AN EDUCATION LIMITED TO A LECTURE HALL? THAT WASN'T FOR LARRY Choosing where you want to spend the next three years of your life – or longer – isn’t easy. So you need an opinion you can trust. Having studied for a BA in Banking and Finance, Larry now has a career that pushes him every day. And he’s ready to meet those challenges head on. “I chose UWE Bristol because the course covered many different aspects of finance. It wasn’t limited to theories that would be out-dated when applied in the real world. It also included the option of a year abroad or a 40-week industrial placement, just the practical experience I was looking for. I did a placement in my third year, which helped me to connect the dots between studying and working. I believe it gave me an advantage after university. I knew what to expect within the industry. I also made good use of the career services at UWE Bristol.

Thanks to their personalised advice, I felt better prepared when opportunities presented themselves. Everyone wants the ‘student experience’ – one that you’ll remember forever. That’s why it’s important that the university you choose has spaces for students to meet and collaborate. UWE Bristol has the sports centre and students’ union. BROOKE CAN FACE ANY ARGUMENT. BRING IT ON “The course has been really interesting and the staff are always on hand to answer questions, they give detailed feedback and provide an extensive range of sources to support their lectures. I had the chance to explore different areas of law and identify which area I wanted to specialise in. When I started my degree, I had a strong interest in criminal law and hoped to pursue that when I graduated. But, working in civil/familial law through the Pro Bono Unit and commercial law in my modules, helped me recognise that I want to pursue a commercial or corporate career in law. There’s a variety of assessment strategies here and my confidence, presentation and communication skills, and legal reasoning have all benefited from it. Being able to communicate and present arguments clearly is essential in the legal industry, and my course at UWE Bristol has really helped me develop these skills. The practical experience that you

gain on and through the course is invaluable. I have been involved in the Pro Bono Unit here at UWE Bristol, and for the past two years I’ve been the student lead. Chairing meetings and organising events meant that I could develop my leadership skills, as well as my teamwork. I have also had the opportunity to draft legal documents and lead a project – two skills which will be invaluable in my career. The pro bono work has been an amazing experience. It looks great on my CV and it’s allowed me to develop as a person. I’ve also been involved in the Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) and student ambassador schemes, and they have really helped me develop my confidence and leadership skills – and doing these things alongside my studies has helped me improve my time management and organisation.” Brooke LLB(Hons) Law

THE FUTURE OF RESEARCH – IT’S ABOUT MORE THAN BOOKS Ciara is studying Biomedical Science and hopes to go into research. It’s a field that’s changing all the time, but the practical approach taken at UWE Bristol is standing her in good stead. When she lands her first interview, she won’t just have an understanding of the technologies used by the industry – she’ll have used them herself. “I’d always wanted to study science, but I chose UWE Bristol because the course was so hands-on. You get to experience what you hear about in the lectures – to put theory into practice. The equipment we use in the university lab is the same equipment that’s used in the real world of research, so it’s preparing me for my future career – I’ll know what to do and exactly how it works. I love Bristol. It’s just the right size and there’s always stuff going on. I’ve tried kickboxing and I’ve volunteered at a school – setting up mini science experiments. I found out

about volunteering at a UWE Bristol employment fair, it opened doors for me and enabled me to get experience outside of my course. I’m hoping to do a placement in my third year – I’m really looking forward to networking and meeting people who are currently working in research. It will help me to decide what I actually want to do, and where I want to work in the future. Whatever I choose to do, my time at UWE Bristol has improved my skills in so many ways. I’ve learned how to work in a team. I’ve been introduced to lots of different people, practised working with different personalities, and developed my leadership skills too. I’m proud to say that I stood up and presented a case study to a group – something I’ve never been good at. YOUR CAMPUSES Frenchay is our main campus, just four miles outside the city centre. It’s home to our £55 million, world-class Business and Law building, and the £16.5 million West of England University Enterprise Zone (UEZ), which is one of only four in the country. As part of the UEZ, FutureSpace is a dynamic new workspace – with lab, workshops and offices – for innovative start-ups and SMEs specialising in science and high-tech areas.

Glenside is in the Fishponds area of the city. It’s home to most of our allied health, nursing and midwifery students.

City Campus is home to UWE Bristol’s creative and cultural industry courses. A powerhouse of creativity, City Campus spans the city and is made up of Bower Ashton, Spike Island, Arnolfini and Watershed.

Gloucester is where you’ll find some of our adult nursing and mental health nursing students. We’re in the Alexandra Warehouse at Gloucester Docks, an historic listed building. It's been fully refurbished and now features a purpose-built skills and simulation suite.

CREATIVE TECHNOLOGIES Enabling creativity through technology Creative Technologies are evolving into one of the most exciting and challenging areas of academic study. The cross-disciplinary interaction between digital technologies, such as computing, and the more traditional arts and humanities subjects, allows our students to explore both scientific and artistic thinking. Our courses are challenging, yet rewarding, and our graduates are in demand. Some have secured coveted positions within organisations including the BBC, Dyson, Kinneir Dufort, Rockstar North and Hackenbacker sound studio, or have set up their own successful businesses. We work hard to maintain partnerships within the sector to ensure placement and internship opportunities are available. Employers contribute to course content and provide a valuable insight into industry. Creative Technologies

You’ll be inspired by our first-class facilities designed to simulate industry and promote creativity. We’ve state-of-the-art equipment including our Product Design Workshop equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters and CNC routers and you’ll have access to virtual reality development software, computer-aided design (CAD) studios, music studios and purpose-built Mac and PC labs. My advice to anyone researching degree choices is that choosing the right course at the right university is only part of the story. What really matters is applying yourself from the start. No matter how much help you get with writing a CV, you still need good things to put in it. I did my third-year placement with Babcock, which led to me being offered a graduate training scheme place. I really liked doing engineering and enjoyed being in a working environment. I’ve always liked the military and the Royal Navy in particular, which is why I know that a career in naval defence engineering is for me. When you’re 17 and applying to university you don’t really know what’s out there, but going on placement gives you a real taste. In addition to classroom-based work, we have first-class facilities that simulate real-world healthcare at both of our campuses. At Glenside, you’ll practise in our multi-million pound simulation suites, replica wards, sensory suite and consultation rooms. It’s also home to one of the best health and social care libraries in England. And in Gloucester, you’ll use our purpose-built skills and simulation suite. THE APPLICATION PROCESS Making your application Check the entry requirements Once you’ve fully researched the courses we have on offer at uwe.ac.uk/ courses and if you decide to make an application, please check you meet, or are working towards, the appropriate entry requirements for your chosen course. In addition to the specific requirements outlined on individual course pages, you should be aware of our general information on entry requirements uwe.ac.uk/ugapply Applications for full-time study Apply online through UCAS for entry onto all degrees including foundation degrees and those with foundation years. You need to go through UCAS even if you’re applying for the second or third year of a course. If you’re not currently studying at school or college you should still apply through UCAS. Your referee can be your manager or employer. You’ll be guided through the straightforward online application process at ucas.com. If you require further advice, contact your teachers, career advisers, the National Careers Service or British Council offices. Some of our courses are highly competitive and are therefore unlikely to consider late applications. You should ensure wherever possible you apply prior to the 15 January UCAS deadline. We are of course happy to consider applications submitted after the January deadline for courses which have vacancies. Courses without vacancies will be highlighted on our website. Applications for part-time study Applications for all part-time undergraduate courses are made directly to us or our local study partners. Visit the course pages on uwe.ac.uk/courses, have a look at the course you are interested in and follow the instructions to apply. International student applications As well as applying through UCAS, international students can apply through one of our overseas representatives. See uwe.ac.uk/ international for contact details of our representatives in your home country. This service is free. Deferred entry In most cases we’re happy to accept applications from students wanting to take a gap year. But there are some courses which don’t accept applications for deferred entry. This is made clear online on the relevant course pages uwe.ac.uk/courses. If you decide after you’ve applied you want to defer, you’ll need to contact our Admissions Team for advice. Courses subject to approval If the degree you’re interested in is marked ‘†Subject to final UWE Bristol approval’, applications should still be made in the normal way. The website information will be kept up-to-date regarding the approval status of a programme uwe.ac.uk/courses. Applicants holding an offer on such a programme will be notified of changes through their UWE Welcome website.

Advanced entry If you’ve already obtained a qualification in, or can demonstrate you have studied relevant subjects at a level equivalent to Higher Education, you may be considered for exemption from part of the course. Before we make you an offer, we’ll need full details of the qualification (including units or modules) and your marks, which you can give us by uploading your transcript to your UWE Welcome website once you’ve applied. Considering your application As soon as we receive your application we’ll email you login details for your personal UWE Welcome website. This gives you access to track your application. We’ll get in touch with you via this website throughout the application process, automatically updating it as soon as anything changes. If you’ve applied for more than one of our courses, your site will show details and communications about them all. We’ll encourage you to check this site regularly and to set admissions@uwe.ac.uk as a ‘trusted’ email source to ensure useful updates are not missed. We’ll carefully consider your application and aim to notify you of an update within 14 days. Typical communications are: • I f we’re able to make you an offer this will be updated on UCAS and your UWE Welcome website. We make offers based on the UCAS tariff, full details of which can be found on the UCAS website ucas.com. Once we have made an offer, you’ll be sent lots of useful information regarding your course and relevant University policies. • W e may require further information from you in order to make a decision on your application. This will be requested by email and through your UWE Welcome website. • F or some courses you may be sent an invitation to attend an interview/ selection event. This will be through your UWE Welcome website and contains all the information you’ll

need to prepare for the day. Please note information concerning your interview will only be viewable on your UWE Welcome website. UCAS will not be updated to reflect the fact you are invited to interview. • S ome courses require you to submit a portfolio of work. This will be requested by means of an e-portfolio facility within your UWE Welcome website. To enable us to consider your application in a timely manner, you should ensure your UCAS application is as detailed as possible.

What happens next? If your course offers an Applicant Day you’ll receive a personal invitation through your UWE Welcome website shortly after you’ve received your offer. Building on the Open Day experience, these events give you the chance to explore your chosen course in much more depth. In many cases we try to run more than one Applicant Day per course. If you decide to firmly accept our offer, you’ll be sent details to apply for our accommodation options. This will normally be from about March or April. Those applicants who choose UWE Bristol as their UCAS insurance choice will not be eligible to apply for accommodation at this time. Your course may require occupational health clearance and a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to be provided. Details of how to complete these will be sent to you, if applicable, normally from early May onwards. The right to cancel Should you accept an offer to study with us, you have the right to cancel your place within 14 days of acceptance of the offer. To exercise the right to cancel you may use the form at uwe.ac.uk/ ugapply which can be found under the section ‘Offers and confirmation’. Alternatively you can send a clear statement of the decision to withdraw to our Admissions Team by email or letter within the 14 day cancellation period. Keeping in touch We’ll continue to send you useful information from when you apply to when you start your course. This may include reminders on when to apply for student finance as well as detailed joining instructions which we send out in August. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS UCAS tariff points We make our offers using UCAS tariff points. We accept points from all qualifications in the UCAS tariff. This means you can include points from a variety of qualifications, including (but not limited to): A and AS Levels (including General Studies and Critical Thinking); BTEC; Music and Drama; Welsh Baccalaureate; International Baccalaureate; CoPE (Certificate of Professional Effectiveness). On page 130–131 are some of the more common qualifications in the UCAS tariff. This table is not exhaustive. Please see the UCAS website ucas.com for the complete list.

International qualifications We accept a wide range of international qualifications from all over the world. You will find full details on our website uwe.ac.uk/mycountry

What are our minimum entry requirements? For an honours degree course without an integrated foundation year, you normally need two A Levels, or the equivalent, such as a BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma, International Baccalaureate, or Access to Higher Education Diploma. For an honours degree course with an integrated foundation year, you would normally need one A level or equivalent. Entry Requirements

Students who achieve the UCAS tariff points required (and have passed an English Language qualification) have almost always gained qualifications which meet our minimum entry requirements. However, if you have taken a number of other qualifications, (such as AS Levels or Music and Drama qualifications), you should contact us for advice.

Required subjects For some courses, we specify subjects and grades you must achieve. This is usually because you need to have reached a certain standard in a subject in order to succeed on the degree course. Subjects may be required at GCSE, or at A Level, Extended Diploma, IB, or equivalent. Some courses may offer a foundation year as an alternative entry point. It is really important you check you will have the required subjects for your course and contact us (or enquire at an Open Day) if you are unsure.

English Language and Maths We require an English Language qualification for all courses. We accept GCSE English Language grade C (or grade 4 in the new GCSE grading system), or IELTS 6.0 (International English Language Test) with no less than 5.5 in any one element. Note: we require IELTS 7.0 for Health and Social Care courses. The minimum for each element varies depending on the course. For details, please see our courses page uwe.ac.uk/courses GCSE Maths and/or Science grade C (or grade 4 in the new GCSE grading system) is required for many of our

courses. Please note: the following qualifications are not sufficient alternatives to GCSE Maths and English Language at grade C or above: Level 2 Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number; Level 2 Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy; and Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English. Although these Level 2 qualifications are at the same level as GCSE Grades A–C within the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF), they do not cover the full breadth of knowledge demanded by GCSEs. Therefore, Key Skills and Certificates in Adult Numeracy or Literacy must be Level 3, or above, for us to accept them as alternatives to GCSEs grade C and above. Please contact us if you are unsure.

Access courses An Access to Higher Education Diploma is often the best route for adults without the academic qualifications normally required, but whose life and work experience has given them a strong motivation to go to university. We’ll consider applications for all our courses from those who are taking or have passed a QAA-recognised Access to Higher Education Diploma, or Adult Learners Credit Framework Progression to Higher Education Certificate. For courses which have ‘required subjects’ you normally have to include these subjects within your Access course. These specific requirements, including any grade requirements, are detailed on our course pages uwe.ac.uk/courses

You’ll find entry requirements for each course on our website. We’ve made them as straightforward as possible – and we explain below the different ways you can gain a place on the course of your choice.

Integrated foundation year options We offer a number of courses which include a foundation level entry year for those who need an additional year to gain the required subject knowledge before starting their chosen degree. The best way to explore these is to come to an Open Day, or you can contact us for advice.

Heading Higher Passport (HHP) Plus HHP Plus is a widening participation scheme bringing together enrichment programmes taught in local schools and colleges in partnership with UWE Bristol. We provide a range of experiences and activities, which have the potential to raise aspirations and increase awareness of the opportunities available in Higher Education. The aim is to support learners in decisions about their future. To find out more uwe.ac.uk/schoolsandcolleges

Interviews, auditions and portfolio reviews For some courses, we may ask you to attend a selection event such as an interview, audition or portfolio review as part of the admissions process. The individual course listings will tell you if this is a requirement in your chosen course. Typically: • C reative industries – applicants bring examples of their creative work (their ‘portfolio’) which they discuss with course tutors.

• Drama and acting – applicants come for an audition and discussion with course tutors. • I nitial teacher training and health and social care – applicants attend a selection event which will involve undertaking a test and having an interview with course tutors.

Experience – but not the usual entry requirements We can sometimes accept applicants onto a course who do not have the usual entry requirements, but who have substantial experience (usually a period of years) in a field closely related to the course. We need to be sure you are adequately prepared for the academic methods of teaching and assessment you will encounter on your course. Sometimes we will recommend you do an Access course or offer you a degree with an integrated foundation year instead.

How much are the tuition fees?

If you’re living away from home while you study, you’ll need to cover costs such as accommodation, travel, bills and food. We’ve estimated between about £8,500 and £10,500 per year for a single student. This does not include tuition fees, mobile phone bills, entertainment costs or unexpected bills. Our undergraduate study fees in 2018/19 are £9,250 a year for UK and EU students and between £11,750 and £12,500 for international students. What financial support is there for me?

Part-time study Tuition fees for part-time study are up to the pro-rata amount of the full-time equivalent. Please note that international students are not normally able to study part-time due to the immigration restrictions of the Tier 4 student visa.

There are many sources of funding, but for UK students most fall mainly into two categories: help from UWE Bristol and help from the UK Government. Some are repayable, some are not. It is important to check your entitlement before you start your studies.

Indicative additional costs Any additional costs given per course are what you could reasonably expect to incur during your studies and are for items not covered by the standard tuition fee. These could be for materials, text books, travel, clothing, software or printing.

Financial help from UWE Bristol We aim to help make sure everyone with potential has the opportunity to study with us, regardless of social or financial background. We provide over £3.5 million to students each year through bursaries and hardship funds.

Bursaries (non-repayable) We’ve a generous Bursary Scheme, which puts money in your pocket when you need it most – during your studies. The Bursary Scheme for 2019/20 entrants has not yet been finalised. Other non-repayable bursaries (such as music and sports scholarships) are available. For example, if you’re an elite sports person, you could qualify for a full bursary and an additional support package. University scholarships and grants (non-repayable) There are some bursaries and scholarships available from individual departments. Please contact us or have a look at our website for further information.

Financing your studies can be a bit of a juggling act. We can help and advise you, whether you’re a UK student, EU, international, full-time, part-time, or any combination.

Learner Support Fund (non-repayable) We’ve a large fund for UK students who find themselves in financial difficulty while studying. Awards are generally between £100 and £1,000. In exceptional cases students may receive significantly more. We give priority to those who are unable to work part time due to a disability or caring responsibilities. International scholarships (non-repayable) Each year we offer a number of international and country-specific scholarships for international students. Most are partial tuition fee waivers, where payment is made against your tuition fee and reduces the amount you are required to pay. Short-term loans (repayable) We can provide small, interest-free loans to students in temporary financial difficulties (if, for instance, payment of your funding is delayed at the start of the year). Financial help from the UK government – tuition fees (UK students only) Tuition fee loan (repayable) You can apply for a fee loan to cover your annual tuition fees. Previous study at higher education level can remove entitlement to the fee loan. Financial help from the UK government – living costs (UK students only) Student Finance Living Cost loan (repayable) This is available to full-time Englishresident students from Student Finance England (SFE). If you are from Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales, you can apply for funding from Student Awards Agency for Scotland, Student Finance Northern Ireland and Student Finance Wales. The loan is paid into your bank account at the start of each term. See below for terms and conditions of the fee and living cost loans. Help for students with children (non-repayable) There’s additional support for UK students with dependants, including help with childcare. This additional support is income assessed. Social work bursaries If you are registered on a social work course, English-resident students may be eligible for a bursary in the second and third years of study, alongside the standard student funding. State benefits (non-repayable) UK students studying part time, or full time students who are disabled or who have dependants, may be eligible to receive benefits while studying.

Terms and conditions of the fee and living cost loans The UK government lends you the money for your fees and, for UK students only, your living costs. Once you graduate, you start to pay it back when you’re earning at least £25,000 per year (subject to change). At this point, 9% of your earnings above £25,000 per year will be deducted from your salary by your employer. Annual salary

If you never earn above the threshold (£25,000), you will never repay the loan. Thirty years after graduation any remaining debt is cancelled. Repayments are based on what you earn, not on what you owe. So whether your course costs £7,500 per year or £9,250 per year, you’ll repay the same each month. Student loans do not go on your credit file.

USEFUL TERMS Accredited Learning (AL) Accredited Experiential Learning (AEL) These schemes allow you to gain credit for successful previous study (AL), or for knowledge and skills gained in the workplace or elsewhere (AEL) provided the subject is valid for your course of study. Such credit may be counted towards the credit total needed for the Higher Education programme for which you register.

Alumni Alumni are former students of the University.

Award Within UWE Bristol, you may come across a course being referred to as an award. Strictly speaking, the award (ie a degree) is the qualification you get at the end of your course. Sometimes, courses are also called programmes.

Block release Block release attendance involves occasional full-time attendance for days, or weeks, during a course of study.

CAS

First degree

Certificate of Acceptance to Study, needed by international students when applying for a visa.

This is another name for an undergraduate degree.

Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS)

This is a certificate (Certificate of Higher Education 120 credits) or diploma (Diploma of Higher Education 240 credits) which you may be awarded if you are unable to complete the course for which you originally registered.

All UWE Bristolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s courses are creditrated, and the credit values correspond with the national CATS scheme. This means students may be able to carry over credits from previous successful study within UWE Bristol if they wish to resume their studies at a later date, or transfer their credits to, or from, another institution. The notional study time to gain 10 credits is normally 100 hours.

Day release

Interim award

Placement A period of approved work-based learning or study in a host organisation or institution approved by the University for this purpose, as defined in the requirements of a specific award.

Programme

Day release attendance involves full-time attendance one day a week during term-time.

A programme is a degree course which leads to a UWE Bristol award.

European Credit Transfer Scheme (ECTS)

A small group session, usually led by staff.

A credit scheme which allows you to carry credits between a recognised institution outside the UK (if you are, for instance, doing an exchange) and the University.
