SHUNYA Press Release for Solar Decathlon Europe IIT Bombay | Rachana Sansad Academy of Architecture

Team Shunya is the first team from India to be selected for the Solar Decathlon. It is a collaboration of the premier technology and architecture institutes of India, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and Academy of Architecture. Being a multi-disciplinary unit consisting of more than 72 students and 6 faculty from 11 disciplines of engineering and architecture, the team represents a unique interdisciplinary group working together to represent India at the international stage. To maintain India’s tremendous growth rate, it is crucial to meet the exponentially increasing demand for urban housing and energy in a sustainable fashion. Through the project H0, the team is looking to build a sustainable zero-energy solarpowered house for the average Indian homeowner, the largest consumers of urban houses in the next two decades. This makes creating an affordable house one of the prime design targets of the team. The name of our house is H0 (read as H Naught). It is a 63 sq. metre and is meant for a quintessential Indian family of 6 people. The house uses passive solar technologies for natural ventilation, lighting and temperature control. H0 also has its own HVAC system controlled by a building energy management

system. Through the use of Vastu Shastra and traditional Indian handicrafts and furniture, the ancient Indian science of architecture, the house appeals to the sensibilities of the Indian homeowner. The house achieves sustainability through sustainable materials, bioclimatic strategies, reed bed water treatment system, simulation and home automation. Team Shunya has also designed an entire sustainable city keeping the house as a key module replicated multiple times. The concept can be applied to cities and townships developed along major transportation links and peri-urban areas of major cities. Team Shunya will also actively endeavour to increase awareness among the building industry and the general population about solar technology, responsible energy use and energy efficiency.

The name Shunya in Hindi means “zero”, one of the India’s greatest contributions to the world. A frugal lifestyle has always been a part of Indian tradition and heritage and our team aspires to create zero energy lifestyles on an individual and community level. The socioeconomic questions that we have chosen to answer include: Is it possible to design a sustainable house for the average working class Indian? If yes, what would it take to create a home that every Indian can relate to irrespective of their socio-economic backgrounds? On the cultural front, the question is: How can we design a house that transcends the cultural boundaries in a country as rich and diverse as India and appeal to the sensibilities of all, while still being perceived as a home, and not just a house by each group in its own way? Answering these questions, though difficult, is necessary for anyone attempting to build a house that would be truly sustainable in all senses of the word.

Team Vision To sustainably meet the exponentially growing demand for urban housing in India

Team Mission To bring about a change in the Indian building industry, by demonstrating the affordability of sustainable housing To formulate and document a design process, which could be replicated to create sustainable homes in a resource efficient way

India is a Developing country. The middle income population’s demand for urban houses is projected to increase from 22 million to 91 million in 2030. By 2030, 590 million people will live in cities alone, nearly twice the population of the United States today. To ensure India’s growth story continues, Team Shunya

has taken up the challenge of building and demonstrating a sustainable house for the urban middle class. Project H0 is a model concept intended to bring about a change in perception of the industry, academia and the general population towards sustainability.

the project

Team Shunya and H0 have defined a new holistic approach to sustainability. Sustainability is an umbrella concept under which the all other design parameters lie. It is our strong belief that a house is not sustainable unless it achieves a balance between each of the following factors: economic, environmental, technological, socio-cultural, design and human.

Economic

H0 is designed for people in the Indian middle class, and the team is working towards bringing the industrialized cost of the fully equipped version to within 60,000 euros.

the lowest cost. The house will have technical provisions promote responsible energy use, without the use of unnecessary technological elements.

Socio-cultural

H0 is designed to be part of a vibrant community where social interactions enrich lives and lead to energy savings through symbiotic relationships between members of the society. An urban ecosystem will be proposed to incorporate modern technology while honouring Indian traditions and the Indian socio-cultural context

Design

Through a bio-climatic design and use of biodegradable material, H0 is designed to minimize the adverse impact on the surroundings. An attempt will also be made to make the lifecycle impact of the house positive via a cradleto-cradle design approach.

H0 is designed keeping in mind the Indian traditional science of construction or Vastu. The house is deigned to be a modular structure that can be integrated seamlessly into a dense urban or semi-urban scenario. Simplicity and aesthetics are also given importance in all decisions related to the house and its sub-systems.

Environmental

H0 will employ cutting edge commercial technology along with innovative designs perfected in-house to ensure that the homeowner receives the highest convenience at

Human factors such as leisure, security and spirituality are just as important as energy efficiency.

the house

Ho stands for House Zero or House Shunya. Our house is a single-storey home (67sq. m floor space) designed for a working class family of up to six people. The house is conceptualised to be part of a community where socio-economic interdependencies and affiliations create a vibrant and sustainable lifestyle aligned with the aspirations and choices of the target group for which it is designed. The urban ecosystem will consist of a dense cluster of four storeyed buildings placed around multiple city centres, each of which is a transport node, ensuring easy and efficient transport to and from the main city. Such a city is called a polycentric city and this model of development is called transit-oriented development. Since scalability is an important design consideration for the team, Team Shunya is constructing the top floor of one such building. It is designed to be modular and may easily be replicated in various climatic and cultural contexts. The modular unit is designed for Mumbai conditions and the Indian context. For the competition, it will be optimized to be a high-performing prototype in Versailles conditions. The team is using a combination of passive solar technologies, natural lighting, insulated walls, double-glazed windows and intelligent control over HVAC appliances to reduce the energy load as far as possible. This would make it easier to adapt the building to Versailles conditions as well as the heterogeneous conditions in different parts of India. A verandah is provided which serves as a buffer space between the interior and exteriorand the exterior. Modular furniture is used to redefine spaces in the house as per theirusage and functions according to the time of the day, thus offering more function alityper unit area. The bedroom, kitchen, living room and the exterior revolve around a central space,

which forms the spiritual centre of the house. The house is a quintessentially Indian home, complete with a common dining room for the family to dine together and a spiritual space. The team has tried to achieve a synergy between architecture, design and engineering to make the house efficient and aesthetic, while respecting the cultural sensibilities of the home owner.

Status Team Shunya is the first team from India to be selected in the Solar Decathlon Europe. Since the time of the selection, steady progress has been made towards creating a functional unit from a highly multi-disciplinary group of students. What started out with just 7 people in a small classroom discussing the dream that was the Decathlon, we have undergone a long journey to reach where we are. Orientations, interviews, presentations, meetings, workshops and lectures all paved the path for the group of students to become a team, and the house to take form. Currently, we have finished the assembly and disassembly of the house as well as packing. The house has been packed off and the containers have left from campus. The inauguration of the house took place on 13th of March and Dr Anil Kakodkar, aprominent nuclear scientist, was the Chief Guest. Following the inauguration of the house, it was put up for display for close to 2 weeks. At this stage, various groups of students, faculty and professionals came to see the house. The house will leave India on 3rd May and will reach France in the 1st week of June. We will prepare for the final stages of the competition in the month of May. A team of more than 34 students and 5 faculty members will be travelling from India to France around 12th of June. The competition is scheduled to end on 19th July.
