STUDENT NOTE

HI!

Hey ’Runners! I’m Jessica Tenorio, a senior here at UTSA studying Political Science. When I first visited the main campus, I parked in the Ximenes Avenue Garage ready to meet my new advisor. As I started walking down the stairs, I realized I didn’t have any money for parking. I looked over to the guy walking next to me and asked if the students were friendly. He said, “Yes, it's central Texas so they’re generally nice.” I told him, “It's my first time here at UTSA, and I just parked. I have no money, so I’m thinking about asking random people for a dollar.” He smiled at me, pulled out his wallet, and gave me five dollars. He said, “Here you’ll need this. Welcome to UTSA.” His kindness gave me the reassurance that UTSA was exactly where I needed to be. Throughout my time at UTSA, I have taken advantage of the countless opportunities the school has to offer. I am a UTSA Honors College member, McNair Scholar, IES Pathways Fellow, and PURF fellow. These organizations helped me realize that my dreams are attainable as a future academic. I never thought I would be an undergraduate researcher with dreams of a Ph.D., but UTSA had different plans for me. The experiences are unforgettable and so are the friends made along the way.

You are your own advocate in higher education, so learn to use your voice.

TOP-TIER ACADEMICS

Q&A Michael Segovia is a Public Health major at UTSA who was recently involved in the Virtual Research Experience for Undergraduates (vREU) program. He presented his research on the correlation between social networks and diabetes distress in young adults at the Great Minds in STEM (GMiS) Conference. Check out Michael’s experience with research, and how it’s affected his future. What drew you to your research topic? As someone who is Hispanic, I’ve seen the struggles and complications that diabetes has on my family and the community. My grandmother has diabetes, and my family always has to worry about [her]. This constant worrying and anxiety can really debilitate the mental health of…the Hispanic community, especially since diabetes disproportionately affects the Hispanic community.

Did you encounter any challenges during your research? When creating a research question,

6 FUTURE.UTSA.EDU

you have to make sure that it’s innovative and hasn’t been researched before. My first research question was definitely not the research question I put on the poster. Just the constant cycle of making a question, revising, editing, deleting.

What impact did presenting at the GMiS Conference have for you? The impact was pretty large for me, mainly because I was able to see how diverse and huge the STEM community is. Also, it enabled me to see a future in research and gave me the self-confidence to make it an actual career goal instead of just a dream.

What’s your plan after graduation? After graduation, I plan to obtain my master’s in public health. I’m not sure which graduate program to do since research is so new to me, but I am researching programs right now. I also plan on obtaining my PhD in sociology.

“It enabled me to see a future in research and gave me the self-confidence to make it an actual career goal instead of just a dream.”

Michael Segovia San Antonio, TX Class of 2023 Public Health

Out-of-Classroom Experiences at UTSA

UTSA encourages students to gain experiences out of the classroom during their studies. This gives Roadrunners the chance to develop the skills necessary to succeed after college. Here are some of the top out-of-classroom experiences Roadrunners have been a part of.

Conferences

Research

Students at UTSA have several opportunities to attend conferences that relate to their field or encourage skill development. UTSA also hosts a wide variety of conferences, such as the LeaderU Conference.

At UTSA, you could be at the forefront of research in your field as soon as you join Roadrunner nation as an undergrad! There are a wide variety of research opportunies— during the academic year and over the summer— with McNair Scholars, Research Initiative for Science Enhancement (RISE), and more.

Internships San Antonio is home to everything from startup ventures to Fortune 500 companies like Valero Energy, and UTSA students have completed internships at countless organizations! As a Roadrunner, you could be a part of these opportunities.

Study Abroad Service UTSA is highly connected to the San Antonio community! We keep that sense of community through student service projects. From programs like Citymester, to organizations like VOICES, there are plenty of opportunities to serve at UTSA.

For more details on experiential learning, visit future.utsa.edu/experiential-learning.

Have you ever imagined studying overseas? UTSA offers a lot of study abroad opportunities, including locations like Italy, Peru, Taiwan, and more! UTSA also offers scholarships for these programs, so no student has a financial barrier.

Bold Promise

Higher education is an investment and UTSA is invested in offering high-quality, affordable education to Texas students from low- and middle-income families. Through the UTSA Bold Promise tuition-free program, students like Jeremiah Presley, a business management major whose career goal one day is to open his own business, can focus on his education and student experience without financial worry.

The cost of attending college was a very large concern for Jeremiah and his family, who had been struggling financially over the past few years. “If it wasn’t for Bold Promise, I wouldn’t be able to go to college,” he says. Jeremiah was also a CAP student bound for UT Austin. However, it took no time for him to fall in love with UTSA. With Bold Promise and the unique atmosphere of the main campus, Jeremiah decided to stay a Roadrunner. He also stated that the diverse body of students and staff are another part of what made the school stand out to him. After graduation, Jeremiah would like to start his own business. He plans to open venue halls

“If it wasn’t for Bold Promise, I wouldn’t be able to go to college.” across San Antonio. He’s drawn to this business because he loves the idea of meeting new people and networking. Jeremiah is also part of the fraternity Kappa Sigma, which he saw as a good way to make new friends and future business connections. Since joining, he’s met many fraternity brothers and alumni, making more connections, and finding more opportunities through UTSA than he’d hoped for. Jeremiah wants future students to know that UTSA is great school. Speaking to his own

experience, he found unique value in the relationships and experiences he’s had as a Roadrunner and thinks that all students can benefit from those opportunities. The Bold Promise program covers 100% tuition and mandatory fees through scholarships and grants over four years for eligible students. Students must be a recent Texas high school graduate ranked in the top 25% of their class, have a family income threshold of $70,000, submit a fall freshman admission application and all documents, and submit a FAFSA to UTSA by January 15.

“Don't assume you’re not eligible for financial aid! There are lots of funding options out there—like scholarships, work study, and student loans. Every little bit of financial aid can help lighten the burden of paying for your college experience.” Anthony Surratt

Know Your Deadlines. “Most financial aid options have strict deadlines [see the timeline on Page 19] so it’s crucial to keep track of them. Stay on top of deadlines by making notes in your planner, adding important dates to a Google Calendar, or setting phone reminders for application deadlines!” Kari Doring

“Even if you haven’t decided on a school yet, include all of the colleges you are considering attending on your FAFSA application. [Remember: UTSA’s FAFSA code is 010115!] You’ll want to make sure you’re considered for financial aid no matter which school you choose. It’s better to be safe than sorry!” Guillermo Mora

Patience is a Virtue. “Once you’ve submitted your applications, take a deep breath and then celebrate! The hard part is over. Now, you just need to wait 10–14 days for confirmation that your FAFSA was received. If you don’t hear anything after 2 weeks, you’ll want to follow up!” Kassandra Gomez
