FacSocs

NUS

Every faculty has its own society, known collectively as the FacSocs. These societies sit on the Education Council, and represent the students studying in that faculty. We recommend getting involved or at least following your FacSoc on social media to stay up to date with anything important regarding your faculty! You can find members of your Faculty Society every Wednesday from 12pm 2pm participating in Inter-Faculty Sport with a free barbecue every week.

BLACKSTONE SOCIETY

The National Union of Students (NUS) is the peak representative body for tertiary students in Australia, with 18 universities affiliated across the country. Established in 1987, the NUS advocates for accessible and equitable education and welfare system for all. The on-going role is advocacy, lobbying, organising National Days of Action around a variety of issues (like climate action and sexual assault), and supporting campus office bearers in their roles. The NUS also commissions a number of research papers to substantiate campaigns and effectively lobby for change. UWA is proud to be affiliated to the NUS. We have a strong history of being involved in the NUS, with a number of UWA students on the National Executive in recent years. The NUS provides us access to a network of campuses to communicate and collaborate with in order to achieve common goals. Every year the UWA Student Guild sends seven elected delegates to the NUS National Conference to move and debate important policies for the NUS to implement. We also send students to a number of other conferences run by the NUS, such as Education Conference where attendees debate and reform our campus education goals, and present workshops to other universities on how to improve their campus experience. In addition, the annual President’s Summit allows our campus leaders to develop their skills of leadership, share ideas, and network with other student leaders.

transport and parking Parking at UWA is a hot commodity during semester, and unfortunately as a first year you generally can’t apply for a parking permit. So if the yellow permit bays are off-limits, what are your options?

Drive There is all-day ticketed parking all along Hackett Drive and Fairway, plus shortterm paid parking in front of Reid Library and along Oak Lawn. If you’re rocking up later in the day make sure you leave enough time before your classes in case a few laps are needed before you can snag a space. The parking inspectors are pretty vigilant at UWA, so make sure you always buy a ticket!

BIKE UWA’s central location makes cycling to uni super easy. The cycle path on Mounts Bay Rd from the CBD - UWA and the back streets through Claremont and Dalkeith are popular cycle routes. Make sure you wear a helmet!! Bike racks are available all over campus, or you can register with UWA Security for secure bike parking. Got a long commute on a hot day? There are showers available at UWA Sport, Reid Library and a bunch of other places at UWA, so you don’t have to sit in your sweaty gear all day.

BUS Buses to UWA are frequent, so public transport is a really good option. Services that stop at UWA are: Circle route: 998 and 999 Route 24 (East Perth – Claremont via Kings Park Rd) Route 96 (Leederville – UWA South via QEII) Route 97 (Subiaco – UWA South via QEII) Route 102 (Elizabeth Quay – Cottesloe via Claremont) Route 103 (East Perth – Freo via Stirling Hwy) Route 107 (Elizabeth Quay – Freo via Claremont) Route 950 (Morley – QEII via Beaufort St/Perth City/UWA)

GUILD services Parking at UWA is a hot commodity during semester, and unfortunately as a first year you generally can’t apply for a parking permit (you need to have completed at least 48 credit points). So if the yellow permit bays are off-limits, what are your options?

Bookshop The Secondhand Bookshop in Guild Village is so much more than just a bookshop – you’ll find textbooks, gifts, unit readers, secondhand lab coats and heaps more here, all at very reasonable prices! And once you’re finished with your textbooks (or your regular fiction books), you can hand them in to the Bookshop and they will sell them for you. You keep 75% of the profits, and have to put in 0% of the effort – how good. You can also pick up your Transperth Smartrider here to make public transport super easy – not to mention concession fares.

student assist Struggling at uni or at home, or just want someone to talk to? The lovely team at Student Assist are a group of Social Workers and a Wellbeing Counsellor, who offer totally FREE advice, counselling and advocacy for students on everything from academic issues to welfare or financial concerns.

get involved Keep track of what’s on The Guild website and the UWA App have an Events Calendar with everything on there, so you can stay up to date with what’s happening on campus! uwastudentguild.com/events

JOIN A CLUB! The best way to join a club is to visit them at O-DAY or Club Carnival in week 2. Most of the clubs will have stalls, giving you the chance to sample pretty much everything on offer and make a first impression on committee members if

you’re thinking about joining as a fresher rep! Like the Facebook pages of the clubs you join or are interested in joining, so you never miss and event. We recommend you join your FacSoc first and foremost, and from there any other clubs you are interested in.

Getting on to a club committee Attending the first couple of events a club holds is a great opportunity to meet current committee members as well as other keen freshers with similar interests!

Want to dive right in? Keep an eye out for opportunities to join Guild committees and subcommittees with SOC, PAC and all the student departments!

Guild Committees Student representation on our committees is super important to the success of the Guild. The committees at the Guild are: -C atering and Tavern aims to continually improve the food and drink on campus -S tudent Services manages the frontline services of the Guild and how the Guild can make university more enjoyable for students -C orporate Services discusses new ideas, plans and strategies to improve the Guild’s corporate operations -G overnance guides the rules and policies of the Guild and is in charge of interpreting Guild Regulations -W elfare and Advocacy advises Guild Council on issues affecting the student experience on campus -E quity and Diversity creates policies that establish an environment that celebrates and the advancement of equity and diversity throughout campus -V olunteering and Community Engagement works to build a culture of student-led volunteering and community engagement on campus

Guild Council Hot Tips: -C ouncil nominations open in August, and elections take place in November -S ub-Council and Department committees are elected in late October/ early November -P elican (the student magazine) also chooses their editors at the end of the year, and sub-editors at the beginning of the following year!

DID YOU KNOW? The UWA Student Guild elections are one of the biggest student elections in the country!

Study smarter, not harder If you know where to look, UWA has a heap of study tools and resources available to make you better at it and keep that GPA on track!

STUDYSmarter STUDYSmarter has a range of academic support services for students. They hold regular workshops, covering research skills, study techniques and academic skills throughout the semester. They also have weekly English academic writing and communicating workshops from Week 1 to Week 7, which is a great resource if English is your second language. They’ve also got WRITESmart Drop-in sessions from 10am-12pm every week from Monday to Friday, where you can bring your essay and get advice on how to improve it – super useful! There are heaps of free resources, including survival guides, assignment date calculator (an amazing tool to help you break down your assignment, and calculate which part of the assessment you should complete by when), learning videos, and a lot more on STUDYSmarter’s website: www.student.uwa.edu.au/learning/ studysmarter

The Library Lowdown Get to know your Reid from your Barry J, and everything they have to offer! The UWA Libraries website has Library Survival Guides covering all you need to know on finding, using and referencing information for your academic work. OneSearch, a search engine developed by UWA Library, will be your best friend when it comes to finding quality journals and other academic papers for assignments! The libraries can also help out with printing, scanning, and booking study spaces at libraries across campus for private or group study. HOT TIP: You should be able to find earlier editions of your textbooks in the library, but you’ll need to be quick around exam time to get your hands on one!

Best study spots on campus EZONE As a brand-new building, EZONE is quiet and super modern. Make the most of it before everyone works out the secret! CCZ The Club Collaborative Zone upstairs in Guild Village has bookable rooms and open-plan study spaces. It’s less crowded than the libraries, and the Ref food court is right underneath for snacking purposes on those all-important study breaks.

LIBRARIES There’s almost always a quiet corner in one of the libraries if you know where to look. Be warned: if you’re looking to be productive, stay far away from the Ground Floor of Reid Library!

BEST UNITS GUIDE We’ve taken recommendations from the students of UWA for their favourite units – whether they are interesting, fun or an easy HD! Check out the full guide on our website for the units you should be doing to fill those broadening and elective requirements: uwastudentguild.com/best-units-guide
