We are welcome to all perspectives

The College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) is dedicated to preparing future generations of activist scholars and educators focused on driving social change. In the Race, Ethnicity, and Sexuality Studies (REGSS) department, students learn not just within the confines of classrooms, but by fostering community and actively participating in university activism. REGSS collaborates with students, faculty, staff and the broader community to foster a more just society, both within academia and society.

The College of Education and Human Development prepares students to be culturally efficacious educators who are knowledgeable, communitybased and professional.

We are research and field-based

Our departments are aligned with numerous research centers including the Academy for Teacher Excellence Research Center, Child and Adolescent Policy Research Institute and the Urban Education Institute. COEHD service centers and institutes include Sarabia Family Counseling Center, Women Studies Institute, San Antonio Writing Project and the Psychological Assessment and Consultation Center. Other strategic initiatives include the UTSA Dual Language Community Lab School Partnerships and the Dr. Manuel P. Berriozábal Pre-freshman Engineering Program.

UTSA students learn how to utilize a range of data to inform their practice to improve the academic success of their K-12 students.

We are creating tomorrow’s leaders

The college’s research programs and field-based experiences are producing job-ready graduates with experience in their chosen careers. Through innovative education and dedicated mentorship, we develop and empower transformative individuals to drive positive change and shape a brighter and stronger world. All programs of study include a focus on developing competencies for working effectively in multicultural and cross-national contexts. COEHD’s leadership in education, health, wellness, human development and policy studies will play a crucial role in unlocking human and community potential.

Student Success Center Offerings

The COEHD Student Success Center provides a comprehensive array of services to support students throughout their academic journey, including academic workshops, career-engaged learning opportunities, a common space for gatherings and meetings and avenues for leadership and campus involvement within and outside of the College of Education and Human Development.

Recognizing the financial challenges students face in acquiring materials for class, group projects and assignments, the Center also offers a range of resources at no cost. These include essential items such as building blocks, poster boards, construction paper, pocket folders and more, which students can utilize and retain for their academic needs.

Academic Support

The COEHD Student Success Center aims to ease the transition from university entrance to graduation and provide a safe space and hub for COEHD students. We hope COEHD students see the Student Success Center as an additional resource, where they can find leadership opportunities and learn more about themselves while finding a home within the college.

Collaborating with schools and community agencies enhances connections, advances society, fosters innovation and creates opportunities for students to thrive.

Race, GenderEthnicity, & Sexuality Studies

The REGSS department is home to three degree programs: African American Studies, Mexican American Studies and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. We remain committed to preparing our students to act as agents of social change in community, educational, academic, non-profit organization and public service fields. At REGSS, the staff and faculty remain devoted to helping our students work towards a more equal and just world. These areas provide opportunities for intellectual growth with an emphasis on diasporic, decolonial and intersectional approaches towards race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality studies in education.

Major in:

» African American Studies

» Mexican American Studies

» Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies

Born from student, community, and university activism, the REGSS department is committed to working with students, community, staff and faculty to strive towards equality and social justice within the university and society as a whole.

We honor what we know. This is the main tenet of our faculty and staff because many of us grew up in the same communities and family backgrounds similar to those of our students. Our life and work experiences often overlap with those who sit in our classrooms, which makes many students feel respected and at home in REGSS.

Established in 1993, Mexican American Studies continues the tradition of the Mexican American Civil Rights struggle by participating in the creation of a college-going culture for San Antonio and South Texas.
