The meny spirit organizations do their part by entering competing floats and br. encouraging the freshmen to take part and become boosters of their col ege and all its functions. Spirit is a big facet in a school's success or failure with its student body, You helped to meke TWC the spirited school thet it is-you ere the spirit of the Miners and the spirit behind Texas Western's Homecoming.

a tradition . . . Co-Ed

A scene of one of the strongest cempus traditions is the Co-Ed Ball, that one time of the year when it's baby who pays. Every year, during the second week in December, convention is mugly ignored as members of the feir sex get together and plot strategy-the gels ask for the date, provide transportation and a boutoniere, escort their date to a banquet and dance, and then take him to the other side of the stream for further refreshments. The affair is equally beneficial to the woman, as this is the time when she can step forth and grasp the handsome brute whom she has been worshipping from afar all semester. The annual Co-Ed Ball, sponsored by the Co-Ed Council which is composed of representatives from all social organizationl for women, storts the Christmas Holidays off on the right note. The girls finallyget a ehance to honor their favorite males by electing a court of a king, dukes and a jester. The coronation of these gents highlights this evening of entertainment. His majesty receives a bonus prize from his fiance.

The Co-Ed Council proudly surround their monarch, Kin9 TEX, alias BiDHuff.

December 9, 1958 Miss Linda Curton Feature Editor Flowsheet Texas Western College EI Paso, Texas Dear Miss Curton: I am in receipt of your candidates for your Flowsheet queen and five runners-up. It has been an extremely difficult thing for me to have to select winners out of so many lovely ladies, and if it were up to me, I would like to make each and every charming young lady a winner. However, as that is not possible, I have made my selections by marking the backs of the winning candidates. Best wishes to all.

SCIENCE BUILDING

The Science Building has can ta ined the Chemistry Depart. ment and the Department of Biological Sciences since its eenstruction in 1950. Its completion made it possible for tho! Chem· istry Department to surrender the building it had occupied since the founding of the College to Geology. Hoilldoy Holl. men's gymnasium, honors Robert L. Holliday, /1883.1954), member of the Board of Regents in 1927·1933. He had promoted the building program which furnished the College with this building and an expanded athletic field. His brother, Thomas C. Holliday, is remembered as one of our collllge's early coaches.

Kldd Field had its beginnings in a small stadium constructed in 1921 by Dean John W. Kidd (1880-1941) for the College ath. letic program. Until 1933 it went nameless. In that year it was expanded to present dimensions and named for "Cap" Kldd, "the father of football at Mines.•• who coached the first team and.•• built the original fiefd....-Shown on page 169. The Physics Building dominated the original campus in 1917. In those days it was the Main Building. It was renamed in 1951, following minor alterations to its present form. "Old Main" Is considered the example most faithful to the Buthanese motiff basic to Campus erchitecture.
