COLLEGE OF AI, CYBER AND COMPUTING
The Vision
UTSA is an early adopter of cutting-edge disciplines, as demonstrated by the launch of its School of Data Science in 2018—one of only three such schools in the nation. To facilitate growth, UTSA built a new home for the School in downtown San Antonio—San Pedro I— creating a vibrant hub that crosses multiple colleges. Since 2023, the School has grown to more than 1,000 students and researchers and San Pedro I has become a space for national industry competitions and conferences, elevating the university’s reputation. As demand for a skilled workforce in these disciplines continues to rise, deliberate action is needed to maintain UTSA’s competitive edge. In spring 2024, a planning exercise was undertaken to assess student interests and workforce needs; and to recommend a new college that promotes student success, career readiness, partnering opportunities, transdisciplinary research and funding competitiveness in these emerging areas.
The Impact
Headquartered at the UTSA Downtown Campus in San Pedro I and the undercosntruction San Pedro II, the college will expand UTSA’s role as cornerstone of San Antonio’s tech ecosystem. Working in tandem with local and national partners, UTSA aims to create a vibrant hub in San Antonio for cutting-edge education and research.
The Need
Advances in computing, including highperformance computing (HPC) and cloud infrastructure, are critical to scaling AI algorithms and processing large datasets quickly. The intersection of AI, computing, cybersecurity, and data science fuels the development of autonomous systems (e.g., smart cities, IoT devices), which require robust security and datadriven decision-making.
The demand for expertise and multidisciplinary approaches in AI, cyber, computing and data science is growing exponentially.
