Master of Science Programs in Engineering and Computer Science
UWM IS A TOP-TIER RESEARCH UNIVERSITY UWM is one of only 131 top research universities in the Carnegie Classification’s “highest research activity” category, known as Research 1, or R1. It’s also one of only two public universities in Wisconsin offering engineering degrees through the doctoral level. The College of Engineering & Applied Science features state-of-the-art labs with the most advanced technology and equipment essential for scientific discovery. For example, the College of Engineering & Applied Science has the only dry lab of its kind for energy storage research at a North American university.
MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ENGINEERING The MS in Engineering program, designed for both working professionals and aspiring researchers, includes a Thesis Option and a Non-Thesis Option. It’s shared by all the departments in the College of Engineering & Applied Science. Applicants choose the area of focus for their studies from the following concentrations: • • • • •
Biomedical Civil Electrical and Computer Energy Engineering Mechanics
• • • •
Industrial and Systems Manufacturing Materials Mechanical
• Occupational Biomechanics/Ergonomics
CIVIL ENGINEERING/URBAN PLANNING DUAL MASTER OF SCIENCE Transportation engineers and planners address complex and interconnected issues, which require engineers to understand planning and planners to grasp engineering skills. Students develop relevant, in-demand expertise in planning and in engineering, from freeway congestion to the “last mile” challenge of connecting transit users to their final destination. MASTER OF SCIENCE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE The MS in Computer Science provides students with a broad background in important aspects of computer science. Students gain expertise in areas like software engineering, algorithms, machine learning, graphics and natural language processing. There are two tracks for the MS in CS program: the Regular Track (with thesis and capstone options) and the Professional Track (capstone only). The professional track is offered online, on campus or as a combination of both. Pathways exist for students without a computer science background.
ACCELERATED MASTER OF SCIENCE To encourage outstanding undergraduate engineering and computer science students to continue their studies toward an advanced degree, the College of Engineering & Applied Science allows qualified undergraduate students to begin their master’s degree coursework in their senior year. Students admitted to the Accelerated Master’s Program take six graduate credits at undergraduate rates as part of the BS degree requirements, saving time and money. Students apply to the MS program at the beginning of the final undergraduate semester.
