SELECTED WORKS
"What I enjoy most about architecture is the relationship between scientific and humanistic themes. What really moves me is that the design of a building should be harmonious between theoretical, social (macro and micro), emotive, functional and technical characteristics, yet simultaneously relate respectfully to its context.

INTRODUCTION
In every university project I have worked on so far, I have always tried to ensure a well balanced treatment of any of those aspects and to tackle the needs of the built environment and its users in the most critical and open minded manner as possible." - Uwais Hamman (CPUT Architectural Technology Undergraduate)

HARDSHIP TO RELIEF
THE DESIGN OF THE SPACE WAS INFLUENCED BY THE NOTION OF THE TRANS -ITION FROM ONE CONDITION TO THE NEXT, SPECIFICALLY REFERRING TO THE QURANIC VERSE FROM SURAH ASH-SHARH [94:6] 'INDEED WITH HARDSHIP COMES RELIEF". THE SPACE EXISTS WITHIN AN UNDERWATER CAVE WHICH BREACHES THE SURFACE OF THE OCEAN. ITT ILLUSTRATES THE TRANSITION FROM HARDSHIP TO RELIEF THROUGH THE FLUCTUATION OF THE SPCACES, STARTING OFF CHALLENGING AND BECOMING EASIER AS IT PROGRESSES.

UWAIS HAMMAN - 213083396 - PAD PROJECT
HARDSHIP IS SAID TO BE A CONDITION THAT IS DIFFICULT TO ENDURE, AS THERE IS A DEPREVATION OF NECESSITIES AND COMFORT WHILST EXPERIE -NCING IT. OFTEN WE GO THROUGH THIS STATE IN A PERIOD OF OUR LIFE TIME AND MAY EITHER MAKE OR BREAK THE HUMAN SPIRIT WITHIN. RELIEF SITS ON THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE SPECTRUM. ITS A FEELING OF REASSUR -ANCE AND RELAXATION FOLLOWING RELEASE FROM ANXIETY AND DISTRESS. IT IS USUALLY THE CONDITION WHICH OCCURS AFTER HARDSHIP AND MAY SERVE AS MOTIVATION TO REMOVE ONSELF FROM IT.

THE MAIN CONCEPTUAL WORD AND CORE DESIGN INFORMANT WAS INTEGRATION. DUE TO PRINCESS VLEIS SITE SENSITIVIY AND EVER IMPOSING THRE -ATS OF INVASIVE FACTORS, MY INITIATIVE WAS FOR THE PROPOSED STRUCTURE TO INTEGRATE WITH THE SITE, FORMING A SYMBIOTIC COHESIVE -NESS BETWEEN STRUCTURE, LAND AND MAN. THE DESIGN INTENDS TO BE SAFE, ACCESABLE & VIABLE AND IS ACHIEVED THROUGH ITS MASSING SCHEME OF ITS SPACES. THREE NODES ARE PROVIDED, LINKED BY 'GREEN LUNGS' (MAIN COURTYARD & KIDS PLAY/VEGGIE GAR DEN). THE THREE NODES ARE RECEPTIVE TO EACH OTHER OPERATING HOLISTICALLY OR SEPERATELY DEPENDING ON THE TIME OF DAY (OFFERS 24 HOUR - 6-7 DAY USAGE). THE URBAN GREEN SPACES FURTHER PROVIDES AREAS WHICH THE CITY LACKS, IE AREAS FOR URBAN FARMING WHICH MAY EXTEND TO THE PUBLIC (FEEDING SCHEMES FOR THE POOR). OVERALL WITH ACHIEVING THE ABOVE THE BUILDINGS PRESENCE AIMS AT CREATING AN INTERGRATION BETWEEN ITS SURROUNDING CONTEXT (SYMBIOTIC BALANCE), YET GENTLY STAND OUT, INSPIRING ITS USERS AND THOSE WHICH PASS BY. ULTIMATELY THE DESIGN INTENT IS TO SHIFT FROM SEGREGATED LINES EXISTING WIHTIN THE CITY.,

THE MAIN CONCEPTUAL DRIVING FORCE FOR THE DESIGN WAS THE TERM SYMBIOTIC-BALANCE. IT MAY BE BROKEN UP INTO THE FOLLOWING WORDS IN WHICH IT IS DERIVED: A) SYMBIOSIS - INTERACTION BETWEEN TWO DIFFERENT ORGA -NISMS/ELEMENTS IN CLOSE PHYSICAL ASSOCIATION, TYPICAL -LY TO THE ADVANTAGE OF BOTH. B) BALANCE - DISTRIBUTION OF WEIGHT/FORCE AMONG VISUAL UNITS. MAY BE SYMMETRICAL, ASSYMETRICAL OR RADIAL. THE CONCEPT MAY BE BROKEN DOWN & ILLUSTRATE THE VARI -OUS RELATIONS WHICH INFLUENCES THE OVERALL DESIGN:
