It has been an enjoyable experience to meet and work with Flathead Valley businesses that are excited to work with unique personalities and accommodate dreams for the big day. On the mymontanawedding.com website, I found a “Bridal Timeline.” It is such a lifesaver! It has kept me on track and showed me some of the finer details I may have overlooked down the road. With 11 months to go, I am glad we have researched and booked our venue and discussed contributions with family. photo by Jeremy and Alicia Brown Photography

By this time next year, I will be a married woman. Ahead of me is the yearlong (if not lifelong) process of planning, primping, and preparing, and I could not be happier. As we ready this issue for print, I am, like many of my fellow brides, frantically juggling the plethora of duties that accompany wedding preparation, in addition to the responsibilities of everyday life. As I’m sure all brides come to realize, I’ve found that planning a wedding is not just about ticking things off my todo list; it’s a period of bonding for all those involved. My planning has been made easier by the help of my fiancé,

There are two vital things to have done and set aside in the very beginning: the wedding date and budget. Once the date and budget are set in stone, attention can be devoted to all other aspects of the wedding: the guest list, savethe-date’s, wedding website, photographer, etc. For lack of better words, it’s time to get to work! This process has been truly enriched

by the help and patience of my fiancé and our families -- especially my mom. She has been my personal superwoman ever since I brought my guy home. She has reined me in when it’s needed, yet she has continually encouraged me to make this the wedding of my dreams. I hope this issue of Northwest Montana Wedding and Events will help you plan your picture-perfect day, and that you are enjoying this process as much as I am. See you on the other side!

Once in a Lifetime Michael & Christine By Christine (bride) • Photos by Brian at B2 Photography

How did you and Michael meet? I took a road trip to the University of Idaho in Moscow to visit my best friend from college, Sanja, during her second year of law school. Michael was also in his second year of law school at U of I, and he and Sanja had become good friends. Sanja knew Michael and I were perfect for each other; rather than trying to “set us up,” however, she just made a simple introduction one evening while we were out with all her friends, and things went from there. Michael and I spent the entire night talking in a quiet corner of the bar while, all around us, his law school classmates loudly celebrated the end of finals. After I returned to Montana, we kept in touch by email and our friendship quickly grew; I started making regular trips to Moscow to visit. Soon, there was no doubt in my mind that he was the one.

“...there was no doubt in my mind that he was the one.” 4

Northwest Montana Wedding & Events 2013

How did Michael propose? The proposal was completely unexpected and I was caught totally off-guard. I had just pulled into the driveway after coming home from work, and he came out of the house to meet me at the car. I don’t think I had even shut the car door when he dropped to one knee and held up an open box with a sparkling diamond inside. He asked me to marry him, and of course I said, “Yes!” Then we hugged, and I think we both started crying. We just stood there in the driveway, holding each other, not speaking, and enjoying the moment.

Once in a Lifetime (cont’d)

“All of our closest friends lined the aisle, smiling - some crying - and silently supporting our upcoming union.”

What was your favorite part of your wedding day? My favorite moment was definitely walking down the aisle with my father and seeing Michael waiting for me at the end. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to have the most important people in your life gathered together to support you and celebrate with you. All of our closest friends and family members lined the aisle, smiling – some crying – and silently supporting our upcoming union. I will never forget the look of joy and anticipation on Michael’s face as I moved closer to him. My father gently kissed my cheek, and I joined hands with my soon-to-be husband

Once in a Lifetime (cont’d)

If you could change anything, what would it be? I spent nine months planning our wedding, devoting so much time to making sure that every single detail would be perfect. When the big day finally came, everything went better than I could have expected. The only thing I didn’t anticipate was how hard it would be for me to just relax, have fun, and truly enjoy my wedding day. If I could do it again, I would live in the moment, relax, and enjoy every second, instead of worrying about whether or not everything was going according to plan. The entire day passes by so quickly; be sure to savor every minute.

Are Vintage Rings a Thing of the Past? by Ashley Wells-Wood of Jensen Jewelers

When shopping for wedding rings, it is easy to come across many tidbits of well-intentioned advice: “Allow two to three months of browsing to find the perfect ring,” or, “Plan to spend three months’ salary on an engagement ring.” Much more difficult to find is advice that involves details on the latest ring trends. Some say classic is the only way. Although solitaire rings make a statement and have lasted through the ages (for obvious reasons), why rule out pavé settings, stacked rings, and vintageinspired looks? These alternative styles also boast a unique attractiveness that has garnered popularity. With grandma’s family heirloom back in style, vintage designs are worth

checking out, now more than ever. This trend is all about delicate, feminine details and can feature minute detailing in the galleries (front and back views) of the ring and embossing of the metal; it can also showcase filigree and subtle engraving. Even more appealing to some are the multiple diamond settings often found in these pieces. Today, many designers are creating vintage looks with a modern twist. Harout R, for example, is a top-level designer who has created detailed pieces exclusively for the Love Story line carried at Jensen Jewelers in Kalispell. Hollie Wells, manager at Jensen Jewelers, suggests that “when a ring is purchased, the jeweler should explain the diamonds and gold and their properties. This piece is precious, and deserves a thorough

don’t expect it to be perfect. Wells suggests visiting a jeweler to have the ring inspected for quality. With such an important treasure at stake, find a jeweler with whom to entrust this precious memento. Spend the money to have the ring repaired properly; such repairs can include thickening the shank or checking the filigree for durability.

understanding of protection, upkeep, and all that will make it last.” In the search for that perfect ring, vintage-inspired or not, explore all the options, invest in smart decision-making, and find a reputable jeweler to help make those decisions. Reputable jewelers will strive to understand the customer’s desires and lifestyle, and will be sensitive to the statement the customer would like the ring to make. “Sometimes we ask personal questions because we want the customers to be happy with their purchase and trust us to catch any troubles when the ring is brought in for inspection,” Wells explains. If blessed with a family heirloom,

Remember, lifestyle is an important consideration when choosing a ring, whether an heirloom or a newly purchased item. Someone who works with his or her hands, hunts, or is involved in other activities that could potentially damage a delicate ring should shy away from vintage bands. Such people need something more durable, unless they are willing to remove the ring every time they engage in those

activities. Look into channel settings, which provide more protection for the diamonds. Be aware that rough yard work and sports can scratch a costly metal investment. (Note: Platinum can be roughed up more easily than white or yellow gold.) However, a jeweler can easily fix small scratches during regular cleanings. If the ring is taken off during any rough activities, be careful! Don’t set it on a table where the cat loves to curl up or next to the kitchen sink. Scratches from working on the deck can give a ring character; scratches from the garbage disposal, however, are unfixable. Exercise proper care and caution in order to keep this valuable piece around for a granddaughter. Avoid wearing the

ring while working with concentrated chemicals (e.g., bleach, harsh cleaners, or chlorinated pool water). “And please, for your own sake,” Wells advises, “bring the ring in to a jeweler for inspections.” A hometown jeweler, versus an online site, offers these inspections at no charge. The inspections will ensure the jeweler gets to know the customer and ring well enough to prevent the loss of a precious stone. In grandmother’s day, the diamond ring was reserved for Sunday best. Only simple gold bands were worn every day, because the women of that day took pride in the ownership of these pieces, keeping the next generation in mind. Whether dealing with a precious family heirloom, a modern vintage piece, or a classically styled ring, take the proper steps to keep it in pristine condition for generations to come. The longer the heirloom is kept in the family, the more memories it will hold as it increases in symbolic beauty, inherent meaning, and sentimental value. www.mymontanawedding.com

Dress by Melissa Beumer

The only thing more nerve-racking than choosing a wedding gown is keeping it clean before the wedding. In addition to that, there’s the challenge of aftercare. With some precautions, the dress can be kept in pristine condition until the wedding and come down the aisle clean and wrinkle-free. Afterward, with proper cleaning and storage, it will be ready to sell or to keep for a daughter to wear. During dress fittings, make sure to be lotion-, deodorant-, and makeupfree. When wearing shoes in order to measure hem length, make sure they are not soiled in any way. After alterations have been completed, place the dress on a proper hanger (preferably padded), wrap a cotton sheet around it, and store it in a guest room or spacious closet. The dress does not need to be steamed or pressed until a day or two before the wedding. Bring the cotton sheet when picking up the gown; this will keep it clean and wrinkle-free as it is transported to the wedding site.

Wedding Day Emergency Kits by Melissa Beumer of Mimi’s Bridal Preparing an emergency kit, which contains items that the bride or other members of the bridal party might need on wedding day, is a must! With a few essentials on hand, a small mishap such as a fallen hem, broken strap, or bodice that doesn’t lie flat won’t seem like such a catastrophe. Don’t wait until the last minute to pack everything into a day bag. Prep a kit several days in advance by gathering some of these suggested items:

waiting until after the honeymoon to get the dress cleaned, as long as there has not been a red wine disaster! Before trusting just anyone to clean the wedding gown, be sure to research the company: know their reputation and policies. How long has the company been in business? How many gowns have they cleaned? Make sure to have a thorough understanding of any guarantees. Some companies offer a lifetime warranty with a refund; ask the cleaner to specify the amount of time in a “lifetime” and ask if a refund will be offered for the cost of the dress if it is damaged. Reject any warranty that does not allow the box to be unsealed; sealing does nothing beneficial for the fabric. Do not deal with a cleaner who insists that a disclaimer be signed, releasing him from responsibility for any damage to the gown during cleaning. As an added option, keep in mind that tuxedo formalwear companies have now begun cleaning and preserving gowns. This provides a way for these companies to better utilize their machines. Ask the bridal salon for preservation kits or for dry cleaners they would recommend.

Aspirin Allergy medicine Band-Aids Safety pins, needle, and thread Pen Super glue Scissors Baby powder Toothbrush Toothpaste Clear nail polish Nail file Hairspray Bobby pins Bottles of water Double-stick tape

(to include double-sided carpet tape). Formalwear companies prefer this tape when fixing a hem on a tuxedo or suit.

High-energy snacks

Don’t let the bride or her attendants pass out from lack of nourishment! Here are a few suggestions: trail mix, cheese, veggies, granola bars, oatmeal cookies, or soy nuts – and lots of WATER! Make a list for the day as well; this list will include items such as the gown, undergarments, headpiece, shoes, purse and jewelry. Be sure to have everything before leaving the house; this will provide ample opportunity to fully embrace and enjoy that special day.

Jake & Danica

By Danica (bride) • Photos by Heart to Lens Photography

How did you and Jake meet? Jake and I met in 2009 while attending the University of Montana and competing on the track and field team. He was a business major, and I was a health and human performance major. On a trip to Lolo Hot Springs with a group of mutual friends, we began swapping hunting stories. That is where it all began; his eyes locked on mine and never diverted the whole evening. Soon, we were not only teammates, but best friends and hunting partners.

How did Jake propose? Two years after we met, he popped the question at our favorite hunting spot, and we have been inseparable ever since.

“Our wedding was a true celebration...” 14 Northwest Montana Wedding & Events 2013

What was your favorite part of your wedding day? I couldn’t have asked for a better day to have a wedding. The weather worked in our favor, the venue was gorgeous, the beer was delicious, the food was amazing, and the cake… YUM! Our family members traveled all the way from Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and Georgia to share in our special day. Our wedding was a true celebration of the start of our new life together. The wedding day memory that sticks in my head is when my photographer told me after the ceremony what Jake had whispered as I walked down the aisle: “Oh, my God . . .”

If you could change anything, what would it be? In looking back on our wedding day, I am very grateful for my wonderful family, who helped me in every way possible. Having the venue reserved for three whole days was a lifesaver! It cut down the stress of decorating and organizing on the day of the wedding, and I was actually able to participate in the process; it was a lot of fun. I enjoyed the whole day so much, I wish I could go back and relive it all over. Now, Jake and I are

a happily married couple, sharing dreams for the future, planning hunting trips and trail rides, and just enjoying one another. I couldn’t have picked a better man with whom to spend the rest of my life.

One-Of-A-Kind Wedding Design By Vanessa Pleasants of Vintage Whites Wedding Rentals • Photos by Jeremy and Alicia Brown Photography

It is the desire of every bride or hostess to bring a hint of personal touch into her special event. The latest trend in this personalization effort involves the use of quality vintage items. Specialty stores and increasing numbers of conventional rental stores stock vintage and one-of-a-kind items to help planners, brides, and ambitious hostesses create an original look for their special event and provide the perfect pieces to put the look together. Today, we see weddings bursting with originality and style that are uniquely tied to individual taste. Many brides have moved away from tradition in search of something that genuinely reflects their own personality. The result is an event that is creative, exciting, and unpredictable. Wedding receptions can be decorated with so much more than the standard tables, chairs, and linens. The possibilities are limitless and range from elegant upholstered seating to chippy wooden chairs; rustic wire baskets to glass cloches; and rich, beautiful linens to shabby backdrops. Whether a bride likes modern chic, classic elegance, or vintage funk, there are so many ways to add a unique flair to the event. Add a curvy Victorian sofa to a geometric monotone theme for some interest. Include a vintage crystal chandelier in an elegant evening wedding for a romantic touch. Use an old vanity for a dessert buffet and fill the drawers with greenery 18 Northwest Montana Wedding & Events 2013

for a jaw-dropping display. Many pieces can also be used as props during wedding portraits. One of the best ways to keep wedding ideas organized is to start an online board of ideas, such as those available on Pinterest. Each time an inspiring idea is found online, it can be pinned to the wedding board. If others are helping to design the wedding, that board can be shared with them and they can get a visual sense for what the bride has in mind.

7 Things Every Bride and Groom Should Know by Kelly Kirksey Photography

I’ve converted dozens of weddings into photo memories, shooting everything from a Halloween-themed wedding in which the bride was an angel and the groom a corpse, to a wedding so traditional it would make even Cinderella jealous. Regardless of the wedding theme and atmosphere, there are definitely some things to know before embarking on the long journey of wedding planning. Having seen the good, the bad, and the ugly of weddings, here are some tips I like to share that will help plan a wedding day that meets the highest of expectations.

1

Have a Day-of Coordinator. I

strongly suggest hiring a professional, but if that won’t fit in the wedding budget, find someone who will be in charge of making sure the cake person knows where to put the cake, the DJ has a designated place to set up, and so forth. A bride doesn’t want to spend her day policing the area and making sure all these tasks are done. Outsource it to the professionals, and sit back and enjoy.

2

Schedule

Photographs!

As a photographer, I know firsthand just how important this is. On wedding day, more time is spent with the photographer than anyone else. When there are dozens of people having their pictures taken, often at multiple locations, it is unwise to wing it and hope to have enough time to do everything. It’s even

and I was no exception. Remember, it’s very possible that not everything will go as planned, and that’s ok. At the end of the day, it’s about becoming married and living happily ever after, right? One bride said it perfectly: “Don’t strive for perfection; just try to enjoy the day as much as possible!”

4

Remember for Whom This Day Was Planned. Brides (and

grooms), this is your one special day to shine. Don’t worry about another soul, and, without turning into a monster couple, make the day about you. If your dream is for the first look to be at the altar, then do just that; don’t worry about people waiting at the reception. Make the day count; let it be everything you ever hoped for and imagined. photo by Kelly Kirksey Photography It’s ok to just think about yourselves. worse when everyone is calling and asking what time pictures start or where Have a Schedule for the they need to be. sure the DJ who’s been hired will emcee the event. I was recently at a wedding in which nothing was planned, and the bride

and groom were constantly telling the DJ what they wanted to do next. Create a written schedule of everything, from the entrance to the dollar dance. There are too many receptions that fizzle because of a lack of planning. The best receptions are well thought out and perfectly timed. The reception should be a chance to cut loose from the stress of the day, so kick off those shoes and dance the night away.

6

Skip the Receiving Line.

Somewhere, a mother just threw this magazine across the room, but trust me here: I’ve seen very few receiving lines take less than an hour. They take even longer when there are a large number of guests. And, let’s be honest, how many people like standing in line waiting to hug their friend and his or her new spouse whom they’ve never met? It’s best to save everyone some time and spend more of the day taking pictures or dancing at the reception. Admittedly, it is

Selecting a Florist by Joyce Billmayer of Conrad Floral

Being engaged is a wonderful time, but it’s also a time that involves hard work! There will be many arrangements and decisions to make, and at times it may seem overwhelming; with the advantage of time and planning, however, that dream wedding can and will come true. One of the first things to do is pick a wedding date. The more time that is allowed for planning and preparation,

It is very important to find a florist who can help bring to fruition the visions and goals for that special day. The best advertising tends to be word-of-mouth, so ask for recommendations from friends, family, or wedding professionals with trusted opinions. Seek out someone whose creative flair elicits a positive response. It is best to start the interview process at least 6-9 months before the wedding date; the most sought-after

the better chance there will be to hire competent and desirable professionals. After picking a date, it will be time to start thinking about flowers! The element of surprise is what makes flowers unforgettable. Flowers are an essential part of the wedding celebration. This is a special chance to choose those flowers that are most adored or that have special meaning.

florists are usually booked early. When searching for a florist, be sure to have a floral budget prepared, but keep it flexible; it will be difficult to know how much the chosen flowers will cost until estimates are received. A predetermined number will give the florist a better idea of the options that can be offered when discussing flower selections. The next step should be to sit down with the potential florist and talk about those flower selections; this consultation will typically take two hours. Try to come with ideas in mind. Collect photos, books and magazine pictures that will give the florist a feel for the colors, style, and mood. the ordinary. Be sure to look through the portfolio to browse the florist’s style and to discuss her desires. The portfolio will provide a feel for the florist’s quality of work and could even inspire ideas for arrangements. Talk to the florist about even the minutest details of the wedding, like the color of the reception linens. The florist will want to know how the wedding is envisioned and, of course, be informed of all the practical details, like how many bridesmaids, corsages, etc. Be sure to let the florist know what areas of the event are most important. Does that dream wedding include a dramatic entrance down a flower-filled aisle, or an elaborate reception with candlelit centerpieces on every table? East Glacier Park Bryan & Lindsey Wedding Checklist:

• Beautiful bride? Check. • Dashing groom? Check. • Kilts? Check. • Bagpiper? Check. • Twenty lbs. of birdseed? Check. • Umbrellas? Check. • Wonderful friends and family with a whole lot of love and prayer? Check, check! It’s doubtful there has ever been an East Glacier Park wedding quite like this; Lindsey and Bryan went all out! Lindsey, from Saratoga, California, and Bryan, from Ormiston, East Lothian, United Kingdom (Scotland to most of us), decided to host their destination wedding at Lindsey’s family cabin in East Glacier Park. The ceremony was held on a nearby hilltop with views into Two Medicine Valley in Glacier National Park. The wedding couple had friends and family from as far away as California, New Zealand, and Scotland join them, along with their local East Glacier family and friends. It was an absolutely unforgettable wedding, with transportation for the

wedding party provided by a local outfitter and a couple of horses - a truly unique and wonderful occasion!

How did you and Bryan meet? I met Bryan in Portland, Oregon. He was playing professional soccer for the Portland Timbers and I was a Graduate Assistant Women’s Volleyball Coach for

the University of Portland studying for my Master of Business Administration (MBA). We had mutual friends and, upon meeting, immediately hit it off! We dated for only two months before his season ended. He went back to his home in New Zealand and invited me to come visit after I graduated three months later. I went for two weeks, just to visit, and stayed one and a half years! The rest is history!

amazing views at Ridge Winery, he dropped to a knee and asked me to marry him. I was incredibly shocked and ecstatic, and immediately said yes! When we arrived at my parents’ house after wine tasting - and the engagement - there were bottles of champagne, friends, family and an amazing roast dinner waiting for us to celebrate!

How did Bryan Propose? Bryan likes to surprise me, so needless to say I had NO idea of his plans. The day started with a drive to a great viewpoint, a hike, and then a stop for a picnic lunch (that he made all by himself) at the Mountain Winery overlooking the whole city. This was followed by wine tasting at Ridge Winery (our favorite winery). While walking around the property to scope out the www.mymontanawedding.com

What was your favorite part of your wedding Day? Oh, wow. Just one? That may be an impossible question! We definitely loved the joining of our two families, friends, and cultures while in such a beautiful private location. We had the most amazing week of our lives rafting, horseback riding, and dancing. We loved eating and drinking with family and friends from around the globe (from Scotland, New Zealand, and all over the US). And, in addition, we got to share our love for one another in the presence of all of them!

If you could change anything, what would it be? My first instinct is to reply, “Not a thing!!” However, on second thought, we’d make the wedding last even longer so we could spend more time with our family and friends and show them all that Glacier Park has to offer! 34 Northwest Montana Wedding & Events 2013

Music: The Soundtrack to Your Wedding Day By Brittany Holmquist of B & T Sound Productions

William Shakespeare wrote, “If music be the food of love, play on.” Most people recognize the impact music can have on us, adding to the atmosphere and even the emotion of an event. We have all experienced this in one way or another. Imagine watching a favorite movie without the soundtrack, a graduation without the profound notes from “Pomp and Circumstance” ringing out, or even rocking a baby to sleep without a lullaby. Music expresses something words cannot fully encompass. Although most of us agree on the importance of music, not all of us understand the importance of how it is delivered. With today’s technology, many people feel there is no need for a wedding disc jockey (DJ). They feel the music is something they can handle themselves by creating a playlist, with all their favorite songs, on a laptop or iPod and hitting “play”. Then they wonder why nobody dances. They may have selected great songs; they may have even taken requests

First, a good DJ will act as master of ceremonies for a wedding event, not only making announcements, but also moving the event schedule along to keep guests engaged. A DJ will also have a wide knowledge of music across all genres. It is easy to say, “Just play typical wedding music,” but this can mean very different things to different people; it is a DJ’s job to know what songs will work best for each individual client. The DJ will also be able to integrate personal requests into the event at the appropriate times. Finally, the most important and often overlooked skill of a great DJ is the ability to read the crowd. This is the main reason why that wonderful iPod photo by Carrie - B2 Photography playlist will most likely fail. A DJ will from their guests and added them to the typically have a playlist prepared for playlist. Still, the guests act as wallflowers each event with songs that are likely to or, worse yet, decide to head home early, be appropriate; however, the DJ will still leaving the reception deserted. be selecting each song, waiting to see how the crowd is responding minute by The reason for this unfortunate minute. scenario is that there are skills a good DJ possesses that cannot be easily duplicated. www.mymontanawedding.com

37

Music: The Soundtrack to Your Wedding Day (cont’d) The term “DJ” sometimes evokes an image of a loudmouth making demands from the crowd to “put their hands up”, becoming the center of attention, and stealing the show. This stereotype can often discourage a couple from hiring a DJ for their wedding. Although the belief in this stereotype is sometimes warranted, professional and reputable DJs will understand the level of class and sophistication that is required at this more formal type of event.

“Music cleanses the understanding; inspires it, and lifts it into a realm which it would not reach if it were left to itself.” ~Henry Ward Beecher Another advantage to hiring a professional is that high quality equipment equals high quality sound. Even if a crowd doesn’t understand the technical aspects of a professional audio system, they will definitely hear the difference between home stereo equipment and a professional system. important for music and dancing, but also for the volume and clarity of the ceremony, toasts, and speeches. In 2001, the National Bride Service stated that, during wedding planning, brides said their highest priority was their attire; next on the list of priorities was the reception site and caterer. Reception entertainment was among the lowest on this list. Within one week after their reception, however, 78% of brides said they would have made reception entertainment their highest priority. Keeping that in mind, music is definitely not an area to cut from the wedding budget. While envisioning that perfect day, don’t forget to include the soundtrack.

Here are some questions to ask when seeking a wedding DJ who will be professional and talented:

• Do you have a written contract? (A comprehensive contract will protect both the DJ and the client.) • What makes you different from your competitors?

• Can we meet the person who will be actually working my event before our wedding day?

• Will you work with my playlist AND my do-not-play list? (Sometimes a do-not-play list is more important than a playlist.)

• How current is your music collection?

• Will your equipment allow you to mix one song into another so that there are no breaks in between songs?

• What if something happens to you and you can’t make it to the wedding?

• Will you take breaks? If so, how many, and what happens during the breaks?

40 Northwest Montana Wedding & Events 2013

• What if we really want to hear songs that aren’t in your music collection? (Some DJs may charge a fee after a certain number of requests that they need to purchase.) • What if a guest requests a song you don’t have in your library? Will you be able to download it at the event? (With technology today, most DJs should be able to download requests on the spot with a wireless connection or even a hot spot on their phone if there is no wireless available.)

• How involved can we be in selecting music for our event?

• Will you take requests during the wedding? Is there a limit to how many requests we can make?

• Will you act as emcee and announce the cake cutting, first dance, toasts, etc? Can someone else act as emcee?

• Can you give us an example of how you will make announcements?

• How many weddings do you DJ each year? Will you have another event on the same day? Have you worked at our reception site before?

(It is especially important that the DJ has wedding experience specifically, since a wedding will require a higher level of sophistication than a bar or party.)

“It is especially important that the DJ has wedding experience...” • Do your prices include the sound system, speakers, wireless microphone for the toasts, etc? What about overtime, set-up, and tear-down?

• What do you do to motivate the crowd if nobody is dancing? Do you have a “bag of tricks” to use if the typical tactics don’t work? (Many DJs have a few “ice-breaker” dance songs they can play if needed.) • Will you advertise your services to our guests? • Will you be discreet? • What will you wear?

• What is your policy on alcohol or smoking during the wedding? (A professional DJ will not consume alcohol or take cigarette breaks during a wedding. If a DJ says he needs a few drinks to “loosen up” while working, find another DJ with higher standards of professionalism.)

Intermountain’s Summer Roundup Fundraiser: A Fun Event with Serious Purpose (This feature highlights the way in which many NMWEPI members’ services can apply to other special occasions - not just weddings .)

by Dave Creamer • Photos by Kelly Nelson Photography

Intermountain Children’s Home is a non-profit organization in Montana that is deeply involved in the emotional and physical welfare of needy children and their families. Although Intermountain is determined to provide assistance to these individuals, the unavoidable costs that occur can make it difficult to operate to the highest potential. To

The first Summer Roundup was held on a working ranch, and while it was fun for many people, it was just a touch too rustic; the amount of work it took to convert a working ranch into a place for a three-hour party was hardly worth it. And so, even though the inaugural Roundup

While Intermountain is profoundly thankful for these generous gifts, Dave Creamer says that kind of success only pays for a fraction of the cost of operating the business: “We operate the only emergency shelter in the area for young children, and it costs a lot of money to do that kind of work. Fortunately, our donors appreciate the work we do and are happy to come alongside us in our mission to change the outlook for children in the Flathead Valley.” The increasing success experienced at the Summer Roundup across the past four years shows a great deal of promise for the future of Intermountain’s fundraising efforts.
