Philosophy
UniversityofTorontoSchoolsrecognizesthatextracurricularathleticspromotes sportsmanship,teambuilding,goodcitizenship,highacademicstandards,and communityresponsibility Extracurricularathleticsprovideanopportunityfor studentstoexploretheiruniquetalentsoutsideoftheclassroomsetting.These activitiesdemandahighlevelofcommitment,excellence,andselfmotivation, whichwillhelppreparestudentsforthechallengestheywillmeetoutsidethe schoolcommunity.
Itisaprivilegeforstudentstoparticipateinextracurricularathletics Participation isvoluntaryandisnotarequirement,noranentitlement.Therefore,extratime, effortandresponsibilityarerequiredofthosewhoparticipate.Sincethereputation oftheschoolisoftenjudgedbyitsextra-curricularprograms,highstandardsmust bemaintained.ThosewhoearntheprivilegeofrepresentingUTSinathleticsare expectedtoacceptgreaterresponsibilitiesasschoolcitizens
Participationinextracurricularathleticsisopentoallstudentsprovidedtheymeet thegeneralrequirementsasoutlinedinthishandbook,andanyrequirements specifictotheactivityoftheirchoice.

Seasons of Play

Theseasonsofplayhavebeenestablishedtoprotectthestudentathletefrom beingplacedinapositionofhavingsportsseasonsoverlap.Itisnotdesirablefora studentathletetohavetoattendpracticesandgamesformorethanonesporton thesamedays.Therefore,foundationstudentsmayonlyparticipateinonesport perseason.Forexample,anF1studentcannotparticipateinGirlsSoccerand Track&FieldastheybothtakeplaceduringtheSpringseason
Beginninginthe2022 2023schoolyear,studentsinM3 S6mayapplyforan exemptiontothisrule.Studentsinterestedinplayingintwosportsduringthesame seasonwillcompleteanapplicationoutliningtheirclasses,co-curricular involvementatUTSandanyextracurricularactivitiesdoneoutsideofschool The applicationwillbereviewedbyDr.Dawe,Mr.Kollins,thestudent’sguidance counsellorandMr.Knox.Ifitisdeterminedthatthestudentcansuccessfully competeintwosportswithoutbeingoverwhelmedbyacademicandother responsibilities,theapplicationwillbeapproved.Inthecasewheretheexemption hasbeengranted,thestudentwillneedtodeclarewhichsportistheirfirstchoice, shouldtherebeaconflictatOFSAA Undernocircumstanceswillastudent competeintwodifferentsportsonthesameday.
Inthecaseofanyseasonoverlap,forexampleVarsityBoysVolleyballleadinginto VarsityBoysBasketball,theprecedingactivityhaspriorityforpracticetimesand games Theupcomingsportmayholdpractices;however,thesepracticesarenot toincludeplayersoftheprecedingsport.Coachesintheupcomingsportareto makesurethosestudentshaveafairandequalopportunitytotry-outoncetheir sporthasconcluded.
Uniforms and E uipment
AlluniformswillbeprovidedbyUTSandwillbedistributedbythecoachforeach sport/team.Alluniformsaretobecoldwaterwashedandhangdried.
Studentswillberesponsibleforthecareandmaintenanceofuniformswhilethey areintheirpossession Intheeventauniformislostthestudentwillberesponsible forreplacingitatcost.
TheteamuniformandanyissuedathleticequipmentisUTSSchoolpropertyand mustbereturnedwithinoneweekofthecompletionoftheteam’sseason.Ifthe

uniformand/orequipmentisnotreturned,thestudentwillbeineligibletoplaythe nextsportseasonuntilthetheyarereturnedand/ora$250paymentisreceivedby theFinanceDepartment.Studentswillnotbeeligibletojoinorparticipateinother clubs/cocurricularactivitiesuntilthematterisresolved
Transportation
Thetransportationforexhibition,league,invitational,regional,and/orprovincial eventsmaybehandledintwofashionsatthediscretionofthecoach.The preferredmethodoftransportationischarterbuses
CharterBus
TheAthleticDirectorisresponsibleforthebookingofalltransportation Coaches aretoensurethatgametimesareaccuratesothatteamscanarriveattheir competitioninatimelymanner.
Onthebus,student-athletesaretobehaveasiftheywereatschoolasperthe UTSCodeofConduct,asitisanextensionofthebuilding!Instructionsofthebus driveraretobefollowedatalltimesandthebusistobecleanedofanygarbage beforetheconclusionofthetrip.
PublicTransportation
Ifthedestinationiswithin60minutesofUTSbypublictransit,publictransitmay betaken.Seniorstudents 18 maymaketheirownarrangementsforlocaltravel, withthepermissionofthesupervisor,asindicatedbythestudent,noshorterthan 48hoursbeforetheevent.FoundationstudentsmusttravelwithaUTSSupervisor.
ParentVehicle
Playersmaytransportthemselvestoevents.Familymembersmaytransportother immediatefamilymemberstoevents

Practice and Game Times
AllfacilityusageshallbebookedthroughtheAthleticDirector.
Exhibition/leaguegamesandhometournamentshavebookingpriorityover practices.Whenhomegamestakeplace,theentiregymwillbeused.
Anysportcurrentlyinseasonwilltakepriorityoveranyupcomingsport.(i.eboys volleyballoverboysbasketball)
Theremustbeastaffsupervisorpresentatallpracticesandgames
Coachesmayrequestspecificpracticetimes.Whilealleffortswillbemadeto accommodaterequests,itshallbethepriorityoftheAthleticDirectortoprovidea practiceschedulewhichisequitabletoallteamsinaccordancewithpriorities. Foundationteamswillpracticeaminimumofonceaweek,M3/4teamswill practiceamaximumoftwiceaweekandS5/6teamswillpracticeaminimumof twiceaweek.
TheAthleticDirectorwillcreateapracticescheduleonamonthlybasis.Insome instanceswhereseasonsoverlapitmaybeappropriatetodevelopascheduleona weeklybasis.
Coachesareencouragedtoprovideplayersandparentswithindividualcopiesof theseschedulesastheyareavailable,andtheAthleticDirectorwillpostschedules inGoogleCalendar Thiswillbethemostuptodateversionoftheschedule
Guidelines for Student Athletes Conduct
Student-athletesarerepresentativesandambassadorsofUTS,theschool communityanditsalumni
Student-athletesareexpectedtoprovidestrongexamplesofleadershipand citizenshipbothonandoffthecourt/fieldofplay,andbothinandoutofthe classroom.Whetherornotstudent-athletesareonthebus,atpractice,orattheir competition,theyaretofollowtheUTSCodeofConduct
Mostsportsareteamgamesandalthoughitisproperandevennecessarytohave personalobjectives,itisparamountthateachmemberoftheBluesteam possessesanunselfishattitudewhereteamobjectivesarethepriority.

Regardlessofwhenorwhereanathleticeventoccurs,itisaschoolsponsored activity.Theuseoftobacco,drugs,oralcoholisstrictlyprohibitedandshallbe enforcedtothefullextentpossible.
Eligibility
Anathletemaybeeligibleforcompetitionfornomorethanfiveconsecutive calendaryearsfromthedateofentryintoGrade9
M3andM4studentscancompeteintheJuniorVarsitycategoryprovidedthey werebornin2007or2008.
S5andS6studentscancompeteintheVarsitycategoryprovidedtheywereborn in2003orlater.M3andM4studentsarealsoeligibletocompeteinVarsity.
Aplayermustcompeteinatleastoneregularlyscheduledgamebeforetheyare eligibletocompeteintheplayoffofthatdivision.Ifanathleteisdeclaredeligible forplaypriortothelastregularseasonscheduledgame,theywillbeeligiblefor postseasonplayeveniftheremaininggame(s)intheirschool'sremaining scheduledgame(s)arecancelledorforfeited.Allplay-offgames,includinggames held"to"settletiesinfinalstandings,shallnotbeconsideredscheduledgames.
Aplayermaynottakepartinmorethantwogamesinahigherdivisionandretain his/herlowerdivisionstanding DuringtheregularscheduleaJuniormayqualifyfor ahigherdivisionbuthe/shemaycompeteinonlyonedivisionoftheAssociation playoffs,notboth.Insportswhichhaveasplitseason:
a)BoysSoccer–aplayerwhoplaysJuniorinthefallseasonmayplayamaximum oftwogamesfortheSeniorTeaminthespringseason HeisnoteligibleforSenior playoffs.
b)BoysVolleyball AJunioragedplayermayplayamaximumoftwogamesatthe SeniorLevel(fallseason).HisnamemustappearontheseniorteamEligibilityForm with“JR”indicatedbesidehisname Heisnoteligiblefor SeniorPlayoffs.Ifhedoesplayinatleastoneplayoffgamehewillautomaticallybe deemedaseniorplayerandwillbeineligibletoplayanyJuniorgamesinthespring season.
Studentsmustbeinattendanceforthedayofapracticeorgameinorderto participateinthatpracticeorgame Legitimatereasonsforanabsence,which wouldallowastudenttoparticipateonthesamedayastheabsence,are:
● Schoolsanctionedactivities
● Appointmentswithhealthprofessionals
● Emergencysituations
● Plannedabsenceforpersonaloreducationalpurposesthathavebeen approvedbytheschooladministration.

Studentswhoareabsentfromclassesforaportionofthedayduetoillnessare noteligibletoparticipatebysimplymakingittotheremainingportionoftheir classes Itwouldbeunethicalforacoachtopracticeorplayanathletewhowasill earlierintheday.Theeffectsofthatillnessmaylingerandpresentapotential healthrisktotheathlete,theirteammates,andtheiropponentsiftheathlete practicesorplaysthatsameday.
Anathleteundersuspensionfromschoolisalsosuspendedfromparticipationin extracurricularactivities,untilsuchtimeasthestudenthasbeenreinstatedto school.
Injuries
Allstudentathletesshouldcarrysomeformofmedicalinsurance.Ifanathleteis injuredwhileparticipatingonbehalfofUTS,theschoolwillnotcovermedicalcosts (e.g.Ambulancecosts).
Whenastudent-athletehassustainedaninjurythatrequiresremovalfromplayor interfereswiththeirabilitytoparticipate,theymustcompleteaReturnToAthletic ParticipationForm.TheformmustbereturnedtotheAthleticDirectorbeforethe practiceorcompetitioncanresume.
Ifastudent-athleteissuspectedofaconcussion,theymustwithdrawfrom practice/fromplayimmediately.Theywillberequiredtosubmitacompleted MedicalClearanceformorequivalentmedicalnotetotheAthleticDirectorbefore theycanresumefullparticipationontheteam.Thisincludesbothpracticesand games.TheUTSReturntoLearn/ReturntoPlayConcussionFormwillbegivento thestudent-athletebythecoachand/orUTSAthleticTherapist
Commitment
Beingamemberofanyschoolteamisaprivilege,whicheachathletemustearn.A keytoearningthatprivilegeiscommitmenttotheteam.Teamsuccesscanonlybe achievedifallparticipantsarecommitted.Thistypeofcommitmentincludes:
● Attendanceatallpractices,gamesandteamevents.
● Providingthecoachwithadvancenoticeofabsencesfrompracticesor games,andanexplanationofthatabsence.
● Thefollowingareconsideredexcusedabsencesfromapracticeorgame: medicalemergencies,familyemergencies,religiousobservances,academic reasons(afterallotheravenuesofextrahelpetc.havebeenexhausted).

Anystudent-athletewishingtodropoutofasportshouldnotifytheheadcoachas soonaspossibleandimmediatelyhandinallissuedathleticequipmenttothehead coach.
Hazing
HazingornegativeinitiationactivitiesareprohibitedbyUTS Theplanning, initiationof,orparticipationinsuchactivitiesshallbedealtwithunderthe behaviouralexpectationofBluesAthletics,andmayleadtosuspensionorremoval fromateamandorschool.
Guidelines for Coaches
ThefollowingguidelinesaretobeconsideredacodeofconductforUTScoaching staff.
Thecoachisfirstandforemostateacher.Thechiefobjectivesofschoolathletics aretobuildleadersandtodevelopathleticskills.Winninggamesissecondaryto theseobjectives Coachesareencouragedtomakeapositivecontributiontothe totaleducationalprocessinordertomeettheirobligations.
Thecoachshouldalwaysberegularandpromptinmeetingassignments–practices,gamesandmeetings.
Thecoachshouldbediligentinattentiontoroutinedetails.Thisincludesgettingin allreportswhendue,keepingnecessaryrecords,reportingresults,andforwarding anyreceiptswhenrequired.
Thecoachshouldinstilintheteamanattitudeofsportsmanshiponandoffthe court,duringthegameandafterwards,inschoolandout.
Thecoachshoulduseacceptablelanguageatalltimes.Vulgarityandprofanity havenoplaceontheathleticfieldorcourt,inthegymorintheclassroom.
Thecoachshallnotusealcoholornon-prescriptiondrugsinanyformwhilewith theteam.
Thecoachshould,whenfacedwithunpredicteddisciplinarysituations,letthe commonlawprevail.Situationsaretobeassessedonarationalbasis.
Thecoachshouldaccepttheresponsibilityasacounsellortotheathletesunder theirdirection.Thecoachisinauniquepositionamongallteachingstaffinthe relationshipwiththestudents.Manystudentscompletetheirhighschoolprogram

becauseof,inlargepart,oftheirinterestinathleticparticipationandtheinfluence oftheircoaches.Inthisway,thecoachcanplayamajorroleintheproblemsnow confrontinghighschoolsindrop-outratesandrelatedissues.
Thecoachshouldbemindfuloftheirpositionofguardianshipentrustedbythe athletesandtheirparents.Whileactingasacounsellortotheathletes,theremust alsobeanecessarysocialseparation,sothatover-familiarityorimproprietydoes notoccurorisnotperceivedtohaveoccurred.
Thecoachshouldworktoinstilwiththeirplayersrespectfortheofficials,and establishthattheyaloneshalldiscussaspectsofthegamewiththeofficials.
Thecoachwillrespecttherightsandfeelingsofothercoachesandwillneveruse tacticsthattakeunfairadvantageofothers Thecoachshouldbefriendlyand courteousatalltimesandneverarguewithanopposingcoachinfrontoftheteam orspectators.
Thecoachshouldteachtheteamtoberespectfulofandfriendlytowards opponents
TeamSelection
AllactivitiesareopentoallstudentsofUTSwhomeettherequirementsofgrade andgeneraleligibility.
Coachesmustconductanopentryout,andmaynotmakefinalcutsuntilafterthe secondpractice.
Finalselectionsshouldbebasedonattitude,coachability,andskill
Oncetheteamhasbeenselected,thecoachmustpromptlysubmitarostertothe AthleticDirector.
Practices
AllpracticeswillbescheduledbytheAthleticDirector.
Coachesshoulddistributeapracticescheduletoplayersandparents.
Coachesshoulddotheirutmosttoadheretothepracticeandgameschedule,and anychangesshouldgothroughtheAthleticDirector.
Achange,addition,orcancellationtoagameorpracticeshouldbemadewithas muchadvancenoticeaspossible.Suchchangesmayaffectplayerandparent commitmentsandmayhaveaneffectonotherteams.

PlayingTime/Expectations
UTSparticipatesincompetitiveleagues Assuch,therewillbefew,ifanyinstances whereplayingtimeforeachplayerontheteamwillbeequal.Theamountof playingtimemayvaryfromgametogame,orfromweektoweek.Neitherthe player’sgradenorprioryearsofplayingexperiencewithUTSteams,willbea factorindeterminingplayingtime.
Duringtheregularseason,coachesareencouragedtoconsiderthefollowing recommendationsforminimumplayingtimeforathletes,butultimatelydecisions regardingplayingtimeshallbeatthediscretionofthecoach.
Foundation Evenlydistributed JuniorVarsity approximately60% SeniorVarsity approximately40%
Forleague,regional,andprovincialplayoffstherearenorecommendations.
Communication
Clearcommunicationbetweencoachandplayer,playerandparent,parentand coach,andbetweenplayersiscriticaltoavoidmisunderstanding.This communicationcanbeinitiatedandmaintainedinanumberofways:
● Priortothebeginningoftryouts,coachesshouldprovideawritten statementoftheirphilosophy,teamgoals,anyfeesthatmaybeincurred, andplayerexpectations.
● Coachesshouldoutlinetheprocessforcommunication.Thisprocess appliestoallparties,andcanbeoutlinedforallinanemail SeeAppendix A
● Coachescanholdapre-seasonmeeting(suggestedagenda AppendixB
● Allplayersmusthaveaconsentformcompletedbytheirparent/guardian priortoparticipationforallathleticteams.
SanctionedAbsencesandEarlyDismissals
Itisattimesnecessaryforstudentathletestobeabsentfromclasses,ortobe releasedfromclasspriortotheendoftheday Intheseinstancescoachesare requiredtoprovidenoticetoallschoolstaff.
CommunitybasedcoachesshallinformtheAthleticDirectorofthedatesand times,andtheAthleticDirectorshallberesponsibletoexecutethistask.

Thecoachisresponsibleforthedistributionandcollectionofalluniformsatthe startandendoftheseason Ensuretheyhavebeenwashedbeforetheyare returnedtotheAD.Undernocircumstancesarestudent-athletestokeepjerseys!
AllordersofuniformswillbedonebytheAthleticDirector.Coacheswillinformthe ADabouthowmanyuniformsareneeded,thetimeline,sizes/numbersandwill consultwithregardstothedesign.
GameReporting
Uponthecompletionofanathleticcontest,coachesneedtoreportresultstothe AthleticDirectorassoonasreasonablypossible Thisincludes:finalscore,top scorer/finisher,outstandingperformances,gamestar/MVPetcandpicturesfor socialmediaposts.
ProfessionalDevelopment
Itisinthebestinterestsofthestudentathletestohavecoacheswhoarewell trained.Insupportofthis,coacheswillbereimbursedforregistrationinapproved professionaldevelopmentactivitiesthataredirectlyrelatedtotheircoaching assignment ApprovalwillbemadebytheAthleticDirector,andmustbesupported byreceipts.

Supporttheschool,theteams,theplayers,andthecoaches.
HelpyourchildtofollowandupholdtheUTSathletes’guidelinesforparticipation
Bothparentingandcoachingaredifficultvocations.Byestablishingan understandingofeachposition,wearebetterabletoaccepttheactionsofthe otherandprovidegreaterbenefitstostudents.Itisalsoveryimportantto rememberthatcoachesarevolunteersandtheyaregivingtheirvaluabletimeto workandhelpimproveyourchild’sleadershipabilities,socialskills,team cooperationandresponsibility.Herearesomeguidelinestohelpyouasaparent supporteroftheathleticsprogramsatUTS.
Communicationcoachesexpectfromstudent-athletes:

Therearesituationsthatmayrequireaconferencebetweenthecoachandthe parent Thesearetobeencouragedbutthefollowingproceduresshouldbe followedtohelppromotearesolutiontotheissueofconcern:

● resolution,notconfrontationisthebestapproach

HighSchool
EachyearinJune,aftertheconclusionofallschoolsponsoredathleticactivities theAthleticDepartmentwillsponsorandhostanAnnualAthleticCelebration.At thisevent,individualactivityawardsasdeterminedbytheathleticdepartment, andselectedbytherespectivecoachingstaffs,shallbepresented.Inaddition,the AthletesoftheYear,TrueBlues,andVarsityLetterrecipientsasselectedbya designatedcommitteeshallbepresented
