Now & Forever
At Commencement in December, we celebrated with our new graduates as they were recognized for earning their degrees. Now and forever, they are Roadrunners!
STUDENT NOTE
HI!
Coming from a small town in Texas and being an only child, the thought of attending a university hours away from home was frightening. I still remember the stress and anxiety I felt as I applied to college. Thankfully, I had supportive counselors in high school to guide me through the process. They were just as amazing as the advisors I’ve come to know here at UTSA. From the start, UTSA felt like home. Orientation had a big impact in my first-year experience. Not only did I meet friends while exploring the beautiful campus, but I was able to picture myself succeeding for the next few years in this environment. As the years have gone by, I’ve come to meet wonderful people through clubs and organizations such as the Bilingual Education Student Organization, For the Kids Dance Marathon, and the National Society of Leadership and Success. With such a diverse university filled with students who have the same goal as me—to succeed—I knew I had picked the right school. The students and staff at UTSA have been more than welcoming. You can feel that they genuinely care about helping you achieve your goals. As a current Peer Coach at the UTSA Libraries, I’ve been able to give back to this wonderful university by helping students with research, finding books, and much more. As a future educator, it feels great to be able to lend a helping hand to other students who are going through the same experience as I am.
“You can feel that they genuinely care about helping you achieve your goals.”
As a junior now, the most important advice I can give you is to never stop striving for your goals and NEVER be afraid to ask for help, especially here at UTSA. And always... Go ‘Runners!

Drum Major
Bobby De Leon San Antonio, TX Class of 2017 Music
Since 2011, UTSA Spirit of San Antonio marching band has grown to almost 300 students and has had the honor of representing the United States in Normandy, France, at the 70th anniversary World War II D-Day Memorial Parade. Meet their student leader Bobby De Leon, Head Drum Major for 2016-17.
As Drum Major, Bobby is in charge of leading and representing UTSA’s Spirit of San Antonio (SOSA) marching band. Besides getting to lead the half-time performances at the Alamodome for UTSA home football games, he’s had many opportunities to travel with the band. This year Bobby and his fellow SOSA members were able to spend part of their holiday break in Albuquerque, New Mexico supporting the Roadrunners in their first bowl game appearance. Bobby has a burning flame and passion for all types of
music. Aside from band, he is a fluent saxophonist and a national collegiate mariachi vocal finalist. One of the key reasons why he chose UTSA was because the campus was one of few in Texas that offered a mariachi program. "Being able to sing and represent UTSA nationally is a big accomplishment for me." Bobby's dedication and outstanding leadership motivates others, ensuring a bright future ahead for both him and his fellow musicians. "When I become an educator one day, I want to inspire like the UTSA faculty has inspired me."

"Performing with SOSA as a Drum Major is a real humbling experience."

Your Academic Support Network Your network includes advisors, mentors, tutors, counselors, and more. There's always someone you can turn to for help while you're at UTSA.

Academic Coaches
Counselors
Every student at UTSA is assigned a specific Academic Advisor, who you'll meet at Orientation. Throughout your time at UTSA, you'll meet with your Advisor to discuss information and get advice about degree programs, class schedules, university policies, and campus resources. The Tomás Rivera Center (TRC) offers a variety of free tutoring services including individual or group tutoring, Math Assistance Program, course prep and more. The Writing Center also provides tutors to help students with each step of the paper-writing process: from brainstorming, establishing a thesis, and achieving coherence to unity, documenting, and revising.
SI Leaders
Peer Mentors
The Tomás Rivera Center’s Academic Success Coaches provide individual study skills assistance by appointment. They help students improve time management, note-taking, test preparation, and more. Students can also take advantage of 1-hour study skills workshops that are offered each semester. There are several counselors on campus to help you every step of the way. UTSA One Stop counselors are a great resource for resolving many tasks related to enrolling and paying for your education. Our Career Center counselors can help you find a work-study or part-time job and career guideance as you prepare to graduate. Or, if you just need someone to help you process life experiences, our Counseling Services provides confidential sessions at no extra cost.
Professors
Supplemental Instruction (SI) provides weekly study sessions for UTSA students enrolled in historically difficult courses. These sessions are peer-guided by SI Leaders, students who have successfully completed the class. Students who regularly attend SI sessions tend to average one half to one full letter grade higher than classmates who do not participate. At UTSA, we have many peer mentoring programs where you’ll receive guidance from a trained and knowledgeable fellow Roadrunner. Most notably, students are assigned a peer mentor in their freshman year, a dedicated upper-classman who can help answer questions on topics such as balancing social life with academics, getting involved on campus, navigating campus resources, and more. They just may end up being a lifelong friend! Just like everyone else in your network, UTSA professors are dedicated to student success. Your instructors want to help you master their course material, so always come to class and take advantage of office hours, too. Getting to know your professors is important, even if you don’t need help now—they can be your allies throughout your college career and even after college.

TOP-TIER ACADEMICS
Q&A Growing up, Jose Muzquiz was always fascinated by technology—taking apart electronics and (hopefully!) putting them back together. By the time he was in high school, he was learning how to build computers and earning IT industry certifications. Participating in the Air Force’s CyberPatriot youth competition helped focus his academic goals: he wanted to get a degree in cyber security, and UTSA’s reputation for cyber security made it an easy choice. And he’s excelled. Last year he was named to the UTSA College of Business’ Distinguished Business Students, reserved for the top 1.5 percent of undergraduate business majors at UTSA.
What do you like about the cyber security program? The classes are fun and exciting, and very hands-on. The professors are industry experts who bring a lot of experience to the classroom. What they teach is what’s current in the field. They’ve been very helpful and encouraging to me.
What other opportunities have you taken advantage of at UTSA? I went to Spain with the College of Business last summer, and that was great to gain exposure to a different country and
how they approach information technology. I’ve also been a part of the Business Scholars Program, which is targeted to help first-generation students by providing workshops, mentoring and personalized support. More than anything else, the BSP has gotten me to where I am today.
Have you done an internship? Yes, because of UTSA’s partnership with Rackspace, I’m one of many UTSA students who interned there. I worked in enterprise network security and my internship mentor taught me a lot about business
14 UTSA.EDU/FUTUREROADRUNNER
account management and how to establish relationships with clients in different cultures.
What are your plans after graduation? I’d like to work in corporate. One of the great things about my degree is you not only learn the technical side but also the business side—how to work with customers, engineers, network administrators and managers. Companies are looking for technical people but they’re also looking for people who understand the business world and what the company’s needs are.
