EMPLOYEES IN ACTION DUNN DENTAL - MAJOR WATER FLOOD

In January, the Dunn Dental facility experienced a major flood due to a mechanical unit coil eruption. Due to freezing temperatures the units were frozen. Once the unit began to thaw out, the coil busted and caused flooding of the 2nd floor and proceeded to the 1st floor. Our maintenance and custodial departments were immediately notified. Facilities teams work together to minimize the flooding and quickly began clean up efforts. Belfor, which is our disaster relief contractor was called and arrived and began assisting. Because of the quick response by our dedicated Facilities employees, 75% of the water had already been taken care of by the time Belfor arrived. Awesome job team!

SAFETY TIPS

Slips, Trips and Falls (STFs)

Have you ever walked by an area at work that could cause a slip, a trip or a fall and walked on by thinking that someone else will take care of it? Often people think of this situation as unimportant, and ignore it. A STF can affect everyone in the workplace and by not creating good housekeeping practices, you can hurt yourself or others within the workplace. Slips are the result of too little friction or a lack of traction between the footwear and the floor surface. A trip is the result of a foot striking or colliding with an object, which causes a loss in balance, and usually a fall. Studies show that 66% of falls occur on the same level as a result of slip or trip. There are costs for STFs to both the employer and employee. They can cost the employer in the area of loss of productivity, increased insurance, lost wages, out of pocket expenses, pain, temporary or permanent disability, depression, and even death. Wet and slippery surfaces account for many accidents and injuries along with wet or oily surfaces, occasional spills, weather hazards, and loose rugs/mats as they all contribute to slips. Obstacles in aisles and walkways are also major component of STFs and can cause a trip hazard. Common causes are obstructed view, poor lighting, clutter, uncovered cables, and uneven walking surfaces. You can prevent STF’s by enforcing housekeeping practices because it’s the first and most fundamentally important measure for safety. Cleaning all spills immediately, removing obstacles from walkways, keeping areas well lit, and securing mats, rugs and carpets that do not lay flat would prevent many STFs.
