ARTE − FACTUM HARDWARE STORE BUILDING BY HUIB HOSTE KORTRIJK, BELGIUM 1. 7 − 15. 7. 2021
Zuzana Bartošová, Andrea Uváčiková
The project is based on the morphology of the Hardware store building, which has undergone changes over the years. Our goal is to point out the development of the external features of the building. We want to relate the features that the building bears to the ideas of modernity (in architecture) through its contextualization.
Components positioned at 90-degrees to each other and an emphasis on horizontal and vertical lines. The use of reinforced concrete and steel. Visual expression of the structure rather than hiding structural elements. Following the ‘machine aesthetic’ in the use of materials produced by industrial processes. Rectangular, cylindrical and cubic shapes Asymmetrical compositions. A lack of ornament or mouldings. Large windows set in horizontal bands. Open plan floors. White or cream facades.
1.
RESEARCHING (history of the building and its changes)
2.
MODELS (copy of some parts of building, modifications)
3.
POSTCARDS / VIDEOS (explaining ideas of modernism)
4.
MAPS (big and small circuit)
5.
ACTIONS WITH PUBLIC (guided walk and collecting postcards or stencils for screenprinting)
6.
WORKSHOP (screenprinted postcards)
We will choose architecturally interesting parts of the exterior and interior of the building, from which we plan to create scale 3D models and animate them.
Choosing an interesting parts of the building according to its historical changes. It will also be our research part of project: to find out, how has the building changed over time. We already have some materials about the building history, bud we would like to talk about it deeply with the owners of building.
We would like to create 3D models made from concrete and another models (probably 3D printed) which shows its own transformation. The models will be enriched with animations which, with the help of augmented reality (Artivive app), bring the viewer closer to the principles of modern architecture.
The models will be enriched with animations which, with the help of augmented reality (Artivive app), bring the viewer closer to the principles of modern architecture. We consider to place QR codes near the models or do interactive posters / postcards.
In the end of our residency we would like to do guide walk around the city and serigraphy workshop for public, where everybody can print his/her own “modern postcard”. The workshop will consist of printing postcards using the screen printing technique . By the postcard the people will spread pieces of modern architecture around the world. Original postcard collection can be also exhibited in Kaunas.
We will design two maps: 1. City circuit 2. Hardware store circuit The first one will be marked with artifacts that should lead the public to the building where the serigraphy workshop will take place. The marked places will show to the public interesting places which are connected to the architect Huib Hoste or places which should better show the context of modern architecture.
Nieuwstraat 29: the former Vancanneyt hardware store Hoek Ooievaarsstraat / Sint-Maartensplein: a former pharmacy-drugstore, now bistro 'Chez Koen' in a modernist style. Steenakker (no. 37): the former inn 'Au Canon', now lingerie shop 'Lingerie Marie’ Molenstraat (Nos. 7-9): mansion Groenstraat (nos. 30-34): renovaSon of an old molding facade Groenstraat (no. 36): conversion of an 18th-century house
We would like to place small cases for postcards in the public space. Maybe we also place there small pieces of cutted foil (for screenprinting) which people can collect during the walk.
The second map, circuit in the Hardware Store building refers to the transformation of the building. We would like to place our transformed 3D models enriched with animations inside the building.
We will create a series of models that act as museum artifacts, and the architecture of our exhibition is also conceived in this style. The artifacts will be supplemented by QR codes or posters with animations. Video documentation from activities during our residence in Kortrijk has also be a part of final exhibition in Kaunas.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATENTION.
