Your guide to welcome events, activities and student life at UWE Bristol
Alô
Welcome to your University! Hello and welcome! “Firstly, congratulations for getting here! I know for many of you it has taken a lot of hard work and determination to arrive here at UWE. My job is to help you make the most of your time now that you’ve arrived! On Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 September 2015 we will be running a number of workshops and events to help you settle in to life in the UK. We’ll be joined by our Global PAL (Peer Assisted Learning) Leaders – a group of current UWE students on-hand to help you over the coming weeks and throughout the year. All the workshops are really useful and some will be repeated over the two days. You can book the workshops by following the links in this document. I look forward to meeting you all!” Nic Yates Global Student Support Co-ordinator

Nic’s Bristol tips “Bristol is a brilliant place to live, and during your time here I’m sure you’ll discover your own favourite parts of it. But to get you started, here’s some of my top tips of things to do around the city.” Sightseeing
Shopping
The 150-year-old Clifton Suspension Bridge is the most iconic attraction in the city – a must see! Bristol streets are also covered in wonderful street art – one of my favourites is the famous Banksy piece on Park Street.
Cabot Circus is a shopping area full of designer and leading high street shops. Gloucester Road and Park Street offer an abundance of quirky independent stores.
Beyond Bristol
Festivals
Bristol is perfectly positioned to visit other great UK destinations – from the neighbouring historic city of Bath to the world renowned Stonehenge and Harry Potter Studios. We work with travel organisation Absolute Fun Times to offer a range of day trips out of the city. We’ll let you know about them by our Global newsletter (sent to your UWE email address) and on our Facebook page: facebook.com/uweglobal
It feels like there is a different festival every weekend during Bristol’s summer. The famous Balloon Fiesta and St Pauls Carnival are definitely worth a visit.
Food and drink There are so many good places to choose from! Head to St Nicholas’ Market for tasty street food or go to Gloucester Road for independent cafés and bars. Harbourside restaurants are great when the sun is shining to relax and watch the world go by.

Fancy spending the weekend with a British family? HOST UK offers the chance to experience home and community life and learn what it means to be British and share your own culture too. UWE will even pay for your first visit during your studies!
UWE Community Hub There are always plenty of exciting things inside the Octagon, so make sure you pay the Community Hub a visit to find out about the latest activities.
Prayer rooms The Community Hub at Frenchay Campus offers a place to worship to followers of all faiths.
The Students’ Union at UWE Whether you want to join a society, or have your voice heard on student matters, UWESU provide a wide range of services to all UWE students.
Getting a job The Students’ Union job shop, which can be found in the Students’ Union building, advertises jobs - so make sure you sign up to find out about current opportunities.
Academic workshops Make sure you sign up to sessions run by the English Language and Academic Skills Unit (ELASU). They offer a range of sessions from English language courses, to writing courses and a variety of workshops from plagiarism to critical thinking.
Global PAL Leader Sessions Global PAL Leaders run weekly English conversation mentoring sessions. These fun sessions will give you the opportunity to learn about British culture and customs, as well as help you to improve your English and increase your confidence. They will be run by the same Global PAL Leaders each week so will be a great way to get to know new people too!
