UWAJIMA DEEP

TENSHA-‐EN 002 There are many reasons to visit the Tensha-‐en garden, that’s why we separated them into small chunks, presented in an ongoing series. Today in the second part we will introduce to you the two building of the Tensha-‐en garden. Entering the garden you will find a tea room (Sen-‐en-‐kan), where the 7th lord of Uwajima han, Date Munetada would enjoy tea ceremonies. A stone formaQon (In-‐yo-‐seki) represenQng male and female in front of the tea room was intended, not only to secure the clans ferQlity but also prosperity of future generaQons. Nowadays, on special occasions you too can enjoy a tea ceremony in this building. Just next to the Sen-‐en-‐kan, you will find the Harusame-‐tei a house built for the sole purpose of Date Munetada’s biggest hobby the Calligraphy. This art form, would accompany the lord for his whole long life. Even with 94 years he sQll conQnued to create new scrolls. Special about this building is the fact, that no nails where used to built it. Maybe these two retreats in the Tensha-‐en garden and their tranquility were the reason why Date Munetada conQnued a healthy life Qll the age of 100.

TANABE SHŌWA MUSEUM For the connoisseur of Japanese Shōwa period movies, this liale museum inside Uwajima’s arcades offers a collecQon of movie posters from the good old days of cinema and highlights those art pieces filmed in Uwajima or related to Uwajima in some way. There are memorabilia and photos of stars from the past on display. But there is even more. Old black and white photographies of a Qme long gone, decorate the walls. The old streets of Uwajima with its restaurants, ryokans and shops immortalised for future generaQons. Past generaQons of locals, that stood out from the masses, like the UFO researcher Seike Shinichi and his work find a sanctuary in the walls of Tanabe’s Shōwa Museum. But that is another story you will find soon on Uwajima Deep.
