DEDICATION

HE

talks of history, and his students listen and learn.

HE

lectures, but he also listens. In his classes there are many questions always answered, and debates.

HE

brings alive Clio, the Muse of History.

HE

know a lot about the history of England, the nited States, the outhwest, the Biblical Lands, and many other places, but that isn't all. Ask him any question concerning baseball and see how much further his historical knowledge goes. He can also tell you Joe Schnorz' batting average for the year, OughtOne.

WE

speak of Dr. Rex Strickland, the teacher to whom we dedicate this 1961 Flowsheet, with thanks from the many students he has taught at Texas Western.

CAMPUS LIFE

FALL, 1960

FOUND THE

FRESHMEN

Don't look o happy, on, that' lunch.

what they're erving fo r

You think you' re tired now, wait till you get to the top.

This little hike is to get the freshmen accustomed to walking across campus.

Don't ju t stand there, the boy needs help.

PAI TING THE "M" IN THEIR BEA IES Each year, before school officially starts, the Freshmen climb the mountain to whitewash the "M".

O bviou ly these boys aren't cut out to be homemakers.

Weary Fr shmen descend after a hard day's work.

13

This registration mess is awful, especially for the first-semester freshmen.

REGISTRATIO \VORRIES BEGAN ALL OVER AGAIN All right Cecil, dig deep! Those fees must be paid by eptember 19th.

Y'all smile just as long as you can because this isn't any fun at all.

WITH CARDS QUESTIONS AND FEES.

A million lines of typewritten words and still the registration line stretches on and on.

Yup, it is disgusting to try to avoid the Army when they just sit there and smile.

Your freshman beanie certainly looks impressive, Truett, but so does Mrs. Duke's card file.

15

Lambda Chi Alpha's officers greet the rushees with warm handclasps and big smiles.

FRATERNITY RUSH PARTIES START SCHOOL WITH A BANG At the Kappa Sigma House some serious rushing was done with chapter president Jim Peticolas showing how.

Pretty Marcia Haney lent a feminine touch to the Phi Tau parties. "Have another cooky, boys, they're good!"

SORORITY RUSH IS GLAMOROUS A N D GAY

Pretty girls, all asmile, certainly make rush-week an exciting adventure.

No! They aren't proposing marriage; there just weren't enough chairs to go around.

Rush does have its serious side, too especially when a rushee is shown the lodge.

17

Our BIG Miners fought hard for every inch of ground that they gained, and they fought well for T.W.C.

FOOTBALL WAS BIGGER A D BETTER THAN EVER ...

Tho e wide eyes and awed expressions indicate that the "Knot-Hole Gang" is really impre sed. "WOW!!"

Say, are they looking for the football, or is there something happening that is more important than that?

These lovely ladies, in coordination with Mike Bishop, the new feature twirler with the Texas Western Marching Cavalcade, presented several colorful halftime shows.

SPECIALLY WITH THE

THE MAJORETTES,

.J NCOURAGEMENT AND

AND THE LOVELY GOLDDIGGERS

UPPORT OF THE BAND,

Mrs. Barbara Prewitt, Golddigger instructor, created the choreography for the Golddiggers.

The bright uniforms of the Texas Western College Marching Band stand out harply again t the stadium crowd.

Miss Bettie Anne Davis, talented feature majorette, strikes a formal pose. 19

The Phi Taus' " Prospector's Progress" won Sweepstakes and showed us the vast change in the size of T.W.C.

HOMECOMING: THE GAME, THE DANCE A D PARADE

Lambda Chi certainly called to attention the problems of cars and parking spaces. They won first in fraternities.

Tri-Delt led the sorority division with an appropriate float that impressed the boys er, ahem, that is, the judges.

20

- -=----=----~

Chi Omega's Little LuLu added an amusing note to the H omecoming gaiety.

BROUGHT EXES HOME TO T .W .C. FOR THE EVENT OF FALL, 1960

"Courting" in 1913 was fun, according to the Wesley Foundation group. Must be true! They all look happy.

The Z etas' clever float predicted the fashions for the 1970 Freshmen.

21

Dorm Council members gather gracefully for a hot for the annual.

AUTUMN, 1960, FOUND CLUBS MEETI

D POLITICAL S ... EVEN AT

BIG PARTIES .. .

Wal king to class can be a pleasurable pastime, if it's not from the gym to Burgess Hall.

Will it be Kennedy or ixon? This seems to be the problem at hand.

22

Whether weighing the world situation, or working math problems, the S.U.B. was a good place to gather.

EV ER BUSY THE S. U . B . WAS A P LACE T O MEET , SNACK

AND VISIT. Calorie-counters and slim people too, could be accommodated in the snack-bar in the S.U.B.

Some smiling Golddiggers have just finished eating, before they have to dash off to the Golddigger class at noon.

23

If anyone sees Jetta, ask her who Bobby Bracewell convinced her to vote for thi year.

NOVEMBER BROUGHT ELECTI O S, BOTH FOR T.W.C. AND THE U.S.A.

Voting is serious at any level, whether it is for S.A. president or for U.S.A. president.

Out student body selected many deserving young ladies to positions of honor as class favorites.

24

Sweetie, you don't have to depend on a stop-sign to attract contributors; those striped pants will!

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE, THE A P O' S COLLECTED MONEY FOR THEIR MILK FUND

"Juliu " and " itting Bull" are getting results from their collecting but was it for milk, or for clothes?

Danny, uh ______ did you forget something, or does that sheepish grin indicate friendliness?

25

The Varsity "A" Choir performed at many functions at the college.

FALL FOUND THE VARIOUS DEPARTMENTS FAST AT WORK

The newly initiated ballet program at Texa Wes tern fl urished from the start.

Drama was given new stature by the outstanding acting done by the students in that area.

26

DECEMBER BROUGHT BEAlTY CONTESTS, CO-ED, COLD WEATHER, AND MORE PARTIES, FOR US TO ENJOY

Charming Carolyn Shaver is showing why she was finalist in the T.W. C. Beauty Contest.

Beauties are even beautiful when they are caught off guard, huh, Brenda, dear?

Being beautiful can be serious business, but aren't iki and Pris overdoing it? Smile, gals, it i n't bad!

27

AWS held its annual hamburger fry for the nominees for the CO-ED Ball. Good food, too !

MID-SEMESTER EXAMS CAME AND WENT AND EVERYONE RESOLVED T O STUDY MORE, BUT .. . The new trophy-den room at the Lambda Chi House certainly had quite an initiation this winter; with all the cold winds, the relaxed atmosphere lent a cheering warmth.

After firm resolutions to really get down and study, we see people who look quite happy breaking them. 28

Jackie Schlafly cuts paper dolls in the interest of education which was a result of over-studying for semester exams.

IT NEVER HAPPENS THAT WAY.

Winfrey appears awfully worried. Could this be mid-semester?

This ogre represent our beloved instructors' status in the minds of our student body, after mid-semester examinations.

The Military Ball was one of the highlights of the Fall Semester. QU E MARILY is at her loveliest as she reigns over her Court.

THE GALA MILITARY BALL WAS AN EVENT ENJOYED BY ALL IN ATTENDANCE

The Q E looks happy as she receives her crown from Colonel Joseph H. Buys.

Good Old Federal Inspection, Thank Heavens It Only Happens Once A Year

R. 0. T. C. COMES TWICE WEEKLY, BUT FEDERAL INSPECTION ONLY O CE A YEAR hat will the R.O.T.C. Department do next year without their photographer John? hat will the Annual do without him?

Dr. Ray Past and Roger Hayne salute a traveler who didn't make it.

NEW GROUP ON CAMPUS THE "DESERT RATS"

The Desert Rats is an organization devoted to exploration, shooting, sleeping on the desert, and to the drinking of beer. It is composed of students, teachers, and the offspring of teachers. Most of their activities are confined to exploration of the Chihuaha-Sonora Desert. ome of their field trips are illustrated below.

Duane Godwin hacks at a rabbit (for the ste pot) while P rof. John Middagh grimaces and Charles H orky takes instruction .

Roger Haynes, Bill 1iddagh, Mr. Mid dagh and Duane Godwin fiddle with a campfire near Victoria tinaja, in Chihuahua.

Two Rat try to coax a fire into flame to fix breakfast.

32

Horky and hip Past take out time to study algebra instead of ballistics. (John Fitch was busy taking the e pictures.)

This group of motorcyle-jacketed men are not escapees from "The ~ ild Ones." They are, from left to right Gene Colley, Guy O' eal Ernie Fulford, Jackson Burkett, and Tracy Baker.

OUR "CAMPUS COPS" ENFORCE THE TRAFFIC LAWS AT T. W. C.

"Mmmmmm. I'll bet that smarts!'' Boy, being a policeman i no laughing matter.

He looks so happy that he must've just made an arre t. hame on you, Ernie, he didn't mean to!

The e lo el , graciou winner pose for an informal picture. They are iki Lettunich ara onnaly Carol Knapp, and echa St.. wart.

The ten ion mount until a peek at the judge become an important necessity.

In spite of the anxiety these ladies are f elirrg Kay and iki share a big smile with the photographer.

The Five Best-Dressed Eds seem to be guarding the four winners of the 1960 Beauty Contest

WITH THE BEST-DRESSED EDS ON HAND TO ESCORT THE WINNERS

One for you, and one for me, and one for you, and one for me, and ... oh, forget it! Jack and Al look patient, tho!

Petite Donna Tritt and Jerry Everett, one of the be t-dre sed eds seem 8mused at a joke told by the m.c.

King Pat di played his u ual charm and wit at being selected to reign over his lo al subjects.

Hi Majesty led his lovely date, Rebecca Roberts, in the first dance.

"WAITING FOR GODOT" WAS JUST ONE OF THE MANY FINE PRODUCTIONS OF THE DRAMA DEPARTMENT THIS YEAR

Has he ju t eaten a lemon, or are all of the cares of the world causing such a sad, miserable face?

The College Players were e pecially outstanding in their " odot" production.

Tired? Run-down after a hard day at the office? We have just the thing for you! 38

Hootie Ward and the A Council worked all year long on projects that made the organization's first year on campus an outstanding success.

MEETINGS KEPT US BUSY ALL YEAR LONG; PROJECTS, PARTIES, AND PRACTICES MADE ST DYi G DIFFICULT. e ley Foundation, and the other religiou organizations, met often to add the proper influence to every-day acti itie .

Among the finalists in the Mi s T C c nte t, held each spring, were Marilyn Geyer, Jan Breedlove, lenda Eldridge Anne Rutledge, and echa tewart. The judges had a difficult time.

ORS DAY ASSEMBLY.

arla Maffei , Flow heet editor, is shown presenting the annual' s dedication to Dr. Eugene Thomas on Honor's Day.

A stage tu_ll of di~nitanes spoke inspiringly to a large and attentive audience at Magoffin Auditorium.

Margaret illi , Linda Haughton, Ron Hanson, and P~t B wman are olemnly repeating the oaths of off1Ce for the tudent Association at the assembly.

42

IN NO TIME AT ALL, FINALS AND ALL-NIGHT CRAMMING SESSIONS WERE UPON US.

The above picture is typical of many just like it that took place during Dead Week and Finals. Our SUB and the library were worked overtime when the full realization that summer was around the corner and finals were here, hit us. Coffee and cigarettes had to sustain those of us that had neglected to study during the long semester.

43

AFTER FINALS WERE OVER, JOYOUS AND LOUD CELEBRATIONS . ..

Marshall and Jack think that Carla looks dead , or at least that's what the sign indicate . But after finals . who isn't?

This gay group decided to have a hip-wreck party, and it looks like either they really were mar oned on a desert i land, or else they are refu gees from La Tuna.

We can 't imagine what Troy is persuading Virginia to d , but Jet's not interrupt T om and his friend th ere in the foreg round!

44

WERE HELD TO RELIEVE THE TE N SIONS OF TESTS, GRADES , AND OVERALL W ORRY Frank and Pat came as suitcases, and it is just amazing how well they held up during the ship-wre~k.

Kit looks like she may be fix~ng to cut her date's throat. Could it be that she caught Jimmy making eyes at a pretty native girl? If she forgives him it'll be a close shave.

This peasant was hired to keep the place clean during the party; you kno'N", like sweeping away people who couldn't take the train of fun after exams.

45

Photography and swimming courses provided instruction and entertainment for the summer chool students.

SUMMER FUN IN THE SUN WAS RELAXING AFTER A YEAR OF WORK, BUT SUMMER SCHOOL WAS ATTE

DED BY A FEW OLD FAITHFULS

Twirling cla e were held on campu again thi year, and aspirant majorettes of all age enthu ia ti ally participated.

- ., -

-

The swimming courses were especially nice, because you could not ?nly acquire an even tan, but you could also lose weight by exercismg.

46

T WC' S ON-CAMPUS POO L P RO V IDED MANY HOURS OF RECREATIO N AFTE R CLA SSE S

Wild and furious water games like keepaway and water volley-ball and water-tag made the swimming pool second only in popularity to the snack-bar in the SUB.

Come on back, kids, All we want to do is take a picture.

Screams and shouts punctuated the hot afternoons, and kept the life-guards on their toes wondering if someone were dying, or if there were a game in progress.

47

Summer School' smiling Queen Sharon dances the first dance with her escort.

SUMMER CAME TO A SPECTACULAR E D WITH THE SUMMER SCHOOL DA CE

Talented Penny horow a lovely and gracious as any queen her elf, added a great deal of atmo phere to the dance.

Dancing takes a lot f c ncentration and practice to d it well, but Rocky and Ed are probab l going profe sional judging from the looks of things. 48

Vacation time is here at last!

WITH ANOTHER SCHOOL YEAR OVER, WE BID FAREWELL TO TEXAS WESTERN COLL GE AND THE CITY OF THE SUN.

SOME OF T HE HIGHLIGHTS OFTH

The Kangaroo Kourt, this year, was presided over by Mr. John Middagh, and was held for those students who didn't wear western clothes on Go-Western D ay.

This line-up of, uh. . .unique looking characters seemed to be enjoying the Western Day Dance.

A Castro Look-Alike Contest was held, and some of the results were startling. Witness the group on the

FLOWSHEET JUDGE

EL PASO , TEXAS

March 1, 1961

Miss Anne Wehmeyer and Miss Janet Duncan Co-feature Edit0rs of Flowsheet Texas Western College El Paso, Texas Dear Misses Wehmeyer and Duncan : Unknowingly, I, with my collaborators, assumed a terrific, though pleasant , responsibility in our efforts to select from all those lovely girls the "Flowsheet Queen of 1961" . I would suggest that in the future years in connection with this important matter, that you do one of two things; either cut own on the nwnbar of lovely contestants or reach back into time and reincarnate another Solomon . Be that as it may , we were all happy to be helpful and , as I said before , it was most d ff icult to make a decision . We have selected Entry No . 99 as winner with Nos . 3 , 115 , 79 and 23 being runne1•s-up .. neck and neck . Our very good w shes we send you .

7:eJ"~5 Wester~ (o/le5e OF THE UNIYERSITY OF TEXAS

Ojfu, flj tlu I'rmdr,,,

November 9, 1960

The Flowsheet for 1960 provides a record for each student who attended Texas Western College during the year. There is no substitute for this record. Each one of you spent this year as a par ticular year of his life, and it will always be remembered as such. Whether you are Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior, this year is so recorded. In the years to come, when you show this particular issue of Flowsheet to friends and relatives, you will say, "This is the Flowsheet of this special year that I attended Texas Western College." Down through the years, many memories will fade, but the Flowsheet will serve to revive them. I hope, also, that this Annual will serve to keep alive your interest in Texas Western College. Nowhere in the United States, am confident, is community and ex-student loyalty to a college a more vital thing than it is at our college. I know that we will continue to have your support, your understanding, and your loyalty. I am confident that you have had a happy collegiate year. I wish for you success and ccntinued happiness in the years to come . Sincerely yours,

MINERS GET REGIONAL, NATIONAL RECOGNITION IN 1960 Two T exas Western players were named to the AllBorder Conference first team and two more to the second unit in 1960. Both the team and these individuals were ranked among the top performers in categories of statistics released by the several National Collegiate Athletic Associations. John Furman, quarterback of El Paso and John Young, guard from Abilene, Texas, were both named to the all-conference first unit . Lawrence (Rock) Hutson, senior guard from Littlefield , and fullback Charles Bradshaw of Abilene were selected for positions on the second all-conference squad. These two players were team captains for the preceding year. Final NCAA statistics included the names of several TWC players. Among them was John Furman, the 10th-

ranked passer in the nation with 94 completions for 1094 yards; he was listed 14th nationally for total offense with 1275 yards. Fullback Willie Vasquez was considered the fourth-best punter in the United States with an average of 42.5 yards per punt. 46 receptions for 412 yards gave little Del Williams the 3rd spot among the nation's college pass receivers. Del also managed to get the seventh-best position in pass interceptions. Charles Bradshaw was ranked number 30 nationally in rushing, with 585 yards. In "team statistics" Texas Western Miners were noteworthy, according to NCAA statistics, both for their forward passing and their punting. TWC finished first in one category. The 1960 team was the least penalized team in the US, averaging only 18.6 yards per game for infractions.

THE PROSPECTO R 'S

"CASTRO LOOKALIKES"

Contestants take part in an old Cuban custom: plucking chickens.

After an extensive search The Prospector uncovered the existence of Castro's double (as far as the beard, cigar, fatigues, and chicken go) on the Texas Western campus. Bob Gribin, a freshman PE major, was selected as Castro's twin from a field of eight entries. For placing first Bob received a 14 cent Havana cigar. Jerry Young, who came in second, was the proud recipient of five small American cigars. Juan Fresquez, third place winner, received one unplucked chicken which he promptly exchanged for a cigar. Other participants in this all-American contest were Salvador Ramos, Herb Bell, Dave Short Jr., Lloyd Adams and Henry Morales. Mr. John J. Middagh, chairman of the Journalism Department; Charles Horky, editor of El Burro; and Carla Maffei, editor of The Flowsheet were the judges.

I am pleased to have been able to present to you, the students and faculty of Texas Western, this 1961 Flowsheet. It is my wish that the time and effort spent by the staff members preparing this annual has resulted in a book which will, in the future, renew many happy memories of college days. Iwouldlike to thank the following people, whose help and guidance made this book possible. To the staff for their many hours of work, to Mr. John Middagh for his guidance as our faculty sponsor, to Mr. Frank Goss for his encouragement and advice, and to Mr. Ralph Lowenstein and the Student Publications Division Photography Staff for their fine pictures. A
