myStory: Mary Berry, 2007 Graduate How does international travel, serving as a volunteer, and majoring in International Studies lead you to a rewarding career path? Marie Berry can answer that question. In fact, her story is a wonderful example of how one’s college experience -both in and outside the classroom -- shapes us in unexpected ways and leads us down paths that may profoundly impact our future. Marie’s experience unfolded when she transferred to the UW’s Jackson School of International Studies to study issues related to genocide. Her classes and professors proved to be life-changing, leading her to volunteer work and international travel, including a trip to Rwanda with Global Youth Connect,
a human rights organization that pairs delegates from the United States with Rwandan delegates. There, she met young people orphaned by both the Rwandan genocide and the African AIDS epidemic, and heard personal stories of survival from those with vivid memories and severe post-traumatic stress disorder. The time, she says, was an “incredibly intense and extremely rewarding… learning experience.” As a senior at the UW, Marie continued to add to her slate of hands-on experience joining the Carlson Center Civic Fellows, a fellowship program with an augmented service learning section. Her participation stemmed from the desire “to fuse knowledge, experience, and leadership together.” Save Darfur Washington State (SDWS) is one of the organizations that captured her heart and volunteer efforts. She participated in educational outreach, public speaking

events, and letter-writing campaigns.
Marie graduated from the UW in June 2007. Her passion for international studies, travel to Rwanda and volunteer work through the Carlson Center Civic Fellows resulted in an educational experience that served as a springboard to her current position as the Speakers Bureau Coordinator for the Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center in Seattle.
By following her interests, strengths and talents, and acting on them in a variety of ways throughout her college career, it’s hardly a surprise that Marie has found satisfying work and a future bright with possibilities. We hope stories like Marie’s encourage you to do the same. Do you have a story to tell about a recent success? Let us know. Email it to mystory@u.washington. edu today! You could be featured here next month.
