united for change

Together we accomplish so much more We are at an unprecedented moment as a community. And United Way is no exception to that. Thanks to the support of our generous community members over the past four years, United Way has undergone a renaissance—a time of great revival, where we have steadily increased our goals and exceeded them; where we have strengthened our impact and built community-wide coalitions. Our community has gone from handwringing to hope, and that spirit grows stronger every day. However, many people are not yet reaping the benefits of our community’s growing good fortune. In fact, an alarming 50% of children in Buffalo live below the poverty level. So, there is still a great deal of work to be done for all of our friends and neighbors to become strong, self-sufficient, independent and healthy. And United Way is focused on improving the well-being of our community.

Improving quality of life In 2013, we invested nearly $4.6M in 90 Education, Financial Stability, and Health & Wellness programs at local nonprofits, American Red Cross Disaster Relief Services, Labor Emergency Services, and 2-1-1 WNY Information & Referral Services. The impact has been profound. From the newly launched Children’s Center for Success to the Baby Café breastfeeding support centers for moms and their infants, and the 5,400 volunteers who gave 27,000 hours of service, we have seen the difference United Way can make in our community.

igniting hope in Erie County United Way invests millions of dollars into nonprofit programs that make our community stronger by helping people build knowledge, skills, independence, self-sufficiency and well-being.

Your contributions help strengthen people in need Thanks to the generosity of our compassionate community, United Way invested $4.6M into 90 programs and services across 54 nonprofit agencies in Erie County. The programs address the most critical needs in Education, Financial Stability, and Health & Wellness, as well as provide access to health and human services, and ensure sound disaster and emergency relief services. These local programs create better opportunities for our children to achieve academic and personal success, help families build a solid financial future, and promote healthy behavior and choices.

What this means for our community When we help children build the skills necessary to enter kindergarten and give school-aged children the academic, social and emotional support to build on that sound educational foundation, we set them on the path to a successful life. When we give people access to job and vocational training so they can provide for their loved ones, or teach families how to create a budget and save for a home or car, we empower them to be self-sufficient, which builds stability in our community. Furthermore, helping people of all ages get access to health and human services promotes healthier behavior and choices that lead to a thriving community—such as providing seniors transportation to medical appointments and grocery stores, helping connect pregnant women with prenatal care, or ensuring that those in unhealthy or abusive relationships get the physical, emotional, social or legal support they need.

Focusing on the most pressing issues United Way conducted a Community Needs Assessment that measured the most critical areas of need in Erie County. This data has informed our rigorous and thoughtful funding process, resulting in the most responsible, effective and measurable method of delivering services to people in need. In the area of Education, we invest in programs that focus on early learning and development, academic performance and enrichment, and career and college readiness. In Financial Stability, we focus on income stabilization, employment and workforce development, and asset building and financial education. And, in Health & Wellness, we focus on healthy behavior and choices and access to needed services. Thousands of people in Erie County benefitted from United Way funded programs last year. The positive impact resulting from the significant investments that United Way makes in our community can be measured in a number of ways—from increases in grade point averages to new jobs to healthier newborns, and more.

Collaborating for the common good United Way brings many stakeholders together to address the community’s most critical needs. The collective power of this collaboration is far greater than one organization could accomplish alone.

100+ agencies solving issues together One of the most effective ways we work to accomplish our mission of bringing people, organizations and resources together to improve community well-being is through our collaborative programs and initiatives. When we share expertise, best practices and resources with organizations throughout Erie County, and work closely with one another to tackle the big issues, we create positive momentum that results in lasting change.

Erie/Niagara Birth to 8 Coalition The United Way led Erie/Niagara Birth to 8 Coalition brings 60 organizations together to help children succeed in school and life. They have identified key issues affecting children and families—such as healthy pregnancies/full-term births, safe environments, school-readiness, access to services, and social-emotional supports—and they work to improve outcomes in those areas.

80% of brain development occurs before age 5 Creating positive change in early education In 2013, United Way piloted the Children’s Center for Success—an innovative daycare and parent engagement model that helps parents and staff effectively interact with children with challenging behaviors. It is the first daycare of its kind in Erie County to utilize specialized training and services with a positive, progress-related approach to bringing out the best in every child, even if they have not done well in other daycare or preschool environments. Services, support and training are provided to teachers, caregivers and parents to help ensure the progress of each child.

Additional collaborations in Education United Way also works closely with community agencies on collaborations such as Closing the Gap in Student Performance, which works to improve academic success of students in Buffalo Public Schools by addressing non-academic barriers to learning—and The Afterschool Network of Western New York, which works to strengthen the out-of-school-time community through advocacy, collaboration and education.

The CASH coalition is made up of 60 organizations that work to improve the financial health of hardworking families. Through the help of trained volunteers who serve as financial coaches, they focus on increasing dollars coming into low- to moderate-income households from tax refunds, credits such as EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit), and other income supports. Through financial education and other initiatives, CASH works to increase awareness of local asset-building and employment opportunities for

low-income households, particularly within special populations, such as refugees, persons with disabilities, and veterans.

CASH Poverty Simulation CASH facilitates interactive poverty simulations for those interested in understanding the day-to-day realities for people living in poverty. Since 2008, 80 simulations have been hosted for 70 groups, companies, agencies and educational institutions. Participants assume various roles within different families facing poverty. They provide for basic necessities and shelter over the course of four 15-minute "weeks." During this "month," family members seek assistance from a variety of human services and other organizations.

80 poverty simulations have been hosted for 70 groups

“ This experience helped to bring a greater understanding of actual problems faced by lowincome families and it helped me recognize the difficult day-to-day decisions that must be made. The poverty simulation confirmed my values and beliefs in helping those less fortunate. — Poverty simulation participant

Poverty Coalition United Way is also a partner in a Poverty Coalition that meets regularly and is working to educate the public on the issue and solutions, advocate for effective strategies, and engage the community in the fight against poverty.

issues such as obesity, poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyles, and healthy pregnancies and babies.

Training health professionals The coalition works to strengthen the health promotion field through conferences and training such as the Infant Nutrition Practices: Disparity Starts at Birth conference, attended by nearly 200 professionals. They also offer Certified Lactation Counseling training and play an instrumental role in the New York State Department of Health Breastfeeding-Friendly Learning Collaborative.

Nearly 30% of adults and more than 16% of children in Erie County are obese Resources & evidence-based programming In an effort to raise awareness, the Healthy Start, Healthy Future for All Coalition developed The Maternal-Infant Resource Guide for information on how to access prenatal, postnatal and pediatric care; and The Last Straw board game, which teaches health professionals how social determinants impact health. Their program initiatives include local Baby Cafés—community supported drop-in centers that provide free, skilled lactation care to new mothers; and two physician toolkits: An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound—to assist in delivering evidence-based obesity education messages to parents; and Healthy You x2, which promotes

Second Act United Way partners with Erie County Departments of Mental Health and Senior Services to improve the quality of life for older people, age 60+, in Buffalo and Erie County through the Second Act coalition. The coalition works to maximize independence for the frail and disabled, optimize physical and mental health and well-being, address basic needs, and promote social and civic engagement.

Volunteering

5,300+ come together to make a difference The immense scope of United Way’s volunteer efforts ranges from the expertise and leadership of our dedicated Board of Directors and Advisory Council to the diligent and tireless commitment of our campaign coordinators and community impact volunteers. There are also thousands of individuals and corporate volunteers who contribute hours of hard work and energy to carry out our mission at events and initiatives such as Day of Caring, Family Volunteer Day, Business Meets Community, and the Community Baby Shower.

“ United Way would not be able to create lasting change in Erie County without the dedication and passion of our volunteers. As ambassadors of action, they empower our community with their talent and energy.” —M ichael Weiner, President & CEO

Our community reaps the benefits United Way volunteers contribute thousands of hours of service to support programs that make our community stronger. Their service amounts to significant savings in operational costs for United Way as well as for our partner agencies, and they provide a critical source of support for agencies that do not have the resources to accomplish their goals without the help of volunteers.

The largest single-day volunteer effort in Erie County United Way Day of Caring brought 3,600 volunteers together to complete 181 projects that helped improve our community at United Way’s 22nd Annual Day of Caring on August 20, 2014. Projects included gardening, cleaning, landscaping, painting, maintenance and organizing. Volunteers also served lunch to seniors, mentored young people or chaperoned field trips.

Rewrite someone’s Story. Marcus J., Cheektowaga, NY When I was a sophomore in high school, I was failing classes, skipping school, and I was totally broke. Then my counselor had me sign up for a work-scholarship program that helps kids get a part-time job and get ready for college. They found me a job at Wegmans where I was trained to be a cashier. I learned how to deal with customers and how to look and act professional in the workplace. The program also helped me focus on staying in school and getting my grades up. I worked really hard and got on the high honor roll. I was even on Channel 7 News at graduation. Now I’m in college on a full scholarship and I hope to get a good job when I graduate. donors

United way would not exist without your support More than 50,000 people, companies and organizations contributed to United Way in 2013. Thanks to their generosity, people in Erie County will have access to programs and initiatives that address critical needs and strengthen our community. United Way donors and sponsors play an important role in the success of our mission by supporting local programs that address the most pressing needs in Education, Financial Stability, and Health & Wellness, as well as volunteering, nonprofit training, and community-wide collaborations. Whether a company or individual participates in the workplace campaign, provides a grant or corporate gift, sponsors an event, donates in-kind gifts, or supports our Endowment & Planned Giving program, United Way is deeply grateful for the compassion and generosity that enables us to focus on our mission every day.

Leading by example At the heart of every significant human effort are inspirational leaders who set the standard in their giving and in their commitment to a better future for all. They care deeply about enacting change in the community, have the motivation and means to make the community stronger, and inspire others to follow in their path. Each year, the generous and distinguished members of United Way’s Tocqueville Society have stepped forward to demonstrate extraordinary commitment to positive change in Buffalo and Erie County. In 2013, 94 Tocqueville members contributed more than $1.7 million to the United Way Campaign.

Gifts of lasting impact The 4,000+ members of United Way’s Leadership Society each contribute generous gifts of $500 or more. In addition, the nearly 1,800 members of the Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) sponsor events and initiatives such as 100 Women Who Care, at which $10,000 was raised and awarded to Cradle Beach after a vote by WLC members in attendance.

Loyal Contributors Not only have many of our donors contributed generously to the 2013 Campaign, but numerous individuals and families have been contributing for 10 or more consecutive years, and some as many as 50+ years. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to each one of them for their continuous support and loyalty. For more information, please contact Gayle Barton, Director of Major Gifts, at 887-2750 or gayle.barton@uwbec.org.

endowment & planned giving

Fortifying United Way for the future The United Way of Buffalo & Erie County has launched an effort to increase its endowment to $20 million over the next 10 years through direct gifts and planned giving. To date, we have raised $4.7M toward that goal. United Way’s endowment will ensure that we can continue to identify

costs, allowing our skilled staff and extensive network of volunteers to concentrate on addressing the community’s most pressing issues.

“ The work of the United Way is essential to our community, and we want to ensure that work is able to continue into the future. The United Way does an excellent job of identifying needs, properly allocating resources and ensuring that there are measurable outcomes.” —Paulette M. Crooke & Michael Toner

Supporting effective instruments for change The endowment will preserve and enhance the United Way’s capacity to objectively measure and support the most effective programs in our community. For example, our Community Needs Assessment (available at uwbec.org/needsassessment) provides our leadership with valuable and accurate information that enhances United Way’s ability to direct resources to the initiatives that will have the greatest positive long-term impact. Your gift to the United Way endowment is an effective and powerful way to show your leadership in our community, as it translates gifts of time and money into positive social change for future generations.

Cradle Beach Awarded $10,000 grant The United Way Women’s Leadership Council held their first 100 Women Who Care event on July 10, 2014, where they invited 100 women who each agreed to a $100 donation for the event. The participants nominated charities currently funded by United Way to be considered for the $10,000 award, and four random ballots were selected to present their case that evening. After the presentations, the women voted to award Cradle Beach the $10,000 grant. The funding will help support year-round programming at Cradle Beach’s camp in Derby, which serves the needs of nearly 1,100 disabled or economically disadvantaged children annually.

Rewrite someone’s Story. Daniella S., North Buffalo, NY Nine years ago, I was unemployed, had terrible credit and no savings, and was moving from place to place just trying to get by. As a single mother of three, I needed help finding a job and learning how to manage my finances so that I could provide a stable life for my children. Thanks to a United Way program that helps low-income families learn money-management and job-search skills, I found a job in healthcare and learned how to budget and save money to buy a home. The program matched my savings, and first-time homebuyer classes helped me understand homeownership. I worked hard at my job, got promoted, and became a proud homeowner last summer. Thank you for rewriting my story. Source: Belmont Housing Resources for WNY, Comprehensive Housing Counseling—a United Way funded program. Names and images have been changed for confidentiality.
