SigmaAlphaIota(SAI)isaninternationalmusicfraternityforwomen,andtheUniversityof TexasatSanAntonioishometotheThetaGammachapter.ThemissionofSigmaAlphaIota InternationalMusicFraternityistoencourage,nurture,andsupporttheartofmusic.
SigmaAlphaIotaisanorganizationthatpromotesinteractionamongthosewhosharea commitmenttomusic.MembersofSAIareactiveinallareasofmusicandcampuslife,working closelywithfaculty,administration,andcampusgroups!Alumnaemembersareteachers, performers,professionals,andpatronsoflocalandnationalartsorganizations.SigmaAlphaIota haslongbeenrecognizedasaleaderinthefieldofmusic.
Withover120,000initiatedmembers,SigmaAlphaIotahasmorethan335collegiateand alumnaechaptersallovertheUnitedStates.Collegiatechaptersmaybeestablishedonlyin schoolsofmusic,conservatories,ormusicdepartmentsofcollegesanduniversitieswith accreditedmusiccurricula.Alumnaechaptersmaybeformedbypost-collegemembersingood standingandPatronessmemberswhohavetakenthefraternitytraining.
Inthebeginning,SigmaAlphaIotawascalledasorority In1926theword“fraternity”replaced “sorority.”“Fraternity,”whichcomesfromtheabstractfeminineLatinnoun fraternitas, refersto bothmenandwomen.Ithasbeenusedbyallthemusicfraternitiesformanyyears.

JohnDuke(1899-1984)wasanimportantfigureinAmericanartsong,knownforhisthoughtfultext settingsandlyricalcompositions.Composedin1942,“LittleElegy”setsElinorWylie’spoem,which contemplateslossandthefleetingnatureoflife Thesong’sunderstatedyetexpressivequalitiesreflect Duke’ssensitivitytothetext Thevocallineflowsgracefully,supportedbyasubtlepianoaccompaniment thatenhancesthesong’sreflectivemoodwithoutoverpoweringthevoice.Duke’scarefuluseofharmoniesand repetitioncreatesaquiet,contemplativeatmosphere. “Little Elegy” demonstratesDuke’sabilitytomerge poetryandmusicinawaythatisbothemotionallyimpactfulandmusicallyrefined.

AdolphusHailstork’sFluteSetforSoloFluteisadynamicfour-movementworkshowcasingthe instrument'sversatility.Inthefirstmovement,ofthethreeperformedtoday,“WithVigor,”Hailstork exploresenergeticrhythmicpatternsandboldarticulations,creatingavibrantandrhythmicopening.The secondmovement,“WithFlexibility,”contraststhefirstwithflowing,lyricallines,emphasizingthe flute’sabilitytosingwithexpressivephrasing.Thethirdmovement,“WithBounce,”bringsthesettoa livelyclose,utilizingplayfulrhythmsandlightstaccato,highlightingtheagilityandbrightnessofthe flute Together,thesemovementsdemonstrateHailstork’smasteryofwritingforthesoloflute,blending technicaldemandswithmusicalexpression.

ThreePiecesinCrystalwaswrittenforaduowheretheflutistwasalsoageologist Eachofthe movementswrittenwasmeanttorepresentthecomposer’sinterpretationofwhateachcrystalsounded liketohim Themovementbeingperformedtoday,Citrine,isbasedoffofayelloworgold-colored crystal.Itswarmhuesaresaidtobeagiftfromthesun.Citrineisalsoassociatedwiththepitofthe stomach,orthesolarplexus,wherethesoulallegedlyresides.

MiklosRozsa(1907-1995)waspartoftheseeminglynumberlessstreamofEuropeanmusiciansresettling intheUnitedStatesduringthe1930sand40s,alsooneofthenumberlesscomposerswithserioustraining whowrotemoviemusictomakealiving HewonthreeAcademyAwardsandwasnominatedsixteen timesforBestOriginalScore. Rozsasaidinaradiointerviewthathehadgrownuphearing unaccompaniedfolkmusicinHungaryandthatthisexperiencehadsomethingtodowithhisproduction ofseveralunaccompaniedsolosforinstruments Fortheclarinet,hecomposedtheSonatinain1957and theSonatain1986,bothunaccompanied. OnewouldhavetopresumethattheSonatinaisforclarinetin B-flat,butnoindicationisgiven TheSonatinaisintwomovements Thefirstisathemewithseven variations Thesecondisascherzo-likemovementthatgetsfasterandfaster Theworkistonalandthere arenospecialeffects,extremesofrange,orimpossibletonguing,buttherearenotesgalore.

OverTheRainbowwaswrittenin1939byHaroldArlenforthefilmTheWizardofOz.Arlenwrotefor manyfilmscores,butOverTheRainbowbecamehismostwell-knownandawardedpiece LyricistE Y HarburgworkedcloselywithArleninthecompositionoftheentiremoviescoreandwouldgivehima titleforinspiration,thenoncethepiecewascomposedHarburgwouldsetwordstoit OverTheRainbow waswrittenforJudyGarlandplayingthecharacterofDorothyGaleandbecameGarland’smost well-knownsong.Theintroductoryverseincludedinthisperformancewasomittedinthefilmbutis includedinthescoreandisapartofothernotableperformances
