Education UWE Bristol is one of the largest and most successful providers of postgraduate programmes in the South West. The Education department has an impressive track record of nurturing highly successful teachers through our initial teacher training programmes, and of supporting the continued academic and professional development of a wide range of professionals working in the education, childhood and cultural sectors.

Sharing best practice Our provision enables a wide variety of educators to join a community of practice where they can share their enhanced professionalism and expertise through networks and clusters. We have developed strong partnerships with over 400 carefully chosen schools, colleges, academies, early years’ settings and specialist education providers in and around Bristol. These partners bring you unrivalled support, guidance and hands-on experience.

Shaping the future of education An excellent course structure with high-quality university-based training, diverse school placements, well-planned immersion and complementary placements that help trainees acquire a range of teaching strategies to apply in the classroom. Ofsted Report 2014

We have strong research interest in the processes, practices and policies concerning teaching and learning across all age ranges and settings, both in and beyond formal educational structures. Our research helps to shape educational policy, with direct impact on professional practice and development in schools, colleges and other educational settings. This research activity strongly informs our teaching across all of our programmes.

Innovation in education Postgraduate study at UWE Bristol has the great benefit of being strongly practicebased; students are involved in their own practice, have space to reflect on this with support from tutors, and can also share ideas and experiences with their course colleagues. We will enable and encourage you to think creatively and innovatively about how you teach, exploring different approaches and methods. The breadth of our partnerships and provision also means that you will have the opportunity to get involved in cross curricular events and experiences such as our Blitz Project and Medieval Fair. Alongside our strong practice-focus we are dedicated to ensuring that students refer to research when they consider what constitutes best practice. UWE Bristol are also leaders in evidence-based education interventions; for example PGCE Primary and EY students are trained as UWE Bristol reading partners using the highly successful evidence-based intervention programme Better Reading Partners. Working within their placement school, students develop a deep understanding of the child as a reader through formative assessment and reading with the child using diagnostic strategies and are able to provide short interventions that can target particular difficulties.

Education

Our courses provide a thorough grounding in core subject knowledge, effective communication skills, the ability to fulfill different learning needs as well as enabling innovative and effective evidence-based practice through research and development.

Computing and Information Management We offer a wide range of courses which explore many fields with one thing in common – the use of IT to solve problems and to enrich society. At postgraduate level we focus on software engineering and information technology and management.

Much of our research is conducted in collaboration with industry and academia, including Airbus and CERN, one of the world’s largest and most respected centres for scientific research. Our research is integrated into our teaching and course content, providing you with leading-edge knowledge and enriched learning. UWE designed CRISTAL software is giving scientists the power to understand and analyse more data than ever before. This powerful technology can fuse huge amounts of data from anywhere around the globe into information that can be managed, analysed, tracked, stored and, most importantly, understood. The work of UWE’s researchers helped the scientists at CERN to successfully study the conditions of the Big Bang and is now a solution to real world issues across many different industries. Our partnership with CERN has generated many placement and career opportunities for our students, giving them ‘real world’ experience in this field.

This course focuses on the development of core skills and critical awareness. Leadership, management and reflective analysis are central to your learning and development. Providing a balance of academic and work-based study, the course draws on contemporary research to develop the personal and professional skills of practitioners within the sports coaching domain and will equip you for future employment or further study.

The Integrated Professional Development (Coaching Science) course is designed to allow coaches from all sporting environments to develop their practice and professional network by completing a range of portfolio projects negotiated in partnership with personal tutors from Hartpury College’s HE Sport department. Portfolio projects can be completed by individuals or may form a component of a group effort, with coaches working together to investigate an aspect of personal practice before creating an output, such as a report or presentation, that can be published to the wider coaching community. These portfolios can therefore focus on part of the learner’s current workplace responsibilities or be used to plan future ventures directly linked to the coach’s environment and career progression plans.

The MRes in Animal Behaviour and Welfare will allow you to gain a detailed understanding of the latest developments in animal behaviour and welfare science, building on previous study at undergraduate level. During the course you will undertake a personalised research project fully supported by expert staff, outstanding facilities and industry links. This original research is flexible and can be tailored to specific interests and career aspirations. Our excellent facilities include a canine hydrotherapy unit, a working farm, a red deer herd and a collection of exotic and domestic animals. We also have links with a number of organisations and establishments. These include Cotswold Wildlife Park, Natural England, RSPB and West Midlands Safari Park. The knowledge and skills that you will gain from this course will enhance your career prospects and can be applied in future scientific research and in practical areas such as conservation and zoos. Standard entry requirements Within University regulations, it is possible to claim credit for previous study (AL) or experience (AEL) at postgraduate level. Many students find that this combined with the flexibility in length of study and attendance requirements, enables them to complete a course while working. The possibilities should be discussed with the Admissions Office at the time of applying.

Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (LPC) Applications for the full-time GDL and LPC are made through the Central Applications Board (CAB) and are available online at www.lawcabs.ac.uk or from: Central Applications Board, PO Box 84, Guildford, Surrey, GU3 1YX. Applications for the part-time GDL and LPC are made directly to UWE Bristol using the

Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

On receipt of your application, the University will consider whether you will be invited for interview. If shortlisted, you will receive an invitation to interview by UWE Bristol. You will be notified of the outcome of your application by UTT. Successful applicants must provide a satisfactory Declaration of Health and a further declaration on criminal convictions (Disclosure and Barring Service clearance) before taking up their place. Competence in the use of English language and evidence of this may be required at interview.

Professional and short courses The application process for professional and short courses can vary according to the course. Your application will be considered by a member of staff from the department in which you will be studying. Please visit: www.uwe.ac.uk/whatcanistudy for more details on how to apply to these courses.

Research Please visit www.uwe.ac.uk/research and use the contact details provided in the relevant subject section.

Immigration - Points Based System If you require a visa to study in the UK, you will need to apply for a General Student Visa under Tier 4 of the Points Based System (PBS) immigration system. To apply for a visa under Tier 4, you must have an unconditional offer of a place to study and be issued a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from an institution which holds a sponsor licence as your visa will be linked to this institution. UWE Bristol has been approved as a Highly Trusted sponsor. Your visa application will be assessed and awarded points based on your offer of a place to study at your ‘sponsor’ institution and financial evidence showing that you are able to fund your studies and living costs in the UK. Some postgraduate taught courses and some research programmes of longer than six months may require Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) clearance. If you are studying a course which does require ATAS clearance, we will send you a separate letter to allow you to complete the online application form. For information on courses which require ATAS clearance, please visit www.gov.uk/ academic-technology-approval-scheme If you do require ATAS clearance, you will need to submit your ATAS certificate with your visa application. We advise that you allow at least four weeks between applying for your ATAS certificate and making your visa application. Under the new system UWE Bristol is responsible for ensuring that you are undertaking your studies while you are in the UK and we are required to inform the UKVI if you do not arrive for the start of your course, withdraw from your course, defer or suspend your studies, or if you do not attend for significant periods of time. Further information on the visa application process can be found by visiting: www.gov.uk/browse/visasimmigration/student-visas. If you have any queries about UKVI visa requirements please contact: pbshelpline@uwe.ac.uk
