PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Hello all, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all of you on behalf of the International Students’ Service department of the Student Guild. Feeling a little overwhelmed? Fear not, as we will always be here to help and support you through your time at UWA and ensure you have an amazing journey. Here’s a short poem I have created for your reading pleasure, to say how much I love the Guild, and how much you will come to love it too. My love for UWA is so great, my heart melts for The Guild ‘til the dusk of day. The night beats when The Guild’s away, eat, talk ‘til day’s dawn. The Guild beauty is great, Wondering mind ‘til The Guild sees, walking is all I do, While waiting for the moment, for The Guild to say “I do.” Beautiful… With love, Sean Farrell Matjeraie International Students’ Service Director

EDITORS MESSAGE Welcome to the Lighthouse Magazine! Greetings everyone! Firstly, to all returning international students, welcome back and hope you had an amazing break. I indeed had a great one travelling and of course eating to my heart’s content. After all, nothing beats the good old home cooked food right? To our new friends joining us this year, congratulations on making it to UWA! You’ve certainly chosen to embark on a new adventure and hopefully, Lighthouse can help serve as a guiding light throughout your amazing new journey. In this first issue of Lighthouse 2015, we have an information packed line up that we hope would be useful in helping you to settle into UWA. For those of you who are looking for some procrastination material before the lecture wave hits you, don’t forget to check out the fun DIY material included as well! Last but definitely not the least, I would like to say a very big thank you to my fellow committee members and the UWA Guild design team for their contributions and ideas. Hopefully you would enjoy this issue just as much or even more than I did :) Once again welcome back and all the best for the upcoming semester! Sharmini Thiagarajan Lighthouse Editor (2015)

LECTURE CAPTURE SYSTEM LCS would definitely have to be my favorite part of the e-learning system at UWA! Ever wondered how you’re going to get up for that 8am lecture? Have a tutorial at the same time as a lecture and considered getting a clone? Wish you could watch your lectures at the comfort of your own home with some yummy churros? (#churrosareawesome) Fear not, for LCS is here! LCS is an amazing system that records your lectures and publishes it online, enabling viewing at a later period. It is really simple to access LMS as well! Simply log on to the Learning Management System (LMS) and once you’re on your home page, scroll down and look out for the section titled ‘Lecture Capture System’ on the right hand side corner of the page. Click on the link that says ‘Access Lecture Capture Centre’ and this should take you to the LCS page with all your recorded lectures. Although this is an amazing system that we are fortunate enough to enjoy, please do take note that technical glitches are inevitable and LCS may face some hiccups over the semesters. In such instances, your lectures might not get recorded or the sound system might not be working. If this happens, I recommend asking your lecturers if they have a previous years’ recording that you can view or if all else fails, try bribing your friends with some chocolates and I’m sure they would be more than happy to share their notes with you! Also, do take note that LCS records only the lecture presentation (slides and lecturer’s voice). So if you happen to have a lecturer who likes to point at the lecture slides or write down notes on the whiteboards, you’re better off attending your lectures in person. At the end of the day, the good old method of attending lectures

and taking notes is always a safer option. It also gives you the opportunity to meet your lecturers and ask them any questions that you might have. For more information on LCS and venues with LCS facilities, check out http://www.catl.uwa.edu.au/e-learning/LC/LCS

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

VISA REQUIREMENTS Meeting the relevant visa requirements and ensuring that your visa is up to date is a crucial aspect of being an international student. If you’re unsure about any visa conditions or would like to know more about the dos and don’ts while holding a student visa, please visit the Department of Immigration and Border Protection website at http://www.immi.gov.au/students/studentinformation.htm Still can’t find the answers to your questions? Contact the Guild’s Student Assist office or head down to the International Centre and have a chat with one of the friendly staffs and they would be well equipped with assisting you.

OSHC CARD Just like your student visa, it is also a mandatory requirement for all international students to have health coverage for the entire duration of your stay in Australia. OSHC Worldcare Representative will be on Campus at the International Centre (located at the Student Central) from Monday to Friday to help answer your queries during these timings. Consultation hours are: • Monday 0900am to 12.00pm • Tuesday 0900am to 12.00pm • Wednesday 1.00pm to 4.00pm • Thursday 1.00pm to 4.00pm • Friday 1.00pm to 4.00pm Alternatively, for more information you could also check out their website at www.oshcallianzassistance.com.au

MEDICAL CENTRE The staff at the UWA Medical Centre aim to provide convenient, confidential and comprehensive medical care for students at UWA. They provide a full range of services including: • • •

General Practitioner consultations Sexual health and contraceptive advice Travel advice and vaccinations

You can make a medical appointment online at http://www. student.uwa.edu.au/life/health/medical-centre or by phone (6488 2118).

ACTIVITY PAGE: STAR BOX Cut out the box, score, fold and glue together. Fill the box with a treat and fold the flaps to close.

TRANSPORT PUBLIC TRANSPORT Services to UWA are pretty good – nearly 40% of UWA students use public transport to get to and from Uni every day. It’s MUCH cheaper than driving and less stressful than trying to find a parking space. There are several bus stops on Hackett Drive, Mounts Bay Road and Broadway. See SMARTRIDER in the A-Z section for concession fare info. For timetables visit www.transperth.wa.gov.au TRANSPORT MAP See www.transport.uwa.edu.au for a campus map of parking areas, phones, toilets, accessible bays, bicycle racks and motorcycle bays. CYCLING All students should seriously consider cycling to UWA. Save thousands of dollars a year and improve your fitness! There are bike racks across campus and great showers at the UWA Fitness Centre. Join the UWA Bicycle User Group (UWABUG) for discounts at local bike shops and fun activities like the Bike Breakfast. They have lots of useful information for cyclists at www.sponsored.uwa.edu.au/bug. CAR POOLING UWA has a carpooling website to help students and staff find people to share lifts with to and from UWA. So grab some friends and save precious money and time looking for a parking space! Website: www.jayride.com.au/uwa

TAXIS Never risk drink driving – always use public transport or call a taxi! Swan Taxis Website: www.swantaxis.com.au Phone: 13 13 30
Free calls from Visitors’ Centre during business hours Black & White Taxis Phone: 13 10 08 Website: www.bwtaxi.com.au (online bookings available)

DRIVERS LICENSE For those of you who are planning on getting your driver’s license in Perth, check out the Department of Transport’s website at http:// www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/ my-drivers-licence.asp for more information. All the best and remember drinking and driving is a serious offence. Always adhere to the traffic rules and road safety measures while driving.

PROOF OF AGE CARD If you’re new to Perth, a proof of age card might probably be something you’ve never heard of. Some of you might even wonder what use is this card going to be. Well, if you don’t have an Australian driver’s license and don’t enjoy carrying your passport around as a proof of ID, then this card is pretty much for you! This card helps to serve as a form of ID to individuals over the age of 16 who do not have a driver’s license and/or passport. As most places in Perth do not recognize overseas driving licenses or other forms of identification cards (with the exception of passports) as a proof of age/ID it is advisable to apply for this card and carry it with you at all times. More information on the proof of age card and how to go about applying for one can be found at this website, http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/ licensing/photo-card.asp
