Pharmacy
A life-changing career Today, the pharmacist is considered a critical part of the patient care team. With the continuing development of sophisticated new drugs and complex drug delivery systems, the role of the pharmacist continues to expand. Often, the pharmacist is the most accessible member of a patient’s health care team. The pharmacy profession offers a wide variety of career opportunities. Most graduates choose to work in a community pharmacy. However, an increasing number of opportunities are now available in hospitals, nursing homes, extended care facilities, health maintenance organizations, group practice, uniformed services and the pharmaceutical industry. Because of this, pharmacists now enjoy one of the highest employment rates of any profession.

You have options! The UTHSC College of Pharmacy (COP) offers the following programs of study:
PharmD – The Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) is a professional doctorate degree and is the prerequisite for the licensing needed to practice the profession of pharmacy. It is a full-time, four-year course of study. PharmD/PhD – The PharmD Program is combined with PhD programs based in the College of Pharmacy and the College of Graduate Health Sciences to train qualified pharmaceutical scientists for careers in academic and industrial positions. Students who are accepted into the program may choose to pursue a PharmD degree along with a PhD in either Health Outcomes and Policy Research or Pharmaceutical Sciences. PharmD/MBA – The University of Memphis joins with the UTHSC COP to offer a PharmD/MBA dual-degree program. Once the MBA program is completed, graduates are prepared for careers in management and leadership positions across the profession – from retail pharmacy ownership to institutional pharmacy management. PharmD/MHIIM – For select students, the PharmD program can be combined with the Masters in Health Informatics and Information Management (MHIIM) program based in the College of Health Professions. This degree prepares pharmacists to be a leader in health informatics and information management. Health Informatics Certificate – The goal of the Health Informatics and Information Management (HIIM) program is to prepare health care professionals to manage patient information in an increasingly complex electronic health record environment. Pharmacy students may earn a certificate in HIIM by completing nine hours of courses online while finishing their pharmacy program requirements. Nuclear Pharmacy Certificate – Nuclear pharmacy seeks to improve and promote health through the safe and effective use of radioactive drugs. Pharmacy students who want to learn to prepare radioactive materials that will be used to diagnose and treat specific diseases may earn their certificate in the Nuclear Pharmacist program. All UTHSC student pharmacists earn a certificate in Medication Therapy Management as a part of the PharmD Program. This enables our pharmacists to actively manage drug therapy for patients by identifying, preventing and resolving medication-related problems.

Because the College of Pharmacy places great emphasis on preparing students for rapidly changing health care trends and understanding pharmacy’s impact on the overall health care system, local and nationally recognized health care leaders are invited to share with students their insights on unique advanced practice models through guest lectures held on the UTHSC campus. 8 UTHSC
UTHSC Student Pharmacist Key parts of the P2 curriculum are the therapeutics courses that focus on the safe and effective use of medication. They enable our student pharmacists to design, implement and monitor pharmacotherapy plans for patients. Student pharmacists explore absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of medications in two pharmacokinetics courses. IPECS skills-based practicum and case discussions provide opportunities for student pharmacists to build confidence in patient assessment and to practice concepts learned in the classroom. Our student pharmacists learn to effectively search and analyze drug information in the Information, Technology and Safety course. Pharmacy Management and Economics provides an introduction to successful pharmacy practice management, while Personal Finance offers a practical foundation for future financial security.
Student pharmacists learn from patients in Applied Therapeutics in the spring semester. Elective courses present opportunities to focus on areas of interest during both P2 semesters.

Diverse Experiential Programs The UTHSC College of Pharmacy offers an amazing array of advanced practice experiences, more than most colleges or schools of pharmacy can provide.
The P3 fall semester prepares our student pharmacists for the experiential part of the curriculum. The last semester of the therapeutics series covers a broad range of topics, and students continue to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real patients in Applied Therapeutics. Student pharmacists learn how to interpret clinical literature in the Literature Evaluation and Study Design course. Pharmacy Law and Medication Therapy Management (MTM) courses prepare students for contemporary pharmacy practice. The IPECS series culminates with complex patient cases that build upon prior content. Students prepare for Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) through the Professional Development course. Finally, in the spring semester of the P3 year, our students start their Introductory and APPEs and participate in two concurrent, month-long therapeutic electives.

How to Apply The UTHSC COP participates in the centralized Pharmacy College Application Service (PharmCAS). The service collects official transcripts and PCAT score reports, along with the three required letters of recommendation and forwards them to each school to which the applicant applies. The UTHSC COP Admissions Committee strongly advises applicants take the PCAT in the Summer or Fall prior to the anticipated year of admission. This will allow an opportunity to retake the exam, if needed, before the close of the admission cycle. The UTHSC COP accepts applications from the PharmCAS cycle opening date, normally mid-July, through Feb. 1; however, applying during fall semester is strongly encouraged. UTHSC COP utilizes a rolling admissions process and offers acceptance starting in September of each year. Those who submit their application earlier will have priority in the selection process. Interview opportunities and positions in the incoming class will become limited or completely full as the admissions deadline approaches.
Admissions Options
There are three ways to apply to the UTHSC College of Pharmacy. Traditional Admission Most students are admitted through the Traditional Admission process by applying through PharmCAS by Feb. 1. The college reviews applications and invites the most competitive students for on-site interviews. These take place during the late fall and spring and are conducted in both Memphis and Knoxville. The college utilizes a rolling admissions process, which concludes by mid-April. All students admitted under this option begin the PharmD Program in the following fall semester. Early Decision Students are encouraged to apply for Early Decision through PharmCAS. This program allows students to apply to only one school. If a student is admitted during the Early Decision process, their application is closed, and they are committed to enroll in the program. Early Decision has an early September application submission deadline (as set by PharmCAS), and those students selected have an early interview, typically in late September. If a student applies during Early Decision but is not admitted, he or she may still be considered during the traditional admission cycle. Additionally, the application is opened by PharmCAS so that it may be submitted to other colleges of pharmacy. 12 UTHSC
Direct Admission Students have the opportunity to apply to the UTHSC College of Pharmacy at the beginning of their undergraduate college program. The purpose of the Direct Admission program is to offer strong students access to the UTHSC College of Pharmacy special events and programs, with a guarantee of admission once prerequisites are successfully completed and final admissions criteria met. Qualifying students must achieve a minimum high school cumulative GPA of 3.5 and a minimum composite score of 25 on the ACT or 1150 on the SAT. Students must meet program maintenance requirements as they complete their undergraduate coursework. Application to the Direct Admission program may be made before or during the freshman year, and the College of Pharmacy Office of Admissions will notify all applicants of their admission status on a rolling basis. Students are encouraged to apply by Jan. 1 of the spring semester as seats are limited. Admission to this program is made through a highly selective decision process.
Important Dates - Apply Early!
• July - PharmCAS application available; PCAT summer exam administered (see www.PCATweb.info for application and exam dates, times, and locations). • September - Interviews begin for Early Decision applicants. • Fall - Interviews begin for Traditional Admission applicants in October. PCAT offers exam in September, October, and November. • January - PCAT administered. • February 1 - Deadline for application through PharmCAS; visit www. pharmcas.org to apply; all application materials must be received by PharmCAS
For additional information on any of the above admissions options or links to online applications, please visit http://www.uthsc.edu/ pharmacy/future_students/admissionsoptions.php.
Once Admitted The UTHSC COP takes great pride in welcoming newly admitted students into the college. Once admitted, students can expect to: 1. Receive personal notification of acceptance within two business days of their interview, if not sooner. 2. Be asked to declare a campus preference for the P2, P3 and P4 years of the program. Once this step is completed, the college will send the applicant an official admissions offer letter. 3. Receive an email from the UTHSC admissions office containing a student ID number and UTHSC email address, along with the deposit payment request. 4. Begin to regularly access their UTHSC email, as well as the email address used in their PharmCAS application, as important messages from the university will be sent to these addresses. 5. Send all official transcripts to the UTHSC admissions office, and send immunization records to University Health Services by the specified summer deadlines. Students must also complete a criminal background check through the college’s contracted vendor. 6. Be invited to participate in Pharmacy Weekend, a student-led, two-day event in April held prior to the fall matriculation. This weekend begins with a welcome party and includes a formaldress evening event. Participants take part in intensive information sessions that describe what to expect in pharmacy school and life in Memphis. Apartment tours led by UTHSC COP students are also available. 7. Begin a life-changing education with the start of fall classes!
For more information about the application process, visit http://www.uthsc.edu/pharmacy/future_students/applicationprocess.php or email fUTurePharmacist@uthsc.edu Although a student may be given a conditional admission, no student will be enrolled who has not finished all required courses prior to enrollment.
