Purpose of the role
UWCSEA East has a vacancy for the 2021/2022 school year for a Principal of Middle School. The Middle School Principal is the pedagogical and organisational leader of the Middle School. The Middle School Principal, working with the members of the Middle School Team, is responsible to the Head of Campus for the learning programme within the Middle School. As such, the Middle School Principal has responsibility for the quality of the Middle School’s educational programmes and the professional practice of its personnel. The Middle School Principal will also work as a member of the East Campus Leadership Team to ensure unity of purpose within the Campus, and on the College-wide Learning Leadership Team to ensure connection across campuses.
Key responsibilities
Leading Learning
• Drives and displays innovative approaches to curriculum planning where required. • Ensure the overall wellbeing of Middle School students across all five elements of our Learning Programme.
• Works with the Middle School Vice Principal (Curriculum) to ensure that a challenging and coherent curriculum is offered to Middle School students. • Works with the Middle School Vice Principal (Pastoral) to ensure that the pastoral curriculum is effectively delivered and to ensure that a caring and nurturing atmosphere exists in the Middle School. • Ensure that the College values are firmly embedded and opportunities are taken to reinforce them through lessons and assemblies.
Leading teams
• Sets clear boundaries and expectations providing freedom for teams to work effectively. • Sets and implements a tone conducive to effective communication. • Ensure that staff model the College values. • Maintains an awareness of the needs of all staff under their care, providing opportunities to listen to, and act on concerns while providing a caring and professional atmosphere that allows staff to perform to the best of their ability and be happy at work. • Works in conjunction with the Head of Campus and Human Resources to recruit teachers. • Oversees and participating in the development of teaching and support staff. • Ensure individual teachers contribute generously to the programmes of activities, expeditions and performances.
Leading Self and Others
• Demonstrates effective and sympathetic approaches to performance management and professional development. • Engages all members of the community. • Coaches individuals within the Middle School team and is alert to needs. • Leads by influence rather than authority where possible. • Fosters an environment where creativity flourishes.
Strategic leadership
• Establishes strategic priorities for the Middle School. • Contributes to formulation of the Strategic Plan for the Campus and the College. • Articulates policy, purpose and priorities to the community and externally.
Operational leadership
• Displays strong organizational and operational leadership. • Allocates resources fairly and effectively within given financial constraints. • Ensure that all members of the community are informed and proactive with regard to Child Protection and
Safeguarding practices. • Ensure that relationships between parents and the school are vibrant and positive, through regular communication to ensure that they are well informed, involved, valued members of the community.
