GEOMETRIC

Geometric though it is, Futura is one of the most rythmical san-serifs ever made. Its proportions are graceful and humane.

R The aura of machine precision that emanates from a type like Futura is reinforced by a smooth paper and contradicted by a paper that feels homespun.

R

The calming, abstract forms of those new typefaces that dispense with handwritten movement offer the typographer new shapes of tonal value that are very purely attuned. These types can be used in light, semi-bold, or in saturated black forms. — Paul Renner, 1931

Futura is very similar to the typefaces Century Gothic and Twentieth Century. Century Gothic is especially similar to Futura, with only slight variations in line weight between the two. They are both very geometric and symmetric. Twentieth Century is also very geometric and similar, only not quite as symmetric with a heavier line weight.

GOUDY OLD STYLE

Futura being a sans-serif typeface is different from the serif typefaces Times New Roman and Goudy Old Style. Notice the small decorative flourishes at the ends of the strokes on the Times New Roman and Goudy Old Style typefaces. Serif fonts are usually easier to read in printed works than sans-serif fonts.

In 1943 “Rosie the Riveter” shocked everyone when she sold out to the man and began tattooing her body with corporate logos for money. The “We Can Do It” poster became known as a symbol for capitalism and has been used as propaganda for big business ever since.

JUST KIDDING! “We Can Do It!” is an American wartime propaganda poster produced by J. Howard Miller in 1943 for Westinghouse Electric as an inspirational image to boost worker morale. Often called “We Can Do It!” but also called “Rosie the Riveter” after the iconic figure of a strong but feminine war production worker. The “We Can Do It!” image was used to promote feminism and other political issues beginning in the 1980s.
