Best city to live in. Happiest city. Kindest city. Most beautiful city.

A GREAT CITY FROM EVERY ANGLE Bristol regularly tops all kinds of polls. This comes as no surprise to the people who live, work or visit our city.

to engineering, high-tech to healthcare, established national corporations to growing start-ups, things are really thriving here.

It’s a place that prides itself on being friendly, welcoming, safe, creative and diverse. With an international airport, two major railway stations and a coach station, it’s well connected too. In fact, we’re only 90 minutes by train from London.

International cuisine, independent and designer stores, free museums… in our opinion, it’s hard to think of a better city to live, study and work in. Not to mention the music, technology, culture, clubs, sports, art and festivals, as well as Bristol’s world-famous street artist, Banksy.

It’s also a city of opportunities, being a popular base for multinationals like Rolls-Royce, Airbus and Intel. From banking and the creative industries

No.1

Whatever you’re looking for, Bristol has it all.

There is incredible support at UWE Bristol. I was very impressed with how different the learning environment was. Classes were so interactive, very hands on, taught in small groups and a great mix of different cultures. Nkechi MSc International Human Resource Management Turn over the page to find out more about Nkechi’s UWE Bristol experience.

A STRONG SHOW OF SUPPORT FOR NKECHI Nkechi originally chose a Masters at UWE Bristol because of our strong ranking in HR. The support she received before arriving and throughout her studies reassured her she’d made the right decision. “I felt that I settled in really well to university life, and this was due to the support I had even before arriving. Emails came each week reminding me what I needed to do, which really prepared me. My tutor was very supportive and from day one I enjoyed how different the learning environment was. Classes were interactive, very hands on, taught in small groups and a great mix of different cultures. I remember telling my family early on how impressed I was with the teaching and how I knew I had come to the right place. Aside from the teaching, there are such good support systems in place to help you study too. Blackboard, the virtual learning environment, and the library are both great resources. Everything you need is here.

10

My dream is to work in HR back in Nigeria, and one day to establish my own HR consultancy. My master’s course has been so useful in helping me work towards that. It even included two placements with Bristol City Council, where I was able to get really involved in the HR department’s day-to-day work and processes. The experience gave me fantastic insight. UWE Bristol is full of opportunities, and there are lots of things to get involved in outside of your course. I’ve joined the UWE Bristol Dance Society and a gospel choir, plus become a Student Ambassador, where I’ve been able to represent the University at internal and external events. I’ve really seen myself grow by living and studying abroad, and the experience couldn’t have been any better.” Nkechi MSc International Human Resource Management

MUHAMMAD’S MAKING THE MOST OF EVERY OPPORTUNITY Attracted to UWE Bristol because of our aerospace engineering course and close links to potential employers, Muhammad soon discovered that excellent teaching is only part of his student experience. “My first year couldn’t have been better. While moving to Bristol was a little strange at first, I found everyone was so welcoming and supportive. It was really easy to get involved and make good friends. The lecturers provide amazing academic support as well. They explain everything clearly and I can discuss any questions I have with a small, friendly group of students in the weekly tutorial meetings. There are so many different activities to choose from outside of studying too. Amongst other things, I’m a member of the UWE Bristol Cricket Club and help the Islamic Society out at charity events. I also signed up as a Student Ambassador and my people skills have improved a lot as a result.

Volunteering at a local school is another way I’ve enjoyed pushing myself. It was challenging, but I got so much out of the experience and really improved my public speaking, which will definitely help me in my future career. On top of everything, Bristol’s a great city to be in. It’s very green, friendly and culturally diverse, and much better than London, which is just too busy if you ask me. Everybody’s welcome and everyone feels at home here. After my degree I’d like to join a large organisation as an aerospace engineer. Hopefully somewhere like Airbus or Rolls-Royce, so I can stay and work in the Bristol area. Placements and internships are available as part of my course, so they’re hopefully a really good place to start. I’m only one year into my degree and I’ve already gained a lot of different experiences, which is so important.” Muhammad BEng Aerospace Engineering

A WARM WELCOME FROM YOUR STUDENT OFFICER Meet Krystof, our Students’ Union Student Officer for international students. “Living abroad has already been a great experience for me. From the International Student Orientation onward, everyone at UWE Bristol has been so supportive. It was great to meet other international students in the same situation, and I’m gaining so much more confidence in my English as well. That’s partly why I wanted to become a Student Officer. Not just to challenge myself and try something out of my comfort zone, but to help other international students have a great experience here too.

26

The Students’ Union is so important as it makes sure all students are represented and supported. There are societies you can join depending on your faith, values or interests. It’s all about bringing people together, celebrating differences, learning from each other, and developing new skills and interests. I was so excited about being elected and I can’t wait to start helping other people. From the orientation events and Freshers’ Week on, I plan on making a real difference and supporting others to make the most of every opportunity.” Krystof Students’ Union Student Officer

THE COURSE THATʼS RIGHT FOR YOU We offer more courses than what we’ve listed within this prospectus. What we’ve included is a selection which may be of the most interest to you. Please see our website for details of all our courses.

Distance Learning Distance learning is a way of learning remotely without being in regular face-to-face contact. Some distance learning courses may include periods of attendance at the university. Please see website for details.

Foundation year A one-year course designed to help you gain the skills required for entry to an undergraduate bachelor’s degree. We offer a range of Foundation years across subject areas.

Postgraduate taught master’s degree This type of course usually involves a 12-month taught element and a six-month research project, which can be carried out anywhere in the world. The award may be a Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc), Master of Law (LLM) or Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Research degree Professional Doctorate (Prof Doc) and Master of Research (MRes) are research degrees with little or no taught element. They take a minimum of two or three years to complete and often longer.

Undergraduate bachelor’s degree Usually a three-year course which can take the form of a Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BSc), Bachelor of Engineering (BEng), or Bachelor of Law (LLB). Architecture degrees, some engineering degrees, and all degrees with a compulsory placement year, last for four years.

THE SMALL PRINT

The information in this printed prospectus, including that relating to the availability of courses, is current at the time of going to press ( July 2017) and is subject to alterations. For the most up-to-date information, please check our website.

Data protection Personal data about students, including records of academic achievements, is stored by the University in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998. The University’s Data Controller is the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Commercial Director and Corporation Secretary).

Disclaimer We’ve made every effort to make this prospectus as accurate as possible. However, it is printed over a year before the courses start. We continually enhance our offer by responding to feedback from our students and other stakeholders, which may mean we make changes to courses after the prospectus is published. You’ll find the most up-to-date information about our courses on our website. Very occasionally we have to withdraw or combine courses due to limited demand, as this would have a negative impact on the student experience. When this is the case, we'll advise you as soon as possible before the start of the course and aim to provide a suitable alternative. Wherever possible, we use images of our campus and students. Occasionally we use stock images for illustrative purposes.

42

USEFUL TERMS

Accredited Learning (AL) Accredited Experiential Learning (AEL) Any previous successful study may be recognised by the University as AL. Similarly, any knowledge and skills gained at work could be assessed and awarded credit as AEL in line with the University’s Academic regulations. Any credit that is successfully recognised as AL or awarded through AEL may count towards the total credit you need to gain your award. If you think you’re eligible, contact us to find out more.

Alumni Alumni are former students of the University.

Award Within UWE Bristol, you may come across a course being referred to as an award. Strictly speaking, the award (ie a degree) is the qualification you get on completion of your course.

Certificate of Acceptance to Study (CAS) This is a certificate needed by international students when applying for a visa.

Day release

Intermitting

Day release is where your employer gives you a day a week to attend university, as part of your job.

Intermitting is an interruption to your study. If you’re unable to continue studying, you may ask permission to intermit and resume your studies at a later date. You won’t lose any credit already gained.

European Credit Transfer Scheme (ECTS) You can convert your UWE Bristol credits to ECTS credits. 120 University credits are worth 60 ECTS credits.

First degree This is another name for an undergraduate degree.

Interim award If you are unable to complete the course you originally registered for, you may be eligible to receive an interim award. For example, within a BA(Hons) degree, you can achieve a BA, DipHE or CertHE, depending on the number of modules you pass and academic credit you achieve.

Integrated bachelor’s/master’s degree An integrated bachelor’s/master’s award is achieved when you complete a course which extends beyond a degree with honours and includes postgraduate level study.

Placement A placement is a period of relevant, supervised work experience, assessed as part of your course. With some courses, placements are compulsory; in others they are optional. The length of placement varies between courses and can be anything from a year to a few days.

Programme Courses are also sometimes called programmes.

Tutorial A small group session, usually led by staff.

Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) UCAS is responsible for processing applications to full-time and sandwich undergraduate courses.
