“On a sunny day, you can see Kyushu from here.”, explains Mr Ninomiya, while we pick another orange from the tree. UWAJIMA DEEP | DECEMBER 2015 06 Taga-‐jinja in Uwajima is (in)famous far beyond Japan’s borders. What very few know, however, is that a small sub-‐shrine located on the precincts of Taga-‐jinja carries a not less interesCng story. In Japan some people believe, that if an inmate object reaches a certain age, a deity or demon may inhabit it as a vessel, and dolls seem especially aOracPve as this kind of h o u s i n g . Af ra i d o f b e i n g i n possession of a cursed doll and not able to throw it away, because this might anger the spirit, they bring it to a shrine, like the Awashima-‐jinja i n U w a j i m a , w h e re a p r i e s t p e r fo r m s a ce re m o ny c a l l e d "Kuyou" to clean the possessed doll and put it to rest. If you’re not scared easily and you believe that an exorcism is able to get rid of the evil, just then you might want to visit the shrine and look in the eyes of the many different dolls, each one carrying a different story of how they arrived here.
