Tonight's program

Concerto No.1 in C Minor (allegro):

Vladimir Peskin (b. 1935-1988) was a renowned Russian composer who was known for his innovative techniques that contributed to contemporary classical music. Composed in the late 20th century, Peskin’s Trumpet Concerto No. 1 is a technically demanding and vibrant work that pushes the boundaries of the trumpet's abilities and potential. Not only is Peskin’s trumpet concerto No.1 a significant addition to trumpet repertoire, but also a steppingstone in the evolving role of trumpet playing in contemporary music. The first movement opens with a lively and assertive theme introduced by the trumpet, immediately establishing the character of the piece. The accompaniment provides a rich harmonic backdrop, allowing the trumpet to soar with agility and brilliance. The movement features contrasting lyrical passages and virtuosic sections, demonstrating the player's range and technical prowess. Vladimir Peskin’s Trumpet Concerto No. 1 is a testament to the richness of the trumpet's voice and a celebration of the instrument's capabilities within the orchestral setting. It invites both performer and listener to engage in a vibrant musical dialogue that resonates with energy and emotional depth. Peskin’s Trumpet Concerto No. 1 is dedicated to Timothy Dokshizer (who Peskin accompanied on piano).i

Semaine Sante A Cuzco:

Henri Tomasi’s (1901-1971) works has captivated artists and listeners over the past century. Tomasi was a very diverse composer and conductor, his talents led him to write operas, theatrical work, ballets, and of course solo works for wind instruments.ii Semaine Sante a Cuzco translates to “Holy Week in Cuzco”. This work was originally written for solo Trumpet and organ but has been adapted for Trumpet and piano. Tomasi is offen recognized more for his Concerto in C for Trumpet and Orchestra, although they are two very different works they share the same level of vurtosity and finnese that it must take to express his wonderful and elegantly crafted ideas.

Fantasie and Variations on the Carnival of Venice:

Jean-Baptiste Arban (1825–1889) was a celebrated French cornet player, teacher, and composer known for his contributions to brass pedagogy and performance. His work laid the foundation for modern brass playing, and his Method for the Cornet remains a staple in brass education. Arban's compositions are renowned for their technical demands and lyrical beauty, making them essential repertoire for brass musicians. One of Arban’s most renowned pieces The Carnival of Venice, is a theme and variations based on a traditional Venetian song that displays variations of the theme in technical ways.iii The piece begins with a lively and catchy theme that illustrates the festive atmosphere of Venice with its vibrant culture and rich musical heritage. The melody is characterized by its playful spirit and rhythmic drive, immediately engaging the listener. Following the theme are variations that feature articulation, lyrical phrasing, technical flourishes, and a dazzling finale that leaves a lasting impression on the audience. Arban’s Carnival of Venice is not only a showcase for technical brilliance but also a work that embodies the spirit of celebration. It reflects Arban's ability to combine virtuosic demands with melodic charm, making it a beloved piece in the trumpet repertoire. The variations also allow performers to express their individuality and interpretative choices, making each performance unique.

Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major:

Arguably one of the most important works ever written for the trumpet must go to composer Franz Joesph Haydn and his Concerto in E-flat major. This is a multi-movement work that premiered not only a new era of composing for brass instruments but also premiered one of the most influential members of the brass family. During its premier on March 28th , 1800 listeners were stunned as Anton Weidinger walked on stage with the keyed trumpet. The keyed trumpet was a bugle that had tone holes covered with an assortment of keys like modern woodwind instruments.iv This not only allowed Weidinger to play chromatic passages, but also allowed the trumpet to play in a wide range of harmonic series. Since then, we have seen the evolution of this with rotary and piston valved horns. To this day orchestras perform this as a standard of their repertoire and even in pop culture it has been referenced many times. Such as in the show “Squid Game” you can hear the Allegro or third movement be performed in the background of the show.v It is also customary practice for such major works as this to have a performer compose their own cadenza to highlight their own talents. At the end of the first movement, you will hear a short originally composed cadenza by Christopher Barrera.

Song Without Words:

Joel Collier (b.1989) is a contemporary composer and musician known for his innovative approaches to melody and harmony. With a background in both classical and modern music, Collier’s works often reflect a deep understanding of emotional expression and instrumental color. His compositions span various genres, emphasizing lyrical qualities and intricate textures. Collier’s A Song Without Words is a captivating piece that exemplifies Collier's ability to convey profound emotions through music without relying on lyrics. Some key characteristics include Lyrical Melodies, Harmonic Richness, and Dynamic contrasts.vi This work captures the essence of the song form while allowing the listener to interpret its meaning through melody and mood. Through its lyrical lines and rich harmonies, the work offers a captivating exploration of the human experience, reminding us of the profound power of music to articulate feelings that words often cannot.

Misty:

Taken from her hit album “By Popular Demand: Ella Fitzgerald” Misty is a commonly performed jazz standard that hits all the marks when it comes to the blues and jazz. Ella Fitzgerald was regarded as “the most popular female jazz singer” for more than half a century. During her career she won over 13 Grammy awards and sold over 40 million albums.vii Her vocal flexibility and range gave any song she was on a special flare to it that no one has ever been able to achieve or replicate Tonight's rendition is a transcription of her vocal performance from her previously mentioned album. The jazz standard was composed or written a few years before her album. Composer Erroll Garner first wrote the standard in 1954 while on a flight from San Francisco to Chicago as he was inspired by a rainbow and thoughts of his wife.viii

O Sole Mio:

O Sole Mio takes us to the late 1800s as composer Eduardo di Capua encapsulates the heart of Italian and Neapolitan culture. The song's lyrics speak about the joys of waking up in the Italian countryside, and what its like to celebrate a new day after an intense storm. Originally written as a celebration or folk song, artists such as Luciano Pavarotti won a Grammy award, and Elvis Presley sold millions of albums when he used the melody for his song “It's Now or Never” ix Tonight's rendition of O Sole Mio features both soloists Christopher Barrera and Gustavo Medrano, and the nationally recognized Los Correcaminos trumpet ensemble. This Arrangement written by Chris Barrera takes inspiration from arranger Brian Sadler and his arrangement for concert band.

Thank you to everyone involved in tonight's performance, both Gustavo and Christopher hope you enjoy the virtuosic sounds of the trumpet repertoire and enjoy a night of fun and emotional music. We would also like to thank our collaborators Dr. Jeoung-Eun Lee, Mari Ito-Klausmeyer, the Los Correcaminos trumpet ensemble, as well as our panel members who are attending tonight. They are Professor Jeffrey Castle, Professor Gary Poffenbarger, and Dr. Oswaldo Zapata Correa.
