PRESENTATION OF GRADUATES 2021 SATURDAY, OCTOBER X, 2021

THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES THE ARMS OF THE UNIVERSITY Forming the main background of the shield is the sea represented by white and blue (three each) wavy lines on which is the open book; the upper part of the shield – the chief – is red with a lion to show the connection with the Crown, but the lion is covered with black spots. This is the lion borne by H.R.H. Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, appointed by the King (George VI) to be the first Chancellor, so that this appointment is recorded forever in the Arms of the University. The Crest is the brown Pelican which fishes in its prehistoric fashion along the coasts of all the Caribbean islands: the Pelican is a symbol of care for the young because of the medieval, but untrue, belief that it punctures its breast to feed its young on its own blood. It is also used as crest by the Corpus Christi Colleges of both Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

ABOUT THE COVER ____________________________________________________________________ The cover image depicts the region’s beautiful marine environment, the foundation of our Blue Economy, and hints at some of the ecosystem services it nurtures – such as nutritious food, livelihood support, employment in fisheries, tourism, water sports and shipping, coastal protection, white sand beaches, aesthetic beauty, recreational opportunity, cultural identity, high biodiversity, among other sustainable development features. As Small Island Developing States (SIDS) or more aptly ‘Large Ocean States’, the marine environment is one of the most valuable assets we have and certainly one that should be treasured, protected and managed for the enjoyment and benefit of all future generations of Caribbean people. Ocean governance, sustainable fisheries, conservation and rehabilitation of coral reefs, and sustainable coastal tourism are all areas of focus at the Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES) at Cave Hill Campus in our teaching and research programmes, and critical to achieving so many of the region’s sustainable development goals.

PRESENTING THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is an internationally recognised university rooted in the Caribbean. Since 1948, this university has provided service and leadership in its mission to advance sustainable development for the survival of the Caribbean economy and society. The UWI has been consistently ranked among the top universities globally by the most reputable ranking agency, Times Higher Education (THE). In the latest World University Rankings 2022, released in September 2021, The UWI moved up an impressive 94 places from last year. In the current global field of some 30,000 universities and elite research institutes, The UWI stands among the top 1.5%. The UWI is the only Caribbean-based university to make the prestigious lists since its debut in the rankings in 2018. In addition to its leading position in the Caribbean, it is also in the top 20 for Latin America and the Caribbean and the top 100 global Golden Age universities (between 50 and 80 years old). The UWI is also featured among the leading universities on THE’s Impact Rankings for its response to the world’s biggest concerns, outlined in the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Good Health and Wellbeing; Gender Equality and Climate Action. From a university college of London in Jamaica with 33 medical students in 1948, The UWI is today an internationally respected, global university with near 50,000 students and five campuses: Mona in Jamaica, St. Augustine in Trinidad and Tobago, Cave Hill in Barbados, Five Islands in Antigua and Barbuda and the Open Campus with over 40 Sites across the Caribbean. In addition, there are ten global centres in partnership with universities in North America, Latin America, Asia, Africa and Europe. One of only two regional universities globally, The UWI covers some 2.8 million square kilometres of sea, from Belize in Central America to Trinidad and Tobago in the southern Caribbean. The programmes offered are international in scope with a unique Caribbean focus, making The UWI the ideal educational institution for local, regional and international students. The UWI offers over 800 certificate, diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate degree options in Culture, Creative and Performing Arts, Food and Agriculture, Engineering, Humanities and Education, Law, Medical Sciences, Science and Technology, Social Sciences, and Sport. Programmes are delivered face-to-face and online, and through franchise arrangements with community colleges and other tertiary institutions. As the Caribbean’s premier university, it possesses the largest pool of Caribbean intellect and expertise and is committed to confronting the critical issues of our region and the wider world.

5

The UWI is an activist university and a pivotal force in every aspect of Caribbean development, residing at the centre of all efforts to improve the well-being of Caribbean people. Through its annual output of graduates, Caribbean-focused research and policy advice to governments and the private sector, The UWI continues its contribution to the region’s stability and development. The UWI is committed to creating knowledge, applying and translating that knowledge into solutions, and improving lives in our region and the world. With a network of more than 237,000 alumni, there is no sector of Caribbean society, including the highest levels of government and business, in which our graduates are not found. Over 25 have risen to become Heads of Government or Heads of State, and countless are leaders of all the professions – locally, regionally and internationally. Two of the three Nobel Laureates of Caribbean descent also have direct ties to the University: Mona alumnus Sir Derek A. Walcott (Nobel Prize for Literature, 1992) and former Vice-Chancellor, Sir Arthur Lewis (Nobel Prize for Economics, 1979). The UWI’s current strategic plan, themed the Triple A Strategy, focusses on widening Access to quality tertiary education, Alignment of the university with academic-industry partnerships relevant to the region’s needs and improved Agility through global connections and initiatives. It aims to achieve the vision of an even more globally-agile, regionally-engaged, digitallydriven, academic community dedicated to playing an active role in promoting growth in the Caribbean economy and society. MESSAGE TO GRADUATING CLASS 2021 From the Chancellor My heartiest congratulations to each member of the graduating class of 2021! You have stayed the course and completed your programme of study, despite the disruptions over the past two years! Your studies have provided you with the tools to unleash your potential, to be critical thinkers, objective in your assessment of the information available to you, open to other schools of thought, and to be able to use that information for the advancement of yourself and of the community and society in which you exist. As you continue your journey, the operating environment has changed. In addition to the list of global challenges to be confronted – climate change, increasing food insecurity, rising poverty levels – we now have a global pandemic that has impacted how we work, how we engage socially and has also shown us how things can be done differently. I urge you to think outside the proverbial box, consider how you can function in ways that are easier on the environment – our fragile planet and generations to come will be grateful. This world is yours to protect, develop in ways that will benefit your progeny and theirs. Be kind to yourself, we often forget the importance of taking care of our own health. In these different circumstances, mental health is as critical as physical well-being. Hold fast to your dreams, but remain rooted in reality. I urge you too, to give back to The UWI. There are many ways in which you can do this – be mentors to students, serve as adjunct faculty or technical advisors in subject areas. There are multiple ways and opportunities to contribute to ensuring that the work and the reputation of The UWI remain at a high level. Wherever you are, the Alumni Office will be reaching out to you. There are chapters in many contributing countries and in the countries to which our graduates gravitate, and I hope that they reach out to each of you to keep you connected to your alma mater. Be well. Go forth and prosper!

Robert Bermudez Chancellor

MESSAGE TO GRADUATING CLASS 2021 From the Vice-Chancellor My warmest congratulations to each member of the graduating class of 2021! You are the second graduating class since the COVID-19 pandemic changed the way in which we do so many things, and your achievement reflects determination, perseverance and resilience, qualities that augur well for your careers going forward. We celebrate this stellar accomplishment with you, your families and loved ones, and wish you the very best in the future. Your success is our success and we are grateful to you for staying the course and demonstrating that in the face of a myriad of odds, by working together, we can achieve our targets. You are graduates of one of the top Universities in the world. Five years ago, in 2016, The UWI set out to assert its place among the best universities in the world. The Times Higher Education (THE) was identified as the most reputable and independent quality assured entity for this process. The THE annual rankings are a standard measuring tool in the comparative performances of the best global universities. Since our first ranking in 2018 among the top 5%, The UWI has risen steadily through 2019, 2020, and 2021 to the top 1.5% of globally ranked universities in the world. This is a spectacular performance. We have maintained our number one position in the Caribbean and among the top 1% of the best in Latin America and the Caribbean. The surge to the top 1.5% in the world gives us a considerable degree of professional satisfaction as a management and leadership team.We began a journey to the top five years ago and it is deeply satisfying that our hard work, resilience and commitment to the tenets of quality teaching, research and service, that we have arrived! 1.5 and Alive! In addition to this stellar performance, as you journeyed with us through your academic programme, The UWI also evolved. In 2019 a new campus, the Five Islands campus in Antigua and Barbuda joined the family. Through collaborative arrangements with partner universities, we established ten global centres – The UWI has a presence in Canada, China, Colombia, Europe, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Nigeria and the United States of America - every continent save Antarctica. Your university is on its way to achieving its vision of being “An excellent global university rooted in the Caribbean.” Today, we celebrate your achievements and the promise of even greater things to come. We look forward to your continued involvement with this noble institution which has nurtured so many and has placed you on a path to success. Mentor a student, contribute to scholarships and bursaries,

8

return as adjunct or full-time lecturers, advocate for The UWI in your professional networks. I wish you all the very best in your continuing journey and remember to soar high with Pelican Pride in all your endeavours.

One Love! Blessings! Hilary Beckles Vice-Chancellor

MESSAGE TO GRADUATING CLASS 2021 From the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Cave Hill Campus Dear Graduates It is my distinct pleasure to congratulate you on the successful completion of your programme of study at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. The past two years have been extremely difficult for us all as we battled through a global pandemic, ash fall and hurricanes. In the midst of these difficult circumstances, through all these challenges, you have made it. You have completed the journey to the end. This is indeed a proud moment for you and your loved ones and we, at the Cave Hill Campus, are also proud to be part of your academic journey. Well done! As you embark on your new path, it is important that you take a moment to reflect on your time with us at the Cave Hill Campus. Remember the many people you have encountered along the way who have all become integral to your development - your classmates, lecturers and tutors. All these individuals have helped to enhance your experience as you traversed the lecture theatres, quadrangles, laboratories and dance studios of the Cave Hill Campus. Remember also the commitment, the dedication, the hard work, the focus and determination required to complete the many assignments, presentations and final examinations. These qualities have helped to strengthen you and transform you into who you are today, a graduate and ambassador of The University of the West Indies. If the last two years of manoeuvring through a global pandemic and all its socio-economic repercussions has taught us anything, it is that we all face a future that no one can predict. But what I can assure you is that with your UWI education, you have acquired a body of knowledge, a toolkit of skills, an aptitude for higher learning and a sense of Caribbean identity that will enable you to thrive within this changing world while serving your community. I wish to therefore take this opportunity to remind you that as a graduate of The UWI, you have an important role to play in the continued development of Caribbean and international societies. Your newly acquired skills make you an invaluable asset to the region and the world. You will be required to help conceptualize and implement solutions to the many varied and complex problems which face our world today. Your UWI journey has equipped you with critical-thinking skills, a strong sense of self and a determination to strive for excellence. Do not be afraid to rise to the occasion and show the world who you are and what you can do. COVID-19 has caused a major shift in the way we function in the world today. Things have changed drastically in just a short period of time. The ability to adapt quickly, efficiently and effectively to change has proven to be, more than ever, a major asset. You will therefore be required to use your

10

experience at The UWI to guide you as you manoeuvre in your chosen paths. Remember to embrace change and never be afraid to try something new. Today, the Cave Hill Campus family joins you and your loved ones in celebrating your success. We are all very proud of you and your accomplishments and we wish you all the very best in your future endeavours. Congratulations! Please continue to be safe!

THE UNIVERSITY’S SONG

There is a Light Words & Music by Noel Dexter First Verse From Caribbean Islands, Guyana and Belize Was born our University of the West Indies. Proud symbol of our oneness, our strength in unity, With vision clear you came along to shape our destiny. To follow after knowledge, the truth to seek and find, To teach us love and justice, to liberate the mind. Today we see you rising a light out of the West, That guides the feet of all who seek the noblest and the best. Chorus There is a light that is rising, From out of the West, and proud bearers of that light are we, So we follow those whose work has brought glory to your name, Making a better world for you and for me. Second Verse From your noble portals, your sons and daughters go, To face a world of challenges, to conquer every foe. We’ll work and play together and as time marches on, We’ll never forget the lesson that “De whole a wi a one” UWI we praise you, we lift our voice in song. We let our big drums roll loud, and steel pans ping, ping, pong. For you have shaped our lives so that we can truly say To you we owe our gratitude, A debt we can’t repay. Chorus There is a light that is rising, From out of the West, and proud bearers of that light are we, So we follow those whose work has brought glory to your name, Making a better world for you and for me. And me. This is our University of the West Indies

VALEDICTORIAN 2020-2021 Ms Iyka Dorival Bachelor of Law First Class Honours Faculty of Law Upon completing my Bachelor of Law degree, my immediate course of action was to commence training for the Legal Education Certificate- a program I am currently enrolled in at the Norman Manley Law School. Upon completing this final certification and becoming an Attorney-at-Law, I hope to practice in at least three CARICOM countries to expand the depth of my legal knowledge and experience. Ultimately, I wish to specialise in alternative dispute settlement techniques, concentrating on commercial arbitration. In this regard, I aspire to become a Certified Arbitrator and Mediator. I firmly believe in the potentially positive impact that the full utilisation of ADR can afford to the region, especially the OECS. ADR ought to be maximised greater within our territories to ensure that access to justice remains a basic tenet of all legal systems. Therefore, one of my main aspirations is to assist in the positive shift toward restructuring and maximising ADR techniques. Further, I hope to refine and develop the leadership and advocacy skills gained throughout my Cave Hill journey to aid in community development and the de-stigmatisation of Creative Arts within the region. However, I remain open to whatever future opportunities and experiences are afforded to me!

PROFILES OF THE HONORARY GRADUANDS 2021 NICHOLAS BRANCKER International Musician and Music Producer You do not actually need to have a conversation with Nicholas Brancker to know that he is a philosopher who is passionate about culture, the arts and music; you can hear it in his creations. In fact, a music critique describes his music as “intense sonic ‘reasonings’ of many tongues, across many waters.” The raison d’être is to be found in his influences, an eclectic and unlikely array of personalities whose thoughts and skills would have a lasting impact on him as a person, a producer and a performer; figures such as Maurice White, Peter Tosh,Vivian Richards, Michael Holding, Ramsey Lewis, Miles Davis, Eddy Grant, Roberta Flack, Mahatma Ghandi and his dad, the late George Brancker. He is known in the industry as ‘the hit-maker” and the “musician with the Midas touch” but a humble Brancker is not courted by such flattery. He sees his success in very practical terms, for him creating is a matter of “stripping away all the trappings and getting to the soul of the music”, so that, listeners know when they hear a Brancker creation by its simple yet strong melodies and palatable tones. Brancker began his musical career at the age of three playing on the toy piano given to him by his parents and imitating the music he heard coming from the radio. Two years later, under the deft guidance of Barbados’ most recognized music teacher, Janice Millington, while a teenager at Harrison College, he began his classical music training. At age twenty, Nicholas Brancker broadened his musical experiences by working in studios and touring with Eddy Grant, the famed Guyana-born international recording artist. His musical travels led him to the Middle East and Europe enabling the young artiste/musician to return to Barbados with a more versatile and diverse interpretation of music. This was the beginning of his musical journey. He would soon set-up a simple recording studio in his bedroom, Chambers Studio, out of which a number of hits with local artists including MADD emerged. As an accomplished piano, bass and keyboard player, Brancker has collaborated with some of the “leaders” in the North American and British music industry, including but not limited to Roberta Flack, Fritz McIntyre of “Simply Red”, Cindy Lauper, Maxi Priest, hip hop producer and keyboardist Salaam Remi, and Patra, whose ‘Queen of the Pack’ album went gold in the USA in the nineties. He has graced the stage of Jazz festivals regionally and internationally, East, Far East and West, played for a Queen, a King, a couple of Princes and Princesses. He continues to cover the globe from the Caribbean to remote countries like Lithuania and Hong Kong taking with him the trademark Brancker sound that is hard to imitate and harder to recreate!

61

He has deservingly gained the respect of music enthusiasts regionally and internationally receiving numerous prestigious music awards including a 1992 Grammy Award nomination for “Love is” by Sherri Winston. Brancker has more than 3000 recordings to his name and is considered one of the driving forces behind the evolution of ragga soca music in the region. He has produced for the Caribbean’s biggest stars including Edwin Yearwood, Allison Hinds, Red Plastic Bag, TC, Rupee, from Barbados, David Rudder, Altantik, Surface, Machel Montano from Trinidad and Tobago, Dread & The Bald Head from Antigua, Nu Direct from St Vincent, DN5 from St Lucia and the now deceased Arrow from Montserrat, to name a few. Also in the late nineties he recorded his very own album, In Contempt, where he pushed back against being categorized in any single box. He explained, “The name of the album ‘In Contempt’ should be seen as me being in contempt of being labelled as a Jazz, R&B or Classical artiste, I am just an artist”. His second recording “NEWA” followed two years later, a collaborative project with a few of his closest musical Friends: Arturo Tappin, Eddie Bullen, and Wilson Laurencin with whom he tours frequently. Brancker has been awarded some of the region’s highest accolades, including the 1995 “Barbados Service Star” from the Government of Barbados. While he continues to produce music for the local Crop Over Festival, he admits his interest in calypso music has waned over the years. He spends much of his time now on tour with Roberta Flack travelling to major international cities around the world. In between gigs, he has been experimenting with new ways of making music. “Right now I’m inspired by the sounds of ordinary people’s every-day experiences and the music they create in going about their business. The current project reflects at the same time the breadth of my musical experience but also the intense “personalness” of what music means to me.”

OPEN CAMPUS COVID-19 Response During the Academic Year 2020/2021, the COVID-19 pandemic was the dominant issue and dictated to a large extent what could and could not happen. The University and the Campus followed the national protocols of the respective governments and operated within the constraints of those

protocols. The Campus’ response was led by the Campus Principal and the Open Campus Leadership Team/Emergency Management Team (OCLT/ EMT) co-chaired by the Campus Registrar and Director Open Campus Country Sites. The Principal’s astute leadership and the coordinating team efficiently and decisively steered the Campus through the difficult days from the beginning of the COVID-19 upheaval to the present. First Virtual Graduation • The Campus hosted its inaugural Virtual Graduation Ceremony on January 13, 2021. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 graduation slated for St. Kitts and Nevis was postponed, and subsequently a decision was taken to host a virtual graduation ceremony in January 2021. The virtual ceremony was planned and executed in collaboration with UWItv and featured all pre-recorded elements including the showing of individual photo screens and the calling of the graduand’s names. • These were punctuated by performances and the rendering of the CARICOM song bolstered with a mélange of images from the 17 Caribbean countries the Campus serves. Happily, while most of the audience was virtual, the Open Campus St. Kitts and Nevis organized an elegant in-person event to celebrate the award of the Doctor of Science honoris causa to their National Hero and first Prime Minister, Sir Kennedy Simmonds. There were also celebrations in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and beyond the Caribbean as Musician, Arranger, Composer, Musical Director, Producer and Educator Mr. Franklyn (Frankie) McIntosh received his award of Doctor of Letters honoris causa. The Open Campus led The UWI’s response and coordinated the shipment of relief supplies to the Country Site in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. • In addition, several concessions were given to Vincentian students including extensions for assignments and the provision of a counselling service to students who needed it. Financial assistance was provided to students in need, through funds donated by the Guild of Students and the Toronto Gala. • In collaboration with UWItv and The UWI Seismic Research Unit, the Open Campus hosted a live online programme entitled “Rally Round SVG” on April 13, 2021.
