Important Information • Kindergartners must be five years old by June 13, 2022, and must have prior five-days-a-week school experience to participate in our program. This rule will be strictly enforced. Children who do not meet this requirement will be subject to immediate withdrawal without a refund given.

What Is College for Kids & Teens? College for Kids & Teens (CFK&T) through the School of Continuing Education is a hands-on enrichment program for students entering grades K5-12 who have high academic potential, motivation and talent. Established in 1980, we will be celebrating our 42nd year! The program consists of one- and two-week classes in Creative Arts, Humanities/Social Sciences, Languages & Cultures, Math & Computers and Science. Taught by UW system faculty or highly qualified and experienced instructors, all programs provide an “academic edge,” and class sizes are limited to 16 students unless otherwise noted. Registration Policy Once your child or teen is registered, there are no refunds or transfers. Refunds are made only for classes canceled by CFK&T. This policy is specific to College for Kids & Teens and does not apply to School of Continuing Education courses.

• Specialty courses have a $5-25 computer lab/special materials fee included in the price. • For chemistry classes, closed-toe shoes must be worn at all times; no flip-flops or sandals. • For dance and theater classes, students must bring another pair of shoes to change into in order to participate. Please make sure your child brings appropriate shoes to class each day; no flip-flops or sandals. • Disruptive students are taken to the CFK&T office and their parents are notified. Continued disruption results in removal from the program without refund of fees.

Classes that do not reach sufficient enrollment by May 13, 2022, will be canceled. Please register before this date to ensure classes run.

• Some classes are designed for a broader range of students (e.g., grades 6-12) and others are more specifically targeted – look for grade levels listed next to each program number.

Our program is subject to UW-System and UWM Policy with regards to on campus, in-person youth programming. This may affect aspects to our delivery of programming including a need for Covid-19 testing, social distancing, age group cohorting and reduced class sizes. Any information related to these Covid-19 health and safety policies and procedures decisions as well as the possibility of reverting to an online delivery method can be found on our website. Updates will be made as policy has been mandated from UW-System and UWM. Our policy states that we do not offer refunds or transfers after registration. Students enrolled in back-to-back classes or before/after care will be chaperoned to their next destination. No extended supervision (longer than the 30 minutes between consecutive class times) is available between 9am and 4pm.

Before and After Care To make things easier for students and parents, we offer supervised care in Merrill Hall at a location TBD for before and after the program day for a minimal charge. Please refer to our website closer to the beginning of the program for further details. Chaperoning children to or from class is included in the fee. Come early or stay late. You must sign up for the full week. Late Pick-up Policy for After Care Please be advised that after care ends by 5:30pm. If families are late for pick up there will be a $10 charge for every 10 minutes that the student is not picked up (5:41pm= $10, 5:55pm= $20 etc.). If a child is left in our care until 6pm we are required to take the child to the campus police department. Before Care 7:30-9am – $30/week or $50/two-week session (students may not be dropped off before 7:30 am if they have any other wrist band color than orange) After Care 4-5:30pm – $30/week or $50/two-week session

Making the Move to High School Art!

Sculptural Forms (3D) – Working with a variety of materials and processes related to making 3D forms, this materials-rich course will work between 2D and 3D spaces, from drawing ideas to visualizing them in clay, wire, plaster and other materials. No prior experience needed to take on this 3D exploration.

This class helps students build 2D skills in a variety of media and approaches and get ready to take on art at the high school level. For current 8th graders, entering grade 9 in fall 2022.

Digital Art – Peck School of the Arts digital art instructors lead high school students through the wonders of drawing and painting digitally. This class will teach the basics of creating with a variety of digital products, including Adobe as well as freeware. Entrepreneurial Data Science

This introductory course develops computational thinking and tools necessary to answer questions that arise from large-scale datasets. This course emphasizes an end-to-end approach to data science, introducing programming techniques in Python that cover data processing, modeling, and analysis.

Probability and statistics courses teach skills in understanding whether data is meaningful, including optimization, inference, testing and other methods for analyzing patterns in data and using them to predict, understand and improve results. Learn about how statistics can be used in everyday life to summarize datasets and draw conclusions from them. Study mean, median, mode, range, quartiles, box-and-line plots, standard deviation and how to find untrustworthy observations in a dataset. Then learn about using basic probability rules to study probability distributions and make predictions about them.

In this course the students apply data science to a real-world application and create a start-up company in an interest area of their choosing. The students implement and apply innovation in technology to get a better understanding of data and how it affects business. The students also use an understanding of design thinking to help understand and utilize data in creating a pitch for their start-up business.

First, how can data be extracted that describes realworld phenomenon? This part of the course includes data collection, processing, cleaning ("munging"), and dealing with formatted and semi-formatted data (e.g., json). Second, how can data be modeled and used to make predictions? This includes methods in regression and classification, and experimental design. And third, how can the results of this analysis be understood and reasoned? This includes topics in visualization, and methods for hypothesis testing and validation. The course involves hands-on analysis of a variety of real-world datasets, including economic data, document collections, geographical data and social networks. SPECIAL PROGRAMS THE UWM WRITING PROJECT The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Writing Project (UWMWP) is an active chapter of the National Writing Project (NWP). Founded in 1974, NWP’s ongoing mission is to provide writing teachers resources and training in order to cultivate new methods of teaching, research on teaching and a passionately professional writing community. Teacher-Consultants (TCs) participate in an accredited, graduate-level Summer Institute, as well as smaller in-services throughout the year. What makes TCs unique is their pledge and dedication to writing. This passion includes creating new ways to inspire writers of all ages and a personal commitment to their own writing practices. The partnership of College for Kids & Teens (CFK&T) with the UWMWP allows student writers an opportunity to work with three professionally and academically trained TCs per class! These instructors utilize materials from the NWP to create a supportive and engaged writing community, which provides students with a week of invigorating writing experience. Furthermore, both CFK&T and the UWMWP share the goal of community building. So, the TCs selected to work each week are passionate writers from the Metro Milwaukee community.

The UWM Writing Project – Young Writers’ Academy

Sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Writing Project, this writing class is designed specifically for teen students who are interested in practicing writing across three genres: Fiction, Poetry and Nonfiction/Essay. These classes are facilitated by experienced writers and teachers – trained Teacher-Consultants with the UWM Writing Project – who introduce writing activities that are fun, helpful and inspiring to the imagination.

Back by popular demand, this University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Writing Project’s (UWMWP) camp is for aspiring writers who are entering grades 6-8. During the camp, we meet each day in writing groups. This camp is facilitated by Teacher-Consultants (TCs), experienced writers and teachers who are involved in the UWMWP – and these TCs have a common goal of inspiring the imaginations and composition skills of young writers! We write daily in a creative, supportive environment. While writers of all abilities are welcome, we focus on some introductory concepts as well as more nuanced, stylistic skills.

Special Programs

Water is the key to our health, our wealth and our way of life. In collaboration with the UWM School of Freshwater Sciences, students explore the watersheds of both the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan to get a better understanding of the health and importance of our local waterways. This program is facilitated by the School of Freshwater Sciences’ Outreach Manager Liz Sutton with visits from scientists and graduate students working in the field.

This camp spends three days in the classroom learning the science and techniques involved in exploring our local watersheds and two days applying new knowledge in the field. Beginning Guitar Designed for the beginning guitar student, survey aspects of playing the acoustic guitar and how to be a better musician. Learn basic concepts of how to read music (pitch and rhythm), playing the guitar from written music, music theory and the architecture of the fingerboard, technique, and performance. In this class students will be introduced to digital drawing and design to model 2D and 3D designs using the computer program Rhino3D. Potter’s Wheel

Smartphone Photography Like a Pro

Learn to shape clay on the potter’s wheel! Students will create a variety of forms on the wheel and learn to trim, alter, and decorate their work. Students can work functionally or sculpturally by combining wheel thrown forms. Individual invention, creativity, and experimentation are encouraged.

Learn to take quality images with your smartphone camera and editing with a free and powerful app used widely by hobbyists and professionals. We will also learn how to tell compelling stories with still images by using light, shadows, and other composition and editing techniques. By the end of the session students will create a photo portfolio of selected images from the session. Please note that by registering for this class you provide permission for your child to access the Internet. This course has a requirement of the student to provide their own mobile device with charging cord and a flash drive.

“Claw” and “Peck” your way through this class as you discover various types of predator/prey relationships. Sharpen your fangs to discover how it feels to be at the top of the food chain, but don’t get eaten as you fall to the bottom as prey.

Many kids love to read fantasy novels like Lord of the Rings. Most of them do not have the chance to design their own characters and write their own stories. Spend the week going where most students do not. Use your imagination to craft and write about characters from your wildest dreams.

In this class we will use project-based curriculum as the design to present students with challenges that they will solve using a creative approach to engineering solutions. Fly into the wild blue yonder as we learn about the basics of aeronautics and Bernoulli’s principle. Build complex paper airplanes, a balsa wood glider and test our planes in a wind tunnel. Become an aerospace engineer and design a parachute system that will safely land a raw egg from a fall of fifty feet! The final class project will include building hot air balloons with your classmates.

HELP!!! Bob has gotten himself into another crazy situation! In this class the students will use engineering, creativity, teamwork, and imagination to rescue our hero Bob from one sticky situation after another. From evading coyotes by crossing the Grand Canyon to escaping a burning inferno of a building the students will use engineering utilizing everyday materials to help Bob to safety.
