It has been an honor to serve our community this year through leadership roles with United Way of Hall County. We both know the importance of United Way’s mission to unite people, organizations and resources to improve lives in Hall County. By “Connecting the Community” with our focus on education, income and health, United Way has continued its legacy of community collaboration to build a better, stronger, more UNITED community for all. Our values guide our efforts and lay the foundation for all that we do. These values serve not only as a description of what we are today, but who we strive to be tomorrow: • P ARTNERS – We can do more together than we can alone. On page 8, you’ll see how we support and participate in a number of partnerships. • S ELFLESS – We are focused on the greater good. Our board approved conducting a survey to learn what’s important to our community when it comes to giving, and the results will help guide the future direction of our organization. • T RUSTWORTHY – We are responsible with our resources and accountable to our community. We are reporting to you on the outcomes of the funding investments made on your behalf. • L EADER – We are proactively engaged to influence real change. In response to a recognized and unaddressed issue, we hired a part time program coordinator for the Read Learn Succeed initiative. In addition, United Way adopted a new Leadership Giving Circle structure to recognize and build intentional relationships with our donors. In the following pages, you will see the businesses, organizations and individuals who supported our work through the Annual Campaign. We are truly grateful for that support. Melissa Tymchuk led the 2014-2015 Campaign for United Way to success, raising over $1.7 million dollars.
ANSWERING THE CALL
At United Way’s Annual Campaign Kickoff, Melissa Tymchuk, Campaign chair and director of public relations and marketing at Northeast Georgia Health System, set the stage for the year through a presentation by John O’Leary. O’Leary, who at age nine was burned on 99.9 percent of his body and was not expected to live, challenged the community to take action through an inspiring presentation. He challenged the group to not settle for complacency or status quo, but to make bold commitments every day and ask, “What more can I do?”

Taking O’Leary’s challenge to heart, Tymchuk immediately asked the community to consider what more they can do to improve lives in Hall County, and then do it. She also implemented the United Way of Hall County 10% Giving Club encouraging donors to consider giving just a little bit more this year – 10 percent more time or 10 percent more money.

“This community took on the challenge and then some,” said Tymchuk. “With 584 individual members and 52 workplace campaigns joining the 10% Giving Club in its first year, it took us all doing our part – our ‘one more thing’ – to accomplish our goal for Campaign and our goals for improved lives in Hall County.”

“The Community Investment Committee consists of 12 Hall County community volunteers who bring their unique experiences and perspectives from different industries, backgrounds and walks of life to determine what programs will receive funding from United Way,” says David Smith, DVM, Community Investment chair and director of veterinary services & marketing at Merial Select. “As donors themselves, these individuals understand the immense responsibility they have on behalf of our community.” For the 2015-2016 year, the committee carefully reviewed the outcomes from the programs that received funding in the previous year. These programs focused on United Way’s strategic priorities in education, income and health, the basic building blocks of a good quality of life. “It was exciting to see how these programs are able to demonstrate the value of their work and how they are fulfilling United Way’s mission,” reports Dr. Smith. “The committee’s effort resulted in the continued funding of 44 programs in the coming year.” United Way believes we all win when a child succeeds in life, when families are financially stable, and when people are healthy, so we focus our efforts accordingly: • EDUCATION – Helping people, from birth through adult, achieve their potential through learning. • INCOME – Supporting families while they actively achieve financial stability and independence. •H EALTH – Improving people’s physical, mental and social well-being.

WE CAN DO MORE TOGETHER THAN ALONE
We know that no one single organization can address all the issues facing our community today. That’s why one of the values that demonstrates how we fulfill our mission of improving lives is to be a PARTNER. In a true partnership, each participant contributes their passion, resources and expertise to achieve a common goal. United Way develops, fosters and supports relationships with businesses, not-for-profit organizations, civic clubs, governments, faith communities, educational institutions and individuals to LIVE UNITED and collectively focus on issues that are important, vital and essential for every resident of Hall County to have a good life.

Sometimes, United Way will take a lead role in developing partnerships and other times, we contribute financial resources. Whatever form it takes, United Way is an active partner in a number of collaborative efforts in our community. Here are a few examples… RISE (REAL INTERACTIVE SUMMER EXPERIENCE) A collaboration of Brenau University, Gainesville Housing Authority, Georgia Mountain Food Bank, THINK, Gainesville City School System and United Way of Hall County Summer slide is not something found at a park. Instead, it’s a concern for kids in Hall County and their ability to retain what they’ve learned during the school year. National statistics show that during the summer, low-income children typically lose up to two months in reading achievement as compared to their middle class peers who may actually make slight gains. And if they are already behind in school, this summer slide in learning can have a devastating effect. Brenau University, Gainesville Housing Authority, Gainesville City Schools, THINK and Georgia
Mountain Food Bank partnered together to offer a 6-week summer education program for low income children in grades 1-5. RISE camp provides an opportunity for learning that focuses on reading, writing, math and computer skills, supplemented by supervised field trips, play/fitness activities, and arts and crafts. “By partnering with United Way of Hall County we were able to expand our program to include 5th grade students, and also add 20 more students,” says Maria Calkins, resident services coordinator for Gainesville Housing Authority. “Additionally, United Way’s emphasis on early childhood learning since launching their Read Learn Succeed Program, has helped create more community awareness and momentum to our efforts. This has been a tremendous partnership for us in more ways than one.”

Northeast Georgia Health System, Hall County Health Department and Good News Clinics partnered together to provide a program targeted to equip low income residents in Hall County with the tools and education they need to better manage their diabetes and improve their health.
BRENAU UNIVERSITY COUNSELING AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES OUTREACH A collaboration of Brenau University, Good News Clinics, Family Promise, The Salvation Army, Gainesville Community Service Center, Rape Response, Three Dimensional Life, and United Way of Hall County Brenau’s Center for Counseling & Psychological Services (BCCPS) offers free or low-cost mental health services for adults, children, couples and families throughout the community. By partnering with United Way of Hall County, BCCPS was able to expand from two locations to six locations and provide services at organizations such as Good News Clinics, Family Promise, The Salvation Army, Gainesville Community Service Center, Rape Response and Three Dimensional Life.

“The lack of adequate counseling for individuals living in our community can have a negative effect on us all,” says Kristen Green, director of BCCPS at Brenau University. “It can manifest itself into problems in the workplace, home, school, and often through the judicial system. Through United Way’s support, we have been able to expand our program to better target individuals in our community who are currently under-served or have unmet psychological needs.” 9 2014-2015 ANNUAL REPORT
DIABETES MONITORING PROGRAM A collaboration between Northeast Georgia Health System, Hall County Health Department, Good News Clinics and United Way of Hall County Managing a chronic illness can be a challenge for anyone, but for a person living in poverty, the financial burden of managing a disease such as diabetes can be overwhelming. Faced with the choice of buying food for your family, medication or keeping a roof over your head, it’s easy to see how one may choose to forgo the tools to manage the disease in an ongoing manner. Northeast Georgia Health System, Hall County Health Department, Good News Clinics and United Way came together to provide a program for indigent diabetic patients to encourage routine testing and proactive management of the disease. Studies show that ongoing management of diabetes can have profound effects on a patient’s overall health. Providing this program for low income residents in our community to have access to free testing strips and meters allows them to invest in their ongoing health and improve their physical well-being. “United Way generously funded the diabetes testing strips and meters that have been used in our program, improving access to primary medical care for low income patients and helping them become more accountable for their role in managing their diabetes,” says Christy Moore, manager of Community Health Improvement for NGHS and The Medical Center Foundation. “More than 200 patients are enrolled. They agree to keep their appointments, have regular lab work completed and attend needed educational sessions, which helps them better monitor their blood sugar levels and better manage their diabetes. The combination of these efforts are improving patients’ lives daily.”

READ LEARN SUCCEED Read Learn Succeed was launched in 2014 as an initiative to encourage early learning in children ages birth to five, particularly focusing on reading skills and vocabulary development. Early efforts entered on community and parent/caregiver awareness of the issue. Last spring, the Gainesville City Council and Hall County Board of Commissioners proclaimed May 16, 2014 as “Celebrate Literacy Day,” and United Way hosted a number of activities across the community in partnership with Gainesville City Schools, Head Start, Gainesville Parks & Recreation, Hall County Library System, Northeast Georgia Medical Center, The Longstreet Clinic and others. Special guest, Clifford The Big Red Dog, made a number of appearances throughout the day. Approximately 600 pre-K age children were given a bag of books for summer reading, and their families were provided information on summer enrichment opportunities in our community.
The effort paid off as Adrianne Junius with the Hall County Library System reported over 3,900 youth enrolled in the Summer Reading Program – an increase of over 200 from the previous year. “Gainesville City Schools Pre-K program has been most fortunate to partner with United Way and Read Learn Succeed. As part of Celebrate Literacy Day, each Pre-K student was provided with several books to promote summer reading. Thank you for encouraging our students and community to grow in literacy,” says Tammy Miller, director of the Pre-K Program for Gainesville City Schools. Plans are underway for additional activities that include a partnership with Carroll Daniel Construction and the Gainesville THINK program to build and install several Little Free Libraries and an expanded Summer Reading Program.
As made evident by the programs above, our efforts have greater impact when working together with experts in our community who have the resources to get the job done. United Way serves as more than just a funding partner, but as a connection point to improving lives in Hall County. 2014-2015 ANNUAL REPORT 10

Each year, the Chairman’s Award is given in recognition of a company that demonstrates high campaign excellence, but whose support also extends far beyond the annual campaign. Wilheit Packaging has been a United Way supporter for many years. Providing invaluable in-kind donations, great legacy leadership and volunteer support. This multi- generational leadership began in 1977 with Philip Wilheit Sr., president and CEO of Wilheit Packaging, and continues today with his son, Philip Wilheit, Jr., partner of Wilheit Packaging.

In addition, Wilheit Packaging has been integral in securing various in-kind donations throughout the years, especially when it comes to our event, Dinner From the Farm. They truly demonstrate what it means to give,advocate and volunteer, while building a legacy that shows and leads others to LIVE UNITED!
