RowdyZine Fall 2022

The UTSA community gathered to enjoy some music, dancing and fireworks as they lit the Monuments the night before fall classes began. This celebration, known as Midnight Light, is part of Roadrunner Days, an annual series of fun-filled campus events that kick off the fall semester.

HI!

Hey ‘Runners!

My name is Jasmin Paquet-Durand Ford. I’m a senior, and I have the honor of serving as the 2022-2023 UTSA Student Body President. I’m from Belize, Central America, but moved to San Antonio in 2019 to attend UTSA. Like many others, when growing up, I was uncertain about what career to pursue. My second semester at UTSA I took Freshman Composition II, where I focused on environmental topics. That was when I realized I had to pursue a career in environmental and social issues, topics that I had been passionate about my entire life. Shortly thereafter, I declared my major in economics, a decision I’ve celebrated ever since.

Here at UTSA, I’ve been presented with countless opportunities. Through these, I have designed an undergraduate experience that distinguishes me as an individual and a scholar. I’ve had the opportunity to participate in internships, fellowships, experiential learning classes, leadership training and so much more. By pursuing any number of the opportunities available at UTSA, both inside the classroom and out in the community, students create their own unique, distinguished university experience that will prepare them for an increasingly competitive job market.

My greatest piece of advice for any UTSA student is to get involved. Whether it’s through an on-campus job, student organization, collegiate sports team, or college program, these are fantastic ways to build your social network, discover opportunities and connect with resources. Beyond getting involved, I encourage each student to advocate for themselves. Ask questions, take advantage of resources and advocate for what you need. You alone have the power to create your own bold future.

Q& A

UTSA is an Adobe Creative Campus, a distinction that shows UTSA’s commitment to offering digital tools to students to nurture creative skills and enhance education. Sophia Bard is making the most of this free resource to students for her own professional development. Read on to get her story!

What skills have you been able to develop through Adobe Creative Suite?

By using Adobe Creative Suite, I’ve been able to develop my graphic design skills like form, line, texture and color. Besides that, it’s also helped me develop professionalism in my creativity.

What projects have you been able to do at UTSA through Adobe Creative Suite?

My experience with Adobe Creative Suite has helped me perform my job with UTSA’s Enrollment Marketing department as a Student Activity Assistant.

My workload usually includes editing promotional photography and video using tools provided by Adobe like Photoshop, InDesign and Premier Pro. These tools help me to improve the quality of and add value to the products I work with. They’ve helped me reach a new level of professionalism, make connections, and overall enhance my marketability in my chosen industry. What activities or organizations have you been involved with at UTSA?

The primary organization I’m a part of at UTSA is the Public Relations Student

Society of America. Basically, within this organization you get to meet people within the Public Relations field. Through this organization we actually take tours of PR agencies, we meet with professionals in that field. We’re able to make connections in the industry that’ll help us later when we graduate.

What advice would you give to new students considering UTSA?

For anyone considering applying to UTSA, I would say absolutely go for it. There are so many opportunities here, and there are so many friends just waiting for you to get here.

A LOOK INSIDE THE NAJIM CENTER

it ’s a thursday afternoon, and Biomedical Engineering student Doubrapade Azazi is on his way to the Pearl, a unique shopping center and tourist attraction in San Antonio. He’s been working with a group of other students to find ways to improve the Pearl’s waste management, and is on his way to present their solutions with the rest of his team to the Pearl’s board members.

As a sophomore, being a part of UTSA’s Najim Strategist Program has given him the unique opportunity to not only work on real-life business problems in a diverse, collaborative group, but to do so while earning a stipend, getting hands-on career experience and building his network and résumé. UTSA supports students by providing experiences outside of the classroom to help prepare them for their bold futures. The Najim Center is one of the newest ways Roadrunners have the opportunity to do that.

the najim center for innovation and career advancement is a program that fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, helps build connections and makes professional development accessible to undergraduate students. Read more to get the inside scoop on this exciting program. »

FEATURE ROWDY // FALL 2022 9

What is the Najim Strategist Program?

The Najim Strategist Program can be a four–, six–, or 8–week long experience, where all participating students are paid a stipend. The students form groups that are then connected with a company seeking help with a problem, and the Najim students work together to find a solution. At the end of the project, the students present their solutions to the business owners and Najim Center staff.

“The Najim project is an opportunity for students to be able to have realworld experience with different organizations, ranging from non-profits to small businesses. You’re able to collaborate with different students that may not be within your major, and you’re able to help solve an issue that that organization has.”

Tackling Waste Management at The Pearl

Board members of the Pearl entrusted Najim Strategist students to find ways to more effectively manage waste products at the Pearl in the hopes of creating a more sustainable community. The team came together and created incredible solutions that would not only increase sustainability, but do so in ways that promote visitor engagement, create a sense of community, and support the businesses within the Pearl.

The Najim Strategist Program has proven itself to be a standout experience that can benefit any UTSA student. The amazing experiential learning opportunities at UTSA offer Roadrunners engaging ways to build real-world skills and connections that will give them the tools they need to pursue their bold futures.

What kind of students can join?

Any student! Students can join the program at any year and with any major. There’s no GPA or other academic requirements, no work permits are needed and students of any status are welcome (that includes international students).

“[In my group], I worked with a finance major, cyber security major, there was a person who was going into the Army, so it was really cool to collaborate with a lot of different people from a lot of different fields.”

Rebranding and marketing a renamed burger chain

Changing the name of a thriving business can be an intimidating marketing endeavor. That’s why Robert Walker, owner of local restaurant chain, asked the Najim Center for help with rebranding his business, which had just recently been renamed from Papa’s Burgers to The Good News Burgers.

After weeks of planning and hard work, the students came up with several new and exciting ways to draw in customers.

Planning a Compelling Web Presence for Area Real Estate

Creating and maintaining an online presence is something many modern businesses struggle with. Area Real Estate is one such business who enlisted the help of Najim students in rebuilding their website and increasing their web presence. This Najim team did not disappoint, and were able to create a plan for Area Real Estate and also build impactful business connections.

What are the benefits of the Najim Strategist Program?

The biggest draw of the Najim Program is the professional development. Students learn how to work towards real-world business solutions as well as how to do so in a team. Through their team and the business owners they work with, there is also the potential for lasting professional connections. Not to mention the students are compensated for their work with a stipend within the range of $900 - $1200.

“My major [Statistics] is very broad and it can be used in basically any field. Wherever I work, I know that I may have to expand my knowledge, so it’s good to see [what it’s like] to learn something new and incorporate what I know into that field.”

Work-Study Student

Beverly Quintana is a Finance major who is gathering professional experience as a work-study student on campus. She is also taking advantage of opportunities at UTSA, such as applying to and being accepted as a UTIMCO Scholar where she plans to further her professional development and gain career experience. Read on to learn more about Beverly’s journey!

Beverly Quintana was born and raised in San Antonio, and her appreciation of the city led her to UTSA. The location, sense of community and status as a Hispanicserving Institution were main factors in Beverly’s decision to attend UTSA. Beverly found her own communities as a firstgeneration and Honors College student.

As a Roadrunner, Beverly has made the most of her opportunities. She found employment with the UTSA Finance department as part of the work-study program. Work-study is a form of federal financial aid that allows students to work part-time on campus, earning money towards their school fees. This form

of financial aid also gives Beverly the benefit of gaining work experience while having a flexible schedule. “I get to build skills for my résumé, and engage with professors that I wouldn’t have engaged with otherwise.” She’s also built connections with important members of her major’s department, including the Finance department chair, Dr. Karan Bhanot.

Beverly’s professional development extends beyond her workstudy position. She’s been accepted into the UTIMCO Scholars Program, a mentoring program that helps first-generation students and Pell Grant recipients who are interested in investment and

asset management careers. The students hear from CEOs and other representatives from successful corporations to help them build meaningful business connections and learn more about the industry.

“I get to build skills for my résumé, and engage with professors that I wouldn’t have engaged with otherwise.”

Beverly is well on her way to becoming a successful member of the business world thanks to the tools and opportunities provided by UTSA.
