Night Life 13.1 miles in the dark Instead of running in the heat of mid-morning, ever wanted to run a half marathon race in the middle of the night, under a full moon? You can get your chance at the frouth annual running of Utah's Mapleton Moonlight Half Marathon, which is run in the thick of summer but at night, so the air should be cooled off by the time runners begin their race, between 9:00 and 10:00 PM in the evening. Planned as a fundraising event for the Mapleton Lateral Canal Parkway Trail -- a paved trailway for running, walking, cycling and hiking that will stretch from nearby Springville at the Hobble Creek Parkway Trail to Spanish Fork

term found in Greek mythology referring to the descendants of Perseus. The stream of debris is called the Perseid cloud and stretches along the orbit of the comet Swift-Tuttle. The cloud consists of particles ejected by the comet as it travels on its 130-year orbit. Most of the dust in the cloud today is around a thousand
just south of Mapleton -- the race is open to a maximum of 500 entrants, and follows a point-topoint course that starts on Canyon Drive, near the intersection with Left Fork Hobble Creek Road, and finishes at Ira Allen Park in Mapleton. To get to the starting line, runners are asked to drive to and park at Ira Allen Park (which lies near the intersection of West 1600 South and South 800 West). Race organizers will have shuttle buses waiting to ferry runners to the starting line, the area known as Jolley's Ranch on Canyon Road. Runners will leave the starting line at a time that will get them to the finish line around midnight, by their own estimation -- so faster runners should leave later, and slower runners earlier (to gauge when you should start the race, consult the race's pace chart here). From the starting line, runners head eastward and northward along Right Fork Hobble Road first, heading to the turnaround point just before the 2nd mile marker and then heading back

southward along the road. For the next 11 miles, runners head west through the canyon back toward Mapleton, passing by the Hobble Creek Golf Course along the way. As runners are passing the mile 7 marker, the course then heads out of the canyon and into the western edges of the city, taking runners toward Main Street and Ira Allen Park for the finish. With the exception of an uphill stretch between the start and the second mile marker, the race unfolds almost entirely downhill for the rest of the race, dropping about 600 feet in elevation from the start to the finish line. Located along the edge of the Unita National Forest in the northern central part of the state, about 10 miles south of Provo, the city of Mapleton typically experiences moderately warm to hot weather conditions in the late summer season, and usually dry weather year-round. In August, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 90°F and 58°F -- on Aug. 12, the
average high is 91°F and the average low is 59°F -- while rainfall totals average just over an inch for the month. This is meant to be a fun run, so we will start about 9:00 or 10:00pm. Slower runners earlier, faster runners later, (you decide exactly when). Awards will be given for the first across the finish line after midnight. No timing devices will be allowed. This way those of us that never win a race have a chance. It will be a full moon and we will have glow necklaces and bracelets. Most people will cross the finish line around midnight, then the after party begins. There will be lots of food and we will have music. This will be a fund raising event for the Mapleton Parkway Trail. We are somewhat limited to the number of people we can accomodate so sign up as soon as possible. Go to active.com to sign up. Of course all this is subject to change. If you are not wearing your bib number you will be asked to leave the race.
This will be the funnest half marathon you will ever do. This is a race to see who can cross the finish line at midnight or after without crossing too early. There will be no timing devices allowed. You start when you think it will be the right time so you can cross the finish line at midnight. It's a party from start to finish! This is a fundraising race. All the money will go to the Mapleton Parkway Trail. This is so a running trail can be put through Mapleton along parts of the old canal road. There will be a party after with ice cream, drinks, food, etc... We will be supplying some glow in the dark lights. Extras can be bought or you can bring some yourself. Lighted costumes are encouraged. Awards will be given for best lighted costume. We also picked this night because it is going to be a full moon so it will be easier to see. There was a full moon and we all wore glow sticks and/or headlamps. I've never participated in such a relaxed and fun race. We visited and
laughed all the way down, and out of, the canyon and through the streets of Mapleton. At the finish, there was music and good food. Lyle and I used it as our Date Night and it really was such a fun date....much better than boring old dinner and a good evening movie! Anyway....Lyle pushed it at the end and came in 1 second shy of midnight, which meant he "lost." I felt we might be too fast, so I'd hesitated and came in about 6 seconds later. But right in front of me was a group of 4 who took up the whole chute and I couldn't have gotten past them if I'd be inclined to try. Well, they ended up being the first 4 to come in at, or after, midnight. I was in that dreaded spot just after the medals' spots. Lyle and I got a good laugh at our misfortune, then went off to load up on fruit, bagels, ice cream and water.
