Re:
President’s Message
Hello! For those who don’t know me, I am Nisa and I am the President of the International Students Department (ISD) of UWA Guild for 2019. For many international students like myself, campus life has become an integral part of our experience in Perth and I can safely say that college is now our home away from home. What is home? Home is not necessarily the place you were born in or the place where you spent any particular part of your life. It might not even be a place to begin with. Home is where you made your favourite moments; where you felt the most comfort and peace. We are a team full with passionate and committed individuals from different background and what I hope ISD can do this year is to spark a sense of belonging on campus to continue to make UWA a home for international students. It takes a lot of courage to leave your families and friends back home, to learn in a new environment, a new culture and for a lot of us a new language. Take this opportunity and the time you have here in Perth to grow and learn. I have 3 tips for all of you: 1) 2) 3)
Get involved, Here in the Guild we have over 150 clubs that you can take part in. From the Malaysian Society, to the Cars Appreciation Club or my personal favourite, the Harry Potter society (Yes, they do play Quidditch). Find opportunities, take on leadership roles in clubs or in college and volunteer. And lastly, build relationships. No, I’m not promising you a soulmate at the end of 3 years.
There is so much more than just a degree. And make sure you leave UWA with more than just that. Have a wonderful semester ahead, and I’m so excited to meet each and everyone one of your soon. Sincerely,
KHAIRUNNISA (NISA) SHAHRIN PRESIDENT - INTERNATIONAL STUDENT DEPARTMENT Univeristy of Western Australia 35 Stirling Hwy, Crawley WA 6009

Bubble Tea War
It send shivers down my spine to think there was a time that bubble tea (or as our American pals call it, boba???) didn’t exist. It has since taken over campus culture by storm. For the uninitiated, bubble tea, at is simplest, is a tea-based drink, often with milk, sugar and tapioca balls. Since its inception in the 1980s in Taiwan, the drink has since evolved to include many flavours and toppings. With Presotea by Hampden Road, Utopia in the city and the abundance of bubble tea stores around Perth, we wouldn’t be surprised if you’re spoilt for choice! To kick off your bobba journey, we’ve checked out three different spots and three different drinks for you.
Honey Creme Cheese Foam Beauty Berry Tea Aesthetics: 4/5 We love the sea turtles. Honey Creme’s sturdy cups not only make them better to be reused but their covers also encourages us to drink their teas without straws! Taste: 4/5 Cheese? With tea!? Yes you heard it right. But surprisingly enough, it works! The slight saltiness and savory taste of the cheese blends well with the slightly sweeter tea. Toppings: 2/5 Unfortunately, you wouldn’t be able to get any other topping other than the cheese. 10
Utopia Butterfly Pea Tea with Passionfruit and Kumquat Aesthetics: 6/5
This might just be the prettiest Bubble Tea in the market! When lemon or lime juice is added, the drink changes from blue to pinkish purple. Don’t worry, only natural food colouring is used! Taste: 4/5
Presotea Charcoal Roasted Milk Tea
We were initially a little skeptical about the passionfruit and kumquat combination. For those who don’t know, kumquat is a citrus fruit. Think of it as a mini oval-sized tangerine. To our delight, the sweetness of the tea was perfectly balanced by the sourness of the passionfruit and kumquat. Toppings: 4/5
Aesthetics: 3/5 We love the new look of the Presotea cups, which are now printed with its sleek black logo. The cups are now also thinner which slightly improves the grip (makes walking from Hampden a little easier!). We are secretly waiting for the return of the ever-soInstagrammable matte black cups which made its appearance in late 2018.
Nothing beats fresh bubble tea toppings like passionfruit! If you are feeling more adventurous, Utopia has an array of toppings to choose from.
Taste: 4/5 We would definitely recommend this drink to bubble tea-virgins or those who aren’t adventurous enough to try other complicated drinks. This drink is a twist on the typical milk tea coupled with a roasted aftertaste. Big tip: The Charcoal Roasted Milk Tea is one of the few drinks in Presotea that you can order as a hot beverage in Winter! Toppings: 4/5 Similar to Utopia, Presotea’s toppings are one to beat. Our favourites are the egg pudding and panda pearls! 11

Got the Munchies?
Only used the kitchen to boil water for your instant noodles? Maybe felt a little fancy and cracked an egg. We’ve got three recipes for you to spice it up in the kitchen. It might look daunting at first but you’ll get a hang of it. If you really can’t let go of your dried noodle block, we’ve got a special one for you.
Fajitas, and maybe Guac
Served on tortilla wraps, sautéed peppers and onions and succulent boneless skinless chicken breasts cut into thin strips, seasoned with salt, garlic, chilli, paprika, dried oregano, cumin and honestly, anything you want to season it with but please season them. I’m begging you. Serves 6, or 1 if you believe in yourself For fajitas: 700g boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into thin strips 1/2 medium red pepper, julienned 1/2 medium green pepper, julienned 1/2 cup chopped onion 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin 4 green onions, thinly sliced 1/2 teaspoon chilli powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1 1/2 teaspoons salt Tortilla wraps
For guacamole: 3 ripe avocados 1 finely chopped onion 1 lime Salt and chilli powder to taste
Method: For guacamole, use a fork to soften avocados in a bowl. Squeeze lime and mix in onions, salt and chilli. Refrigerate for later use. For fajitas, in a large skillet, sauté peppers and onions in oil until crisp-tender. Remove pepper mixture from heat. In the same skillet, cook chicken over medium-high heat until no longer pink. Return pepper mixture into pan. Add seasonings and stir thoroughly. Serve in tortilla wraps and top with guacamole. TIP: You can also marinate the chicken by adding the seasonings first together with 2 tablespoons oil and lemon juice. Refrigerate for 1-4 hours. Discard marinade and cook chicken as directed.
3-Step Hummus
Serves 1 Ingredients: 400g can chickpeas 2 tablespoon olive oil 1/4 lemon, juiced 2 small chorizo, chopped 2 handfuls chopped kale Salt to taste Method: Warm chickpea in a frying pan in the liquid. Drain and reserve liquid. Add half the chickpeas, 1 tablespoon olive oil, the lemon juice and a splash of the liquid from the chickpeas and blend to a paste. Season with salt. Fry chorizo over low heat until it releases its oil. Continue cooking in medium heat until crisp. Add remaining chickpeas and stir in kale until it wilts. Spoon warm hummus into a bowl and top with the chorizo, chickpeas and kale. Drizzle remaining olive oil. Serve with flatbread. TIP: Cucumber dipped in hummus is bomb dot com.
Beef Stir-fry Ramen Noodle Ramen noodle with beef, stir-fried. Serves 4 (hopefully) Ingredients: 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 large onion, chopped 1 red bell pepper, chopped 1/2 head broccoli, cut 1 large carrot, cut into half moons 500 grams ground beef 1/4 cup soy sauce 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 2 teaspoon sriracha 1 clove garlic, minced 2 packets ramen noodles, seasoning discarded Sliced green onions for garnish
Images not true to measurements in recipe. No food was wasted. I’m too broke not to use them.
Chickpea puree, drizzled with olive oil. Homemade, made from the hands that are your own. And a food processor. Topped with chopped chorizo and kale, both optional.
Method: In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add onions, peppers and broccoli and cook until tender. Add ground beef and cook until no longer pink. Drain fat. Whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, sriracha and garlic. In a medium saucepan, bring water to a boil and cook ramen noodles. Drain. Add cooked noodles to skillet and pour over sauce. Toss until combined. Serve and garnish with green onions. 13

Notes from College Row
College offers an entirely different experience as part of life in university. We checked in with our friends from St Thomas More College to tell us more about the *~wyLd C0lleGe LyF!!~*
Hi! My name is Valeri and I am an international student from Singapore. St. Thomas More College has been home to me for the past 2 years. I am currently in my 3rd year completing my Bachelors in Sport Science, Exercise and Health. Living in “Tommy” as they call it has been an amazing experience. I’ve made many friends from all over the world such as my amazing neighbour, Mattias from Novara, Italy! Being in a foreign country alone can be very daunting. However, the support provided by college that cater to international students ensured a smooth transition.

Spending most of my time in college apart from school, it would be safe to say that my university life would not have been a breeze if not for the friends and memories that I have made in college!

Growing up in a country where inter-generational households are practically a norm, I bear no shame in proclaiming that unlike many of my millennial peers outside of the Asia-Pacific, I was still living under the same roof with my parents up till my 20s. I, like many others, was brought up to assume that there are no expectations for me to move out of my modest middle-class household because we all know that 1) I could never physically part myself from the nest and 2) I’d never strike out on my own (I’M LOOKING AT YOU unaffordable real estate). You can deny it all you want but there is a sense of comfort knowing you are still able to participate in silent feuds with siblings over who will take out the trash or lie in your mother’s embrace and have her patiently lend an ear because no one else is willing to listen to the woes of your failing relationship. As you can see, I’d consider myself to be a person who is typically dependent on the company of others day to day to get by.
16
Eager to take on a new life course at the cusp of turning 22, I made the decision to embark on year of self-discovery by studying abroad, one that would no longer tie me to compromising the colour of the living room couch. Like everything else in life, I had to do my homework on overcoming the restrictive fear and daunting realities of adulting which, according to some, only involved “Crying… or not crying.” While I can attest to this fact to some extent, living without your parents in close proximity can be a transformative experience in the best way possible so if you are terrified yet packing up your belongings while you’re reading this, this one’s for you:
Congrats. You’ve defeated the inner, self-battling waves of indecision and hesitance by making the big leap to live by yourself but your journey is far from over. Sure, you might have been lucky to have found a support system through new acquaintances and caring neighbours who’ll help you settle in but once you’ve shut your door behind you for the first time, what follows is an episodic series of being emotionally overwhelmed by anything and everything that lacks familiarity. You might even break down on your first Skype call with your loved ones back home but fret not—they’ll adore you the same.
You’ve adorned your sanctuary with polaroids and trinkets of your own taste; and the tacky film poster you’ve hung up directly above your bed is beginning to make your new space feel a little more like your room back home. You come to the realisation that with your newly acquired freedom, you are now the ruler of your very own kingdom. Prepare yourself for late nights of pant-less dancing (pizza in hand, no less) on school nights while belting out your favourite 90’s jam without incurring judgements. Unwashed dishes? Impromptu sleepovers? Eating peanut butter straight from the jar? Check, check, check.
Soon enough, the period of jubilation wears off and the only form of social interaction you have is the occasional casual small talk with a neighbour while you trudge down the stairs with two weeks worth of laundry. You skipped one class and suddenly you lost track of the days of the week. It’s easy to reach out for your phone and scroll through social feeds in solitude just to see what your friends are up to but remember not to let the FOMO (fear of missing out, for the uncultured) take control. Perhaps at this point, the wonder of independent-living that you’ve often romanticised has long sailed. There’s no better way to satiate this natural yearn for connection by stepping out of your empty apartment and making the effort to engage in actual human interaction. After all, the real world promises endless distractions like forcing you to decide if the overpriced sandwich at your local deli is worth splurging on.
Months pass and you’ve finally accomplished a routine for yourself that does not only involve moping around and leaving cookie crumbs on your duvet. In between losing yourself for hours in the episodes of a new binge-worthy series on Netflix, you’ve also proudly rediscovered the ancient art of reading after you stumbled upon a quaint secondhand bookstore on your last grocery run. There’ll be days when you find yourself sprawled across the floor, drowned in your own thoughts of isolation but this doesn’t stop you from springing back up to get your shit together. So what if there isn’t a shoulder nearby to cry on? Don’t try so hard to beat the loneliness—embrace it and you’ll find yourself getting to know someone you never really gave a chance: you.
