Praise for Homeric Questions & Homeric Responses “[Homeric Questions is the] latest in [Nagy’s] series of brilliant and provocative works that open up new vistas in Homeric studies. . . . Informed and creative, wide-ranging and profound, this book reminds readers why its author is one of the foremost classical scholars in the world.” —CHOICE

“Nagy performs a valuable service, in the current climate of Homeric studies, simply by reminding us once again, and forcefully, that the relationship between our written texts of Greek epic and their oral origins is a problematic one.” —SOUTHERN HUMANITIES REVIEW

“More than any other classicist, Nagy tries to uncover and explain the brilliance that can come from an oral tradition. . . . This is an important contribution to the field of Homeric poetics, more narrowly, and to the study of Greek literature more broadly.” — C A R O L D O U G H E R T Y, Wellesley College

Homeric Questions

Homeric Responses

BY GREGORY NAGY

BY GREGORY NAGY

In this innovative investigation, Gregory Nagy applies the insights of comparative linguistics and anthropology to offer a new historical model for understanding how, when, where, and why the Iliad and the Odyssey were ultimately preserved as written text, handed down over two millennia.

In Homeric Responses, Nagy presents a series of essays that further elaborate his theories regarding the oral composition and evolution of the Homeric epics. Building on his previous work in Homeric Questions and Poetry as Performance: Homer and Beyond.

LAW & ORAT OR Y

The Oratory of Classical Greece This series presents all of the surviving speeches from the late fifth and fourth centuries BC in new translations prepared by classical scholars who are at the forefront of the discipline. These translations are especially designed for the needs and interests of today’s undergraduates, Greekless scholars in other disciplines, and the general public. Classical oratory is an invaluable resource for the study of ancient Greek life and culture. The speeches offer evidence on Greek moral views, social and economic conditions, political and social ideology, law and legal procedure, and other aspects of Athenian culture that have recently been attracting particular interest: women and family life, slavery, and religion, to name just a few.
