In today’s hyper-competitive, ever-changing jobs market, it’s not enough to know. And practical work experience isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s a must.

WHY YOU NEED A 360° EXPERIENCE

Everything we do at UWE Bristol is focused on making sure that you’re well-positioned – academically, practically, professionally, socially – for the future. The future that you want.

Our focus on real-world learning experiences means, as a graduate, you’ll be adaptable, enterprising and ready for work. Of course, we can’t do this alone. As a creative, forward-thinking university, we collaborate with business, the public sector and government to map skills shortages, develop courses and provide internships and work placement opportunities. And to give you an idea of our commitment to getting you the experience you need, we’ve one of the largest paid internship programmes in the UK, arranging over 2,000 internships since 2010. Future work-ready? You will be.

We’re living and working in a hightech knowledge economy. The jobs market is crowded and competitive. 80% of new jobs are in high-skill areas. This puts you, and universities like UWE Bristol, at the heart of the workforce. But – and it’s a sizeable but – you need to have the right skills, knowledge, experience and mindset to compete and get the career that you want. You need more than functional skills. You need to show that you’ve applied them – and well.

The most important qualities in graduates are energy, dynamism and enthusiasm – a belief in what you are doing. Simon Walker Director General of the Institute of Directors

AN EDUCATION LIMITED TO A LECTURE HALL? THAT WASNT FOR LARRY. Choosing where you want to spend the next three years of your life – or longer – isn’t easy. So you need an opinion you can trust. Having studied for a BA in Banking and Finance, Larry now has a career that pushes him everyday. And he’s ready to meet those challenges head on. “I chose UWE Bristol because the course covered many different aspects of finance. It wasn’t limited to theories that would be out-dated when applied in the real world. It also included the option of a year abroad or a 40-week industrial placement, just the practical experience I was looking for. I did a placement in my third year, which helped me to connect the dots between studying and working. I believe it gave me an advantage after university. I knew what to expect within the industry. I also made good use of the career services at UWE Bristol.

Thanks to their personalised advice, I felt better prepared when opportunities presented themselves. Everyone wants the ‘student experience’ – one that you’ll remember forever. That’s why it’s important that the university you choose has spaces for students to meet and collaborate. UWE Bristol has the sports centre and students’ union. I played 5-aside and became a student rep for my course, both great ways to meet people. And Bristol is such a vibrant city to study in – there’s a carnival every summer. I miss my first year of university the most. It’s a feeling I’ll never get back! It was great to meet so many people from different walks of life. We still keep in touch today. If I could, I’d do it all again.” Larry BA(Hons) Banking and Finance

Ever thought about the best way you learn? We have. That’s why we’re taking learning far beyond the classroom, beyond the traditional, helping you to gain knowledge and experience in the way that works for you.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED.

YES, YOU. Now, what’s right for Larry or any other UWE Bristol student you’ll hear from in this prospectus, isn’t necessarily going to be right for you. One learning experience doesn’t fit all. So we’ve worked hard – we’ll continue to work hard – to make sure you’re able to learn in the way that’s right for you and that you have your 360° experience, not someone else’s. That starts with where and how you study.

360° VIEWS Get ahead of the game. Apply your knowledge in realistic workplace settings. You can't beat hands-on Our academic staff are inspiring leaders and influential practitioners. They’re closely connected to industry, practice and the professions. They’ll ensure you’ve the right enterprising mind set. What does that mean? Donna Whitehead, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of the Bristol Business School and Bristol Law School, puts it best: “We want to have enterprise embedded across all of our courses to ensure our students are work-ready and able. Enterprise skills such as problem solving, teamwork, risk taking and creative thinking are transferable to all roles, regardless of whether a student is self-employed or working for an employer.”

First-class facilities Our facilities are first-class and only getting better, because we’re always looking to the future. We’re spending £250 million on our accommodation, equipment and technology. That shows you where our priorities lie. With you. Many of our practice-oriented spaces are genuinely leadingedge. From nursing simulation suites to multi-media broadcast studios and financial trading rooms, these spaces are the training grounds you need to apply your knowledge. And then there’s our virtual learning tools, extensive library service, robotic labs, Centre for Sport… Everything’s here www.uwe.ac.uk/ourfacilities

I love the fact that you get to use really expensive equipment, the sort of kit you’d get in the workplace, so it’ll be all very familiar when I start working.” Leah BSc(Hons) Forensic Science Inspiring, connected staff “I worked as a forensic practitioner for just over 11 years so I can bring experience that I gained within the field and relay that information and knowledge to our students.” Diane Robinson Senior Lecturer in Forensic Science

BROOKE CAN FACE ANY ARGUMENT. BRING IT ON. “The course has been really interesting and the staff are always on hand to answer questions, they give detailed feedback and provide an extensive range of sources to support their lectures. I had the chance to explore different areas of law and identify which area I wanted to specialise in. When I started my degree, I had a strong interest in criminal law and hoped to pursue that when I graduated. But, working in civil/familial law through the Pro Bono Unit and commercial law in my modules, helped me recognise that I want to pursue a commercial or corporate career in law. There’s a variety of assessment strategies here and my confidence, presentation and communication skills, and legal reasoning have all benefited from it. Being able to communicate and present arguments clearly is essential in the legal industry, and my course at UWE Bristol has really helped me develop these skills. The practical experience

that you gain on and through the course is invaluable. I have been involved in the Pro Bono Unit here at UWE Bristol, and for the past two years I’ve been the student lead. Chairing meetings and organising events meant that I could develop my leadership skills, as well as my teamwork. I have also had the opportunity to draft legal documents and lead a project – two skills which will be invaluable in my career. The Pro Bono work has been an amazing experience. It looks great on my CV and it’s allowed me to develop as a person. I’ve also been involved in the Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) and student ambassador schemes, and they have really helped me develop my confidence and leadership skills – and doing these things alongside my studies has helped me improve my time management and organisation.” Brooke LLB(Hons) Law

Everything we do starts and finishes with making you work-ready and ‘the-job’s-yours’ employable.

IT’S ALL ABOUT

YOU

You haven’t even joined us yet and we’re already looking ahead to when you leave. Because that’s our focus: we want you to have an incredible experience while you’re here and, vitally, graduate with the skills, mindset and experience you need to make your ambitions happen. But how? Research-informed teaching and personalised, practice-oriented learning. Sounds impressive, doesn’t it? But what does it mean for you? Let’s start with research. As Professor Steve West, our Vice-Chancellor, says, “UWE Bristol’s research has resulted in real benefits to the economy and society as well as increasing academic knowledge.” Our research has real impact on society and we are often able to integrate it with our learning and teaching. This means you benefit from a richer, fuller, even-more-relevant learning experience which, in turn, increases your employability. Win-win.

And personalised and practiceoriented learning? We’ll take the time to understand your ambitions and then tailor your UWE Bristol experience to help you achieve them. And we can do this in a number of ways. Through different approaches to learning and by making sure you’ve access to the right learning spaces – spaces like our up-to-the-minute simulation suites (think financial trading rooms and mock courtrooms). The point here is to help you learn in the way that’s most suited to you and your future career or postgraduate goals. For a lot of our students, this means practical work experience.

Three-quarters of all the research conducted at UWE Bristol is highly rated in terms of its impact. Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014

THE FUTURE OF RESEARCH – IT’S ABOUT MORE THAN BOOKS. Ciara is studying Biomedical Science and hopes to go into research. It’s a field that’s changing all the time, but the practical approach taken at UWE Bristol is standing her in good stead. When she lands her first interview, she won’t just have an understanding of the technologies used by the industry – she’ll have used them herself. “I’d always wanted to study science, but I chose UWE Bristol because the course was so hands-on. You get to experience what you hear about in the lectures – to put theory into practice. The equipment we use in the university lab is the same equipment that’s used in the real world of research, so it’s preparing me for my future career – I’ll know what to do and exactly how it works. I love Bristol. It’s just the right size and there’s always stuff going on. I’ve tried kickboxing and I’ve volunteered at a school – setting up mini science experiments. I found out

about volunteering at a UWE Bristol employment fair, it opened doors for me and enabled me to get experience outside of my course. I’m hoping to do a placement in my third year – I’m really looking forward to networking and meeting people who are currently working in research. It will help me to decide what I actually want to do, and where I want to work in the future. Whatever I choose to do, my time at UWE Bristol has improved my skills in so many ways. I’ve learned how to work in a team. I’ve been introduced to lots of different people, practised working with different personalities, and developed my leadership skills too. I’m proud to say that I stood up and presented a case study to a group – something I’ve never been good at. This course has pushed me out of my comfort zone and given me confidence in my own ability.” Ciara BSc(Hons) Biomedical Science

Bristol does poll-topping well. And small wonder. Bristol is a vibrant, welcoming, creative, smart and diverse city, open to the new, open for business, open to everyone. We’re biased, of course, but it’s hard to think of a better UK city to study, live and work in. Music, tech, culture, clubs, shopping, sports, art, festivals, fashion and food. Not to mention Wallace and Gromit, and the artist we know and love as Banksy. Bristol has it all – and then some.

Professional, passionate and caring

I decided to study Diagnostic Imaging after some time working in administration for the NHS. I really enjoy working with and helping people so I was keen to study at a university that provided placements at different hospitals. You learn more by spending time with different people and getting to use a variety of equipment. The course was excellent and helped me secure employment at Southmead Hospital almost immediately after graduating. We have modern facilities that simulate real world environments. Whether it’s by using our hospital-standard equipment in diagnostic imaging, delivering radiotherapy to virtual patients, practising skills in our Occupational Therapy Resource Centre, or accessing our fully equipped ambulance, you’ll gain practical knowledge in real-life scenarios. This will boost your confidence and equip you with on-the-job skills before you go into the field. You’ll spend a substantial part of the course on placement. So when you’re not learning on campus, you’ll be training with our partners in the NHS, social services, voluntary agencies, charities and independent health and social care providers. Many of our courses are accredited, further improving your career prospects. And they’re informed by research conducted by our professional staff. Their life-changing studies support patient groups, in areas such as dementia care, assisted living, and pain management. Do you want to make an impact in the technological or creative industries? Do you want to push boundaries, take risks and challenge convention? Our students have aptitude, and will question, test and share ideas. If this sounds like you, we’ve a choice of courses to suit your interests, whether it’s in music or games technology, digital media, or product design.

CREATIVE TECHNOLOGIES Enabling creativity through technology Creative Technologies are evolving into one of the most exciting and challenging areas of academic study. The cross-disciplinary interaction between digital technologies, such as computing, and the more traditional arts and humanities subjects, allows our students to explore both scientific and artistic thinking. Our courses are challenging, yet rewarding, and our graduates are in demand. Some have secured coveted positions within world-class organisations including the BBC, Rockstar North and Hackenbacker sound studio, or have set up their own successful businesses. We work hard to maintain partnerships within the sector to ensure placement and internship opportunities are available. Employers contribute to course content and provide a valuable insight into industry. These strong links have even led to the creation of new courses, such as our Product Design degrees, where students have taken part in consultancy projects with a range of worldrenowned organisations.

74

Creative Technologies

You’ll be inspired by our first-class facilities designed to simulate industry and promote creativity. We’ve state-of-the-art equipment including our Product Design Workshop equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters and CNC routers and you’ll have access to virtual reality development software, computer-aided design (CAD) studios, music studios and purpose-built Mac and PC labs. Our degrees are supported by enthusiastic, world-class staff who have both strong academic backgrounds and real-world experience. This ensures our teaching, research and learning environment is relevant in terms of academic study, to industry, and to our wider society. You’ll also meet leading academics, researchers and professionals from outside organisations too, as part of our guest lecturer series. And when you’ve soaked up the knowledge and sharpened your skills, you’ll get to showcase your creations to the world, in our annual Degree Show.

At Rockstar North I’m responsible for designing and programming missions for our various open world titles, primarily in the Grand Theft Auto series. I wouldn’t have got this job without my degree from UWE Bristol. I use programming every day, a skill I developed because of their industry relevant programming and design modules. It’s been key in getting myself noticed in the sea of applicants that apply for jobs in the games industry. Michael BA(Hons) Games Technology Senior Mission Designer, Rockstar North

Could you design and create solutions for some of the world’s greatest challenges? Do you have a passion for communication, teamwork and problem solving? We promise to match your creativity and ambition by arming you with the technical skills, knowledge and commercial savvy needed to succeed. Pick from one of our many accredited engineering courses, and we’ll help you reach your career goal.

ENGINEERING Become a multidisciplinary specialist Echoes of Bristol’s engineering greatness are everywhere. The Clifton Suspension Bridge dominates our cityscape. This spectacular structure was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel – one of the most innovative engineers of the 19th century. Historians believe Bristol inventor Sarah Guppy could have given Brunel the idea, though in those days, women engineers were unheard of. Brunel and Guppy's legacy continues today, with the largest aerospace firms in the UK all operating in the region. Study with us, and you’re ideally placed for work-based opportunities and future employment prospects. UWE Bristol engineers change our world. We’ve links with internationally-renowned companies such as Airbus, Rolls-Royce, GE Aviation and Intel, who have made our city their home. They offer students work placements, internships and the chance to take part in live projects. Key partners, including QinetiQ and the MOD, also provide practical insights into the issues they face day-to-day. And you’ll get an inside track on the industry and future careers through regular presentations from visiting professionals.

84

Be inspired by our state-of-the-art equipment. You’ll boost your creativity and technical ability developing and testing concepts using first-class technology. Get hands-on in our manufacturing workshops, wind tunnels, and concrete and robotics labs. Test aircraft and vehicles in high-tech flight and vehicle simulators. Or try out theories in large computing labs and computer-aided design (CAD) suites. Once you’ve created your prototypes, you can showcase them to employers, media and the public at our annual Degree Show. We place a strong emphasis on employability and skills development. You’ll be encouraged to take part in national competitions and initiatives. You may wish to volunteer your time helping develop infrastructure in third world countries through schemes like Engineers without Borders. Whatever branch of engineering you study, we’ll encourage you to get involved with activities, boost that CV, grasp opportunities and discover where your interests lie.

My advice to anyone researching degree choices is that choosing the right course at the right university is only part of the story. What really matters is applying yourself from the start. No matter how much help you get with writing a CV, you still need good things to put in it. I did my third-year placement with Babcock, which led to me being offered a graduate training scheme place. I really liked doing engineering and enjoyed being in a working environment. I’ve always liked the military and the Royal Navy in particular, which is why I know that a career in naval defence engineering is for me. When you’re 17 and applying to university you don’t really know what’s out there, but going on placement gives you a real taste. It lets you know that you actually want to do the job you are studying for. Lawrence MEng Mechanical Engineering Babcock, Devonport Dockyard

What do our students have in common? A desire to understand individuals and communities; an inquisitive mind that analyses the world and is eager to contribute to society. Sounds like you? Let us transform this curiosity into valuable skills that will prepare you for a wide range of career opportunities.

SOCIAL SCIENCES Start making a difference To thrive in your chosen field, you’ll need more than a good understanding of the subject. You’ll need the skills to be able to question, critique and evaluate the world around you. We’ll help you to develop these and more – ensuring you stand out from the competition and become an asset to any organisation. Make the most of the many volunteering and placement opportunities on offer. They will broaden your horizons and sharpen your skills. We have a wide range of partners including HM Prison Service, the NHS, local councils and charities across the UK and abroad, so you can put your learning into practice. This might be advising young offenders in the community, teaching philosophy in schools, supporting charities or working with government policy makers. Our teaching staff are as inquisitive as our students. Many are renowned for ground-breaking research in diverse areas including body image, crime, risk and society, global security and human rights. This depth of knowledge doesn’t just shape our courses; it influences policy and practice – nationally and internationally.

We do more than teaching theory in a traditional way. Our teaching methods are engaging. You’ll develop first-class analytical skills and you’ll get to apply them in the classroom – whether you’re writing policy papers and speeches or taking part in role-plays and debates. Learning happens off-campus too. During field trips and through our local engagement programme ‘Social Science in the City’, you’ll be exposed to complex issues such as the breakdown of communities; the role of psychology in understanding political and social behaviour; and the impact of globalisation. This will be your chance to contribute as an active citizen, appreciating social challenges and developing possible solutions.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS Making your application Check the entry requirements Once you’ve fully researched the courses we have on offer at www.uwe.ac.uk/ courses and if you decide to make an application, please check you meet, or are working towards, the appropriate entry requirements for your chosen course. In addition to the specific requirements outlined on individual course pages, you should be aware of our general information on entry requirements www.uwe.ac.uk/ugapply Applications for full-time study Apply online through UCAS for entry onto all degrees including foundation degrees and those with foundation years. You need to go through UCAS even if you’re applying for the second or third year of a course. If you’re not currently studying at school or college you should still apply through UCAS. Your referee can be your manager or employer. You’ll be guided through the straightforward online application process at www.ucas.com. If you require further advice, contact your teachers, career advisers, the National Careers Service or British Council offices. Some of our courses are highly competitive and are therefore unlikely to consider late applications. You should ensure wherever possible you apply prior to the 15 January UCAS deadline. We are of course happy to consider applications submitted after the January deadline for courses which have vacancies. Courses without vacancies will be highlighted on our website. Key dates throughout the process, including UCAS deadlines, 130

The Application Process

can be found at www.uwe.ac.uk/ timeline. Alternatively please see the UCAS website www.ucas.com Applications for part-time study Applications for all part-time undergraduate courses are made directly to us or our local study partners. Visit the course pages on www.uwe.ac.uk/courses, have a look at the course you are interested in and follow the instructions to apply. International student applications As well as applying through UCAS, international students can apply through one of our overseas representatives. See www.uwe.ac.uk/ international for contact details of our representatives in your home country. This service is free. Deferred entry In most cases we’re happy to accept applications from students wanting to take a gap year. But there are some courses which don’t accept applications for deferred entry. This is made clear online on the relevant course pages www.uwe.ac.uk/courses. If you decide after you’ve applied you want to defer, you’ll need to contact our Admissions Team for advice. Courses subject to approval If the degree you’re interested in is marked ‘^Subject to final UWE Bristol approval’, applications should still be made in the normal way. The website information will be kept up-to-date regarding the approval status of a programme www.uwe.ac.uk/courses. Applicants holding an offer on such a programme will be notified of changes through their UWE Welcome website.

Advanced entry If you’ve already obtained a qualification in, or can demonstrate you have studied relevant subjects at a level equivalent to Higher Education, you may be considered for exemption from part of the course. Before we make you an offer, we’ll need full details of the qualification (including units or modules) and your marks, which you can give us by uploading your transcript to your UWE Welcome website once you’ve applied. Welcoming diversity Equality of opportunity is one of our core values at UWE Bristol. We welcome applicants from a wide range of academic and social backgrounds. We consider each application on the basis of an applicant’s suitability for the course applied for, at the same time acknowledging the statutory requirements of the University and relevant professional organisations. We are committed to enabling equality of opportunity in access to study courses, assessment and in developing and delivering the curriculum. We aim to provide a working and learning environment free from any kind of discrimination or harassment. We encourage staff and students at all levels in the organisation to commit to these values. Disabled students We welcome applications from those who are disabled, including those with mental health conditions, medical conditions and specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia.

We’ve pulled together some really useful information for you regarding the application process. But if you still have any queries about applying to UWE Bristol, we are always happy to answer them. Simply email admissions@uwe.ac.uk or call us on +44 (0)117 32 83333.

Approximately 11% of our current students have declared a disability. Please disclose any relevant conditions or difficulties on your application form, so we can start to explore your needs with you. If you do disclose, we’ll ask you to provide more information about any access and support needs you might have. Following this, we’ll offer you advice and in some cases, invite you to speak or meet with us in advance of your course starting. We’ll help you with reasonable adjustments, support and equipment, including funding. And we’ll be happy to help with any questions you have at any point in the process. You can disclose a disability to us at any time and if you do, we’ll only share this information with staff involved with organising your support and reasonable adjustments. It’s best to disclose at application stage if possible. The information you disclose will not have an impact on whether you are made an offer to study with us. Criminal convictions If you have a criminal conviction you must declare it on your application form. We may ask you to provide further details of the nature of the conviction. We will not be able to continue considering your application until this information has been provided. Further information on the admission of applicants with criminal convictions is available from our Admissions Team.

Considering your application As soon as we receive an application we’ll send login details for your personal UWE Welcome website. We send this information by email. It gives you access to track your application with us. We’ll communicate with you via this website throughout the application process, automatically updating it as soon as anything changes. If you’ve applied for more than one of our courses, your site will show details and communications about them all. We’ll encourage you to check this site regularly and to set admissions@uwe.ac.uk as a ‘trusted’ email source to ensure useful updates are not missed. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS UCAS tariff points We make our offers using UCAS tariff points. We accept points from all qualifications in the UCAS tariff. This means you can include points from a variety of qualifications, including (but not limited to): A and AS Levels (including General Studies and Critical Thinking); BTEC; Music and Drama; Welsh Baccalaureate; International Baccalaureate;CoPE (Certificate of Professional Effectiveness). On page 136-137 are some of the more common qualifications in the UCAS tariff. This table is not exhaustive. Please see the UCAS website www.ucas.com for the complete list.

International qualifications We accept a wide range of international qualifications from all over the world. You will find full details on our website www.uwe.ac.uk/mycountry

What are our minimum entry requirements? For an honours degree course without an integrated foundation year, you normally need two A Levels, or the equivalent, such as a BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma, International Baccalaureate, or Access to Higher Education Diploma. For an honours degree course with an integrated foundation year, you would normally need one A level or equivalent. Please see our website for full details of all the qualifications which meet our entry requirements www.uwe.ac.uk/ugapply Students who achieve the UCAS tariff points required (and have passed an 134

Entry Requirements

English Language qualification) almost always have gained qualifications which meet our minimum entry requirements. However, if you have taken a number of other qualifications, (such as AS Levels or Music and Drama qualifications), you should contact us for advice.

Required subjects For some courses, we specify subjects and grades you must achieve. This is usually because you need to have reached a certain standard in a subject in order to succeed on the degree course. Subjects may be required at GCSE, or at A Level, Extended Diploma, IB, or equivalent. Some courses may offer a foundation year as an alternative entry point. It is really important you check you will have the required subjects for your course and contact us (or enquire at an Open Day) if you are unsure.

English Language and Maths We require an English Language qualification for all courses. We accept GCSE English Language grade C (or grade 4 in the new GCSE grading system), or IELTS 6.0 (International English Language Test) with no less than 5.5 in any one element. Note: we require IELTS 7.0 for Health and Social Care courses. The minimum for each element varies depending on the course. For details, please see our courses page www.uwe.ac.uk/courses GCSE Maths and/or Science grade C (or grade 4 in the new GCSE grading system) is required for many of our courses. Please note: the following qualifications are not sufficient

alternatives to GCSE Maths and English Language at grade C or above: Level 2 Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number; Level 2 Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy; and Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English. Although these Level 2 qualifications are at the same level as GCSE Grades A–C within the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF), they do not cover the full breadth of knowledge demanded by GCSEs. Therefore, Key Skills and Certificates in Adult Numeracy or Literacy must be Level 3, or above, for us to accept them as alternatives to GCSEs grade C and above. Please contact us if you are unsure.

Access courses An Access to Higher Education Diploma is often the best route for adults without the academic qualifications normally required, but whose life and work experience has given them a strong motivation to go to university. We’ll consider applications for all our courses from those who are taking or have passed a QAA-recognised Access to Higher Education Diploma, or Adult Learners Credit Framework Progression to Higher Education Certificate. For courses which have ‘required subjects’ you normally have to include these subjects within your Access course. These specific requirements, including any grade requirements, are detailed on our course pages www.uwe.ac.uk/courses

You’ll find entry requirements for each course on our website. We’ve made them as straightforward as possible – and we explain below the different ways you can gain a place on the course of your choice.

Integrated foundation year options We offer a number of courses which include a foundation level entry year for those who need an additional year to gain the required subject knowledge before starting their chosen degree. The best way to explore these is to come to an Open Day, or you can contact us for advice.

Heading Higher Passport (HHP) Plus HHP Plus is a widening participation scheme bringing together enrichment programmes taught in local schools and colleges in partnership with UWE Bristol. We provide a range of experiences and activities, which have the potential to raise aspirations and increase awareness of the opportunities available in Higher Education. The aim is to support learners in decisions about their future. To find out more www.uwe.ac.uk/ schoolsandcolleges

Interviews, auditions and portfolio reviews For some courses, we may ask you to attend a selection event such as an interview, audition or portfolio review as part of the admissions process. The individual course listings will tell you if this is a requirement in your chosen course. Typically: • Creative industries – applicants bring examples of their creative work (their ‘portfolio’) which they discuss with course tutors.

• D rama and acting – applicants come for an audition and discussion with course tutors. • I nitial teacher training and health and social care – applicants attend a selection event which will involve undertaking a test and having an interview with course tutors.

Initial Teacher Education (ITE) courses I n addition to meeting the entry requirements stated for the course you must: • S atisfy the Department for Education about your suitability for the teaching profession and your ability to undertake a training course. For further information, please see the webpage for the course you’re interested in. • P rovide a satisfactory Declaration of Health and a further declaration on criminal convictions (Disclosure and Barring Service clearance) before taking up the place. • S how competence in the use of English Language and Maths – you must pass the Professional Skills Test in literacy and numeracy before starting the course. Further information: https:// getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/ eligibility-for-teacher-training

Health and social care courses In addition to meeting the academic entry requirements stated for the course you must: • D emonstrate your suitability and ability to study the course. For further information, please see the webpage for the course you’re interested in. • P rovide a satisfactory Declaration of Health and a further declaration on criminal convictions (Disclosure and Barring Service clearance) before taking up the place. • S ome courses ask you to show competency in the use of English Language and Maths. You will undertake literacy and numeracy tests when you attend an interview.

Experience – but not the usual entry requirements We can sometimes accept applicants onto a course who do not have the usual entry requirements, but who have substantial experience (usually a period of years) in a field closely related to the course. We need to be sure you are adequately prepared for the academic methods of teaching and assessment you will encounter on your course. Sometimes we will recommend you do an Access course or offer you a degree with an integrated foundation year instead.

FEES AND FUNDING These pages offer an overview of fees, other costs and financial help available at the time of going to print. You must check our website for the latest information www.uwe.ac.uk/money

How much are the tuition fees? Full-time study At the time of going to print with this prospectus, the tuition fees for 2018/19 have not been set. Our undergraduate study fees in 2017/18 are £9,250 a year for UK and EU students and between £11,750 and £12,500 for international. The fee for UK and EU students studying a Foundation Degree at one of our local study partners was £7,500 in 2016/17. Part-time study Tuition fees for part-time study are up to the pro-rata amount of the full-time equivalent. Please note that international students are not normally able to study part-time due to the immigration restrictions of the Tier 4 student visa. It is likely 2018/19 fees will rise, but please see our website for updated information on all fees www.uwe.ac.uk/money

Indicative additional costs Any additional costs given per course are what you could reasonably expect to incur during your studies and are for items not covered by the standard tuition fee. These could be materials, text books, travel, clothing, software or printing.

138

Fees and Funding

Living costs If you’re living away from home while you study, you’ll need to cover costs such as accommodation, travel, bills and food. We’ve estimated between about £8,500 and £10,500 per year for a single student. This does not include tuition fees, mobile phone bills, entertainment costs or unexpected bills. A typical budget for 40 weeks might be: Weekly cost

What financial support is there for me? There are many sources of funding, but for UK students most fall mainly into two categories: help from UWE Bristol and help from the UK government. Some are repayable, some are not. It is important to check your entitlement before you start your studies, especially if you have previously studied a higher education course.

Financial help from UWE Bristol We aim to help make sure everyone with potential has the opportunity to study with us, regardless of social or financial background. We provide over £3.5 million to students each year through bursaries and hardship funds.

Bursaries (non-repayable) We’ve a generous Bursary Scheme, which puts money in your pocket when you need it most –during your studies. The Bursary Scheme for 2018/19 entrants has not yet been finalised. Other non-repayable bursaries (such as music and sports scholarships) are available. For example, if you’re an elite sports person, you could qualify for a full bursary and an additional support package. University scholarships and grants (non-repayable) There are some bursaries and scholarships available from individual departments. Please contact us or have a look at our website for further information.

Financing your studies can be a bit of a juggling act. We can help and advise you, whether you’re a UK student, EU, international, full-time, part-time, or any combination.

Learner Support Fund (non-repayable) We’ve a large fund for UK students who find themselves in financial difficulty while studying. Awards are generally between £100 and £1,000. In exceptional cases students may receive significantly more. We give priority to those who are unable to work part time due to a disability or caring responsibilities. International scholarships (non-repayable) Each year we offer a number of international and country-specific scholarships for international students. Most are partial tuition fee waivers, where payment is made against your tuition fee and reduces the amount you are required to pay. Short-term loans (repayable) We can provide small, interest-free loans to students in temporary financial difficulties (if, for instance, payment of your funding is delayed at the start of the year). For further details on funding, please visit www.uwe.ac.uk/money

Financial help from the UK government – tuition fees (UK students only) Tuition fee loan (repayable) You can apply for a fee loan to cover your annual tuition fees. Previous study at higher education level can remove entitlement to the fee loan. If you have questions or need further information about funding options for these courses, please contact us at admissions@uwe.ac.uk

Financial help from the UK government – living costs (UK students only) Student Finance Living Cost loan (repayable) This is available to full-time Englishresident students from Student Finance England (SFE). If you are from Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales, you can apply for funding from Student Awards Agency for Scotland, Student Finance Northern Ireland and Student Finance Wales. The loan is paid into your bank account at the start of each term. See below for terms and conditions of the fee and living cost loans. Help for students with children (non-repayable) There’s additional support for UK students with dependants, including help with childcare. This additional support is income assessed. Social Work bursaries If you are registered on a Social Work course, English-resident students may be eligible for a bursary in the second and third years of study, alongside the standard student funding. State benefits (non-repayable) UK students studying part time, or full time students who are disabled or who have dependants, may be eligible to receive benefits while studying.

Terms and conditions of the fee and living cost loans The UK government lends you the money for your fees and, for UK students only, your living costs. Once you graduate, you start to pay it back when you’re earning at least £21,000 per year. At this point, 9% of your earnings above £21,000 per year will be deducted from your salary by your employer. Annual salary

If you never earn above the threshold, you will never repay the loan. Thirty years after graduation any remaining debt is cancelled. Repayments are based on what you earn, not on what you owe. So whether your course costs £7,500 per year or £9,250 per year, you’ll repay the same each month. Student loans do not go on your credit file.

Trusts and charities (non-repayable) There are a large number of organisations who may provide additional financial support to students, but demand for these funds can be very high. You can find out more at www.gov.uk

Degrees with Foundation Year Entry

A Higher National Certificate is a course created by the Business and Technician Education Council (BTEC, now part of Edexcel), usually obtained by part-time day and/or evening attendance. An HNC is sometimes considered equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree studied full-time.

Award Within UWE Bristol, you may come across a course being referred to as an award. Strictly speaking, the award (ie a degree) is the qualification you get at the end of your course. Sometimes, courses are also called programmes.

BA

Bachelor of Engineering; the name given to an undergraduate degree in Engineering. 142

CAS

A Diploma of Higher Education (240 credits) is a qualification which may be gained on successful completion of the first two years (or equivalent) of an undergraduate degree, studied full-time.

Block release attendance involves occasional full-time attendance for days, or weeks, during a course of study.

Glossary

Day release attendance involves full-time attendance one day a week during term-time.

The University offers a range of degrees which include a foundation year (year 0)

A foundation degree is an intermediate work-related course (240 credits) developed in conjunction with employers. The abbreviation FdSc is used for a technical, or science-based course, FdEng for an engineering-based course and FdA for an arts-based course.

HNC

HND

MEng

A Higher National Diploma is a course created by the Business and Technician Education Council (BTEC, now part of Edexcel). An HND is sometimes considered equivalent to the first two years of an undergraduate degree studied full-time.

Master of Engineering is an undergraduate degree extended by one year beyond the BEng, to give an ‘Integrated Masters’.

Honours/Hons An Honours (Hons) degree requires a higher level of student attainment and number of credits (360) than a degree without honours (300 credits). Honours degrees are graded in four classes: First (1), Upper Second (2:1), Lower Second (2:2), and Third (3). A degree without honours is called an Unclassified, or Ordinary degree.

MPlan Master of Planning is an undergraduate degree extended by one year beyond the BA(Hons), to give an ‘Integrated Masters’.

MSci Master of Science degree is an undergraduate degree extended by one year and is typically granted for studies in sciences, engineering, and medicine, and usually for courses more focused on scientific and mathematical subjects.

Interim award

Modular programme

This is a certificate (Certificate of Higher Education 120 credits) or diploma (Diploma of Higher Education 240 credits) which you may be awarded if you are unable to complete the course for which you originally registered.

All our undergraduate and most of our postgraduate courses are modular, which means the course is divided into modules.

Intermitting Intermitting is an interruption to your study. If you are unable to continue studying, you may ask permission to intermit and resume your studies at a later date. You do not lose any credit already gained.

Level See Module.

LLB Bachelor of Laws; the name given to an undergraduate degree in Law.

Module A module is a unit of study requiring a certain amount of notional study time. Modules conform to one of the following levels:

The credit value of a module depends on the amount of study time and the assessment load. Modules are worth between 10 credits (100 hours of notional study time) and 60 credits (600 hours).

Placement A period of approved work-based learning or study in a host organisation or institution approved by the University for this purpose, as defined in the requirements of a specific award.

Programme A programme is a degree course which leads to a UWE Bristol award.

Sandwich A period away from the University involving a work experience, which is a requirement for a sandwich award.

Tutorial A small group session, usually led by staff.

Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) UCAS is responsible for processing applications to full-time and sandwich undergraduate courses.

Level 0 = foundation Level 1 = first year of an undergraduate degree (full-time) Level 2 = second year of an undergraduate degree (full-time) Level 3 = final year of an undergraduate degree (full-time) Level M = postgraduate
