The February Glimmer ebruary is the month when we begin to catch a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel with the days getting longer little by little. And with the holiday season behind us you may find yourself thinking beyond your day to day concerns and considering ways you might make a difference in the world around you. Several events this month are geared to just that, starting with the Public Service & Non-Profit Opportunities Fair (story at right) and a panel on corporate responsibility that features representatives from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Starbucks, Microsoft and more. The Peace Corps also holds an information session this month, and be sure to check out the “myStory” column featuring UW Peace Corps representative Tom Edwardsen on the back side of this calendar.

myStory: Tom Edwardsen, Grad Student and Peace Corp Coordinator Tom Edwardsen keeps himself so busy he may not actually know the definition of the word “bored.” He has worked on a farm, in a shipyard, at a ski resort and at an Alaskan fishery. He also spent 27 months serving for the Peace Corps in Azerbaijan, a small country north of Iran on the Caspian Sea, working with a micro-finance bank to implement new and innovative strategies to create a higher volume of inexpensive loans in the community. No sweat, right?
After learning in his junior year that his grades were marginally too low to get him into the fiercely competitive UW Business School, Edwardsen finished his degree at UW Bothell and is now a graduate student in the Evans School of Public Administration. His extensive manual labor work during college introduced him to a world where unimaginably hard work yields unbelievably little
job security. Edwardsen was inspired to take action in the public sector. He strongly believes in the idea of a better America and in strengthening the American government in order to better aid the disenfranchised. Edwardsen is on the cutting edge of an emerging trend toward corporate responsibility, and the importance of what is being called the “triple bottom line” — financial, societal and environmental success. Although a business degree could earn him big bucks in the corporate world, Edwardsen rolled his eyes at the mention of it. “I am uninterested in a lucrative career if it means finding meaning in life only after I clock out,” he said. Instead, he hopes to put his education and skills to work in the federal government. Edwardsen’s time in the Peace Corps gave him real-world business experience, taught him the local language and made him “incredibly comfortable with high-stress situations.” Undaunted when outside his comfort zone, Edwardsen embraces the unknown. “Yeah, those kinds of situations have the power to scare you but they also make you more patient, more observant and more

thoughtful,” Edwardsen said. As if moving halfway around the world, speaking a foreign language and working long, exhausting days weren’t enough, Edwardsen also facilitated an English Club in which he coached Azerbaijani citizens on their English grammar and vocabulary and led a typing lesson for small groups of students, helping to further the technological savvy of a young generation. He also coached a softball team of 15-year-olds to a National Championship title. In August of 2007, days after returning from Azerbaijan, Edwardsen began his graduate program at UW and currently works as the University’s Peace Corps representative in the UW Career Center. Edwardsen is making incredible strides in outreach and recruitment for the Seattle Peace Corps offices and, in fact, received a record number of applications for any one month in November 2007.
