From a university college of London in Jamaica with 33 medical students in 1948, The UWI is today, an internationally respected, global university with near 50,000 students and five campuses: Mona in Jamaica, St. Augustine in Trinidad and Tobago, Cave Hill in Barbados, Five Islands in Antigua and Barbuda and Open Campus, in addition to 10 global centres in partnership with universities in North America, Latin America, Asia, Africa and Europe.
One of only two regional universities in the world, The UWI covers some 2.8 million square kilometres of sea, from Belize in Central America to Trinidad and Tobago in the southern Caribbean.
Its programmes, international in scope with a unique Caribbean focus, make The UWI the ideal educational institution for local, regional, and international students. Over 25 have risen to become Heads of Government or Heads of State, and countless are leaders of all the professions – locally, regionally and internationally. Two of the three Nobel Laureates of Caribbean descent also have direct ties to the University: Mona alumnus Sir Derek A. Walcott (Nobel Prize for Literature, 1992) and former ViceChancellor, Sir Arthur Lewis (Nobel Prize for Economics, 1979).
Phase II of The UWI’s current Triple A Strategy (strategic plan), themed The Revenue Revolution is grounded in the vision that the University needs to facilitate an Access revolution in higher education in the Caribbean region given the low level of enrollment at the tertiary level, regionally and also among members of the Caribbean diaspora, deepen the Alignment of its resources and capabilities with industry to provide path-breaking solutions to challenges which hinder firm and industry competitiveness, become more Agile to take advantage of opportunities in the local, regional and global marketplace. These three strategic goals drive the Revenue Revolution strategy.

MESSAGE FOR GRADUATING CLASS 2022
viruses new and old, the war being waged by Russia on Ukraine has disrupted global supply chains, threatened food security and negatively impacted production in many industries. Developing countries such as ours in the Caribbean have to be mindful of shifts in the geopolitical landscape as our world is so globalised that events taking place in seemingly distant places impact us in ways that we do not expect.
My heartiest congratulations to you on successfully completing your programme of study!
These past few years have been challenging for all of us and I am absolutely pleased that you have reached this point. Your achievement demonstrates your determination and resilience and I believe this augurs well for our collective future.
Our lives have been irreparably impacted by a virus that has demonstrated its resilience and ability to adapt and made us change the way we engage with each other. The resurgence of infectious diseases that we thought we had conquered and eradicated has also reminded us that we must continue to be ever vigilant. In addition to
How well we adapt to these constantly changing circumstances around us will determine how well we thrive in the future. You are the shapers and custodians of that future. I am deeply aware of the dire need to protect our environment and reverse the negative impact of what industrialisation and the intense use of fossil fuels has done to our planet. Political, economic and social decisions made in the future by all of us, individually and collectively, will have an impact and I urge you to make those decisions thoughtfully and with a view to caring for and preserving your - our - future.
My heartiest congratulations!
Robert Bermudez ChancellorMESSAGE FOR GRADUATING CLASS 2022
Your world has been transformed by technology. The fourth industrial revolution which was already upon us was given impetus by the COVID-19 pandemic and we all got a taste of what the world of the future will look like. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, cloud technology, and the internet of things have become infused in our lives and have changed our perspective about how we interact with each other.
Traditional university life usually affords students opportunities to engage with counterparts others from other countries and cultures.
My heartiest congratulations to each member of the graduating class of 2022! You have toiled assiduously at your academic studies and today, together with your families and loved ones, we celebrate your achievement. Some of you are also secondtime graduates of this institution and I commend you for your commitment to pursuing a regional education.
Your journey to this day has been an interesting one. Some of you may have had only one and a half semesters of face-toface classes before we pivoted to remote teaching in March 2020. It is possible that some of you may have never been on one of the campuses!
Whatever your experience has been, this graduating class, like those of 2020 and 2021, has a special place in the unfolding history of this institution. Your success is our success and your University is grateful to you for staying the course and demonstrating that in the face of significant challenges, by working together, we can achieve our goals.
It is my fervent hope that even with online studies, you were still able to form friendships that withstood the test of group work and assignments. That networking and some of those friendships may last beyond your academic careers and into your professional lives. Continue to nurture those relationships.
As you reflect on the journey you have completed and on what lies ahead, I ask that you consider how you can have a positive influence in all that you do in the future. In addition to your professional lives, mentor a student, contribute towards scholarships for bright but financially challenged students, advocate for your university in various fora, and stay in touch with us through the various social networking facilities that have been set up for this purpose.
We wish you the very best as you continue on your chosen paths.
Blessings!
Professor Sir Hillary Beckles Vice-ChancellorMESSAGE FOR GRADUATING CLASS 2022
Do not let your success be limited by self-doubt, but let it be inspired by your unique Caribbean spirit. You are all intelligent and fully capable individuals who can give back to society, while continuing to develop talents and skills to better yourselves. Set personal goals, stay motivated and be persistent about your future and what you want it to look like. Succeeding at UWI is simply the first step.
It gives me great pleasure to address you, the Graduating Class of 2022, on the culmination of years of hard work and sacrifice. For many of you, this moment is filled with opposing emotions, especially after the challenging period that we have all endured. However, you have persisted, you have endured, and you are here. After our two-year campus closure, it is my utmost privilege to issue this first face-to-face graduation message as Campus Principal to celebrate your major milestone.
This is a crucial time of your lives. Take pride in this achievement in spite of the stresses and trials of the pandemic. As you contemplate your next steps, look toward the future with the same hope and purpose you had for your studies. You possess something that many do not: the resilience that has taken you through a period of your life that no one predicted. Now it is time to ask, “What of the future?” What will happen after you have received your scroll? What will drive your next decisions?
As the first St Augustine graduates after a pandemic, it is time for you to reflect deeply on what makes you who you are as a person. The strength that is evidenced by the fact that you have reached this far should be enough to power you forward. You all have the potential to make your mark on the world as Caribbean people.
The future indeed holds many challenges, but considering the trials you have undergone, your unrelenting spirit has helped you to stay the course, and it is exactly the ingredient needed to make a better future. I am optimistic that the graduating class of 2022 will go on to leave behind a legacy that will lay the foundation for future generations to continue to change the world. You have a responsibility to utilise the education that you worked so hard for at this institution to help inform how the world looks at climate change, pollution, criminal justice, mental health, and politics. You will be called upon to carve yourself a new path. Rise up and bravely accept these challenges.
As you, your family and friends celebrate this momentous occasion, take some time to remember those who have helped you all to make it to this space. Acknowledge those who have held your hand, and those who have lent a supportive ear during the past few years. Take a moment to thank them for their support, love, and appreciation. Be the light rising from the west; be the one who thinks outside of the box; be the legacy of The UWI.
In closing, I offer some words of inspiration — go out show us and yourself what innovation and creativity you can harness. Make, not just us, but, more importantly, yourselves proud.

Graduating from The UWI St Augustine Campus in 1971 with a BSc in Tropical Agriculture, Dr Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted went on to become the first and only (at that time) female agriculture officer in the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands and Fisheries in Tobago, and a researcher at The UWI’s Faculty of Natural Sciences two years later.
Building on the lessons learnt from her grandmother growing up in Reform Village, Gasparillo in the 1950s and 60s, Dr Thilsted took her passion for wanting nourishment for all – especially those in the developing world. After marrying and moving to Denmark in 1974, she became a Veterinary Faculty for Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) Fellow at Denmark’s Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (RVAU), earning her doctorate in 1980. Later in her journey, she found herself in Tanzania as an FAO Associate Expert first, and then as Associate Head, teaching and researching at two universities. Eventually, she returned to Denmark and assumed the role of Head of the Department of Animal Physiology at RVAU.
Her research into aquatic foods and malnutrition prevention, for which she is best known and most recognised, began in 1986 when she and her family moved to Dhaka, Bangladesh. Here, she worked as the Nutrition Coordinator of the International Centre for Diahorreal Disease Research, identifying children who needed treatment for malnutrition and recommending them for allotments of home rations from the World Food Programme. In her five years there, she worked with UNICEF and the national nutrition councils, and advocated for nourishment of children and mothers, as well as breastfeeding.
When she returned to Denmark in 1991, she assembled a team
and focused her research on the small indigenous fish that made up Bangladesh’s traditional dishes. Learning of the fish’s incredible macronutrient value, she began her campaign of empowering the people of Asia and Africa with the means through which they could make proper nourishment more widespread. This, she achieved through curriculum development and capacity-building at the local universities and research centres, advising on governmental policies, and introducing the locals to adapted fishing and farming practices that would improve indigenous food production, all while promoting reduced waste. Her focus on nourishment rather than simply feeding the hungry was impactful in several fundamental ways. The idea of a well-nourished mother giving birth to a wellnourished child can have a snowball effect on the community, and Dr Haraksingh Thilsted believes that this foundation setting of good health for a child was good for both national and global development.
For her ground-breaking research and critical insights Dr Haraksingh Thilsted was awarded the 2021 World Food Prize.

Ingrid Leslie-Anne Lashley, the eldest of a family of three girls, has been on a journey powered by a “combination of confidence and bad mind” her entire life. Breaking the glass ceiling before she knew it existed (the title of her 2018 TEDx Port-of-Spain talk), she allowed nothing to inhibit her potential. A powerhouse in the business and banking sectors, Ingrid’s passions and her competitive spirit inspired her journey, as well as her dedication to charity work, and her love for Trinbago’s culture of music and mas.
A brilliant visionary, for eighteen years, Ingrid moved through various senior positions in trusteeships and merchant banking, financial control, and private banking at Scotiabank, concluding her stint with the multinational bank in the role of General Manager of Scotia Trust and Merchant Bank Trinidad and Tobago Limited. Moving forward, Ingrid became a force for change when she became a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Mortgage Financing Company Limited’s (TTMF) executive team. As a Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer – the first woman to sit in these roles at TTMF – she married organisational and individual interests by achieving financial success for the organisation, while providing access to loans for thousands of people seeking to become firsttime homeowners. She retired from their employ in 2017.
Receiving her Master’s in Business Administration in Accounting and Finance from McGill University, Montreal, Ingrid is also a credentialed Certified
Management Accountant (CMS), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), and Chartered Accountant (CA).
As of September 2022, she holds directorships in the Eco-Industrial Development Company of Tobago Ltd, West Indian Tobacco Company Ltd, CL Financial Group, PowerGen, and Angostura. Additionally, she is Chairperson of the Bourse Securities Group and sits on the Board of National Enterprises Ltd. She retains membership in the Quality Assurance Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Trinidad and Tobago, is on the Board of Management for her alma mater, Bishop Anstey High School, and the Rainbow Rescue home for displaced boys, and serves as Treasurer for the Board of the Caribbean Med Labs Foundation.
To say Ingrid has devoted her life solely to her pursuits in business would be myopic. Despite her hectic schedule and enviable list of professional achievements, she holds credentials in piano and dance, and is known as an accomplished bass pan player. Ingrid also holds the title of former Inter-Bank calypso queen.
With over forty-three years of experience under her belt, Rosalind Gabriel has seen more Carnival portrayals than most seasoned mas players. The seventy-three-year-old has been heavily involved in mas, from costume designs based in the spirit of Carnival, to the creation of bands for entire families. Starting in her childhood in the 1950s, Gabriel’s fascination with Carnival was honed while she watched the mas bands pass in front of her Stone Street, Port of Spain home on their routes.
Learning the basics of Carnival craft at a Wayne Berkeley mas camp, Rosalind was soon fully immersed in the Carnival experience, debuting her work in 1977, and for the next eleven years, she designed a number of winning costumes for her daughter and son for both public and private competitions. During this time, she had a chance to work with many celebrated mas designers and band leaders such as Peter Minshall, and Steven Le Heung. In 1989, “Court of the Mythical Fire Opal” took the streets on Carnival Monday and Tuesday, signalling Gabriel’s entrance into the mas band arena. Gabriel’s inspired designs have raised the bar for others to follow her, her true inspiration coming from Trinbagonian culture which she holds dear.
Not one to hoard her expertise or craft, she has also created costumes for adults and children both for the carnivals in other Caribbean islands and the United States of America, and she has also facilitated a programme on Children’s Mas at the Mentoring by the Masters programme hosted by the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and the Arts in 2017. In 2018, Gabriel received her Letter of Appointment to the National Carnival Commission’s Board of Commissioners.
Her Kiddies Carnival creations alone have won more than fifty titles across her career, including Large Band of the Year. In addition to these numerous wins over the years, Gabriel has also been the recipient of the Award for Innovation in Mas from the Carnival Institute of Trinidad and Tobago in 2006, and the Hummingbird Medal (Bronze) for Culture in 2007 from the Government of Trinidad and Tobago. In 2022, she became a manager of the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival Bands Association’s Carnival Museum housed at First Citizens Foundation’s Charlotte Street building.
For Gabriel, her passion has made her an advocate for all things Carnival. She is outspoken about the need to preserve mas as the creative artform it has always been. She is also acutely aware of the disparity of access and has also contributed to charitable efforts aimed at helping those who are more financially constrained to participate in the Carnival revelry. For Gabriel, more should be done to make Carnival more sustainable and enjoyable for all, and she has dedicated her career to this effort.
Born in 1931 in the small village of Plymouth, Tobago, Robert Alphonso Nelson is one of the greatest entertainers to have graced the stage. With a career that has spanned the better part of sixty years, Lord Nelson, or ‘Nello’ as he is affectionately called, has travelled across the world – from St Lucia, to Miami, Europe to South America – spreading his music and love across all cultures.
Taking up residence early in his life in the United States, Lord Nelson was drafted to the US Army, and quickly deployed to fight in the Korean War. When deployed in Korea, he discovered his talent for performing when he decided to sing for his fellow troops on the weekends. Here, he sang popular Calypsoes and patterned himself after Calypsonians like the Mighty Sparrow, Melody, and Lord Kitchener.
After the war, he discovered his fame and fortune by singing the songs of the popular calypsonians of the day within the Caribbean communities in Brooklyn, Harlem, and Greenwich Village. He thrived as a headliner for some time, and even performed at local festivals and Carnival celebrations. Mentored by Calypsonian The Mighty Duke, Lord Nelson soon began to compose his own materials and gave birth to such classics as “La La”, “Meh Lover”, and “Stella”. His 1964 hit, “Stella”, was so popular that it became the first and only Calypso to be dramatised and performed on a stage. In 1976, Lord Nelson was a mainstay on every island for every Carnival, festival, or party.
His tunes incorporated African drums, R&B, American Jazz and
Latin beats which made his offerings stand out to those in the diaspora. He was often called a foreigner due to his love of incorporating soul music into his Calypsoes. His melange of styles was referred to as ‘Soul Calypso’ and was the source from which Soca – in name and in genre – was born.
Wearing his signature style of dress that incorporates a brightly coloured jumpsuit with matching jacket, shoes and cap, Lord Nelson has performed his way into the hearts of many. He was dubbed the ‘People’s King’ in 1989, and in 2007, he was the recipient of the Hummingbird Medal (Gold) for Calypso and Culture from the Government of Trinidad and Tobago in 2017, and the Johnnie Walker Black Pioneer Award, and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.
Today, Lord Nelson still performs every year at Skinner Park, and looks forward to seeing his contribution to Trinidad and Tobago and Caribbean music being recognised for generations to come.
Born in 1971 in Port of Spain, Trinidad, Dr Wayne Frederick’s early life dealing with a medical diagnosis that caused him to be frequently at the hospital sparked an interest in him for the world of science. During his younger years, he would often accompany his mother who worked as a nurse.
This one-on-one experience with the medical field influenced him to pursue science, and after graduating from secondary school, Dr Frederick moved to the United States and enrolled at Howard University in 1988 – at the age of 16 – to pursue a dual degree programme, Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Doctor of Medicine (MD). Within six years he received his Bachelor of Science degree and graduated medical school at the age of 22. Dr Frederick returned to Howard University in 2011 to pursue a Master of Business Administration at the School of Business.
Specialising in Surgical Oncology, Dr Frederick trained under LaSalle D. Leffall Jr, from 1994-1999 at the Howard University Hospital. LaSalle D. Leffall Jr was the first African American surgeon to serve as President of the American Cancer Society (1978), and as President of the American College of Surgeons (1995).
After his time in training, Dr Frederick chose to pursue his postdoctoral research in Oncology, and took up an Oncology fellowship at the Department of Surgical Oncology, MD Anderson Cancer Centre at the University of Texas, Houston from 1999-2001. This continued as a Surgical Oncology fellowship at the MD Anderson Cancer Centre from 2001-2003.
In 2010, he was appointed Associate Dean for Clinical Strategy and Operations, and he has been a tenured Professor of Surgical Oncology in Howard University’s Department of Surgery since 2011.
With the foresight to encourage meaningful career advancement opportunities for graduates of the MBBS programme at UWI, Dr Frederick has served as an external examiner in Surgery for the MBBS round of Surgery Exams in 2012 (UWI). He has repeatedly expressed confidence in the abilities of the MBBS graduates to obtain residency spots at the Howard University Hospital.
In 2014, he was appointed the 17th President of Howard University, and was bestowed the distinguished Charles R. Drew Endowed Chair of Surgery at the Howard University College of Medicine. As President, he has worked assiduously to strengthen internal operations to enhance the student experience, and also helped established the Bison STEM Scholars programme to increase the number of underrepresented students in STEM Masters, and Masters/Doctorate programmes. He sees his duty as one to awaken students’ purposes in life so that they could become more than just alumni, but visionaries and world-changers.
Dr Frederick continues to see patients and practice medicine at the Howard University Hospital as a cancer surgeon.
Dr. Wayne A.I. Frederick Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc)
Ever since she was a child, Ashleigh knew that a career in nutrition was her life goal. Nutrition had always been at the forefront of her mind, and for as long as she could remember, she has been fascinated by the interaction between nutrition, mood, weight and overall health.
However, the journey towards her BSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics started off a little bumpy as science subjects were always very challenging for her, causing her parents to employ the support of the best lessons teachers available. But this was a challenge that Ashleigh was ready to take on, and she had her sights set on her goal. Inspired by her personal life, her struggles with her own health, as well as those of her parents, Ashleigh pushed on. Ashleigh attributes her success to the unwavering support of her parents throughout her life – from their constant presence at her extracurricular activities, academic and educational functions, and even her social life, to their lack of hesitancy whenever she needed additional academic help. Ashleigh notes her mother as her major inspiration and influence: “I will forever be appreciative for the sacrifices she makes for her family without hesitation or desire for praise.” Her father also holds a special place in her heart as the backbone of the family, his constant presence acting as the strength that she and her mother needed through the tough times. Their dedication continues influence her motivation towards dedicating her adult life to repaying them for their sacrifice, and to making them proud.
After sixth form, Ashleigh made the decision to embark on a career in Nutrition and Dietetics and was fortunate The UWI met all her needs.
UWI offered the diverse and holistic programme that she sought, while being thankfully in the neighbourhood, so she did not have to give up her mother’s amazing homecooked food. Of course, learning about the vibrant campus life described to her by a recruitment officer was enough to get her to feel as if her place was indeed at the UWI campus, and she did not hesitate to register, and soon felt right at home.
When reflecting on her experience at The UWI, Ashleigh often relies on a quote by Demosthenes to describe her true feelings: “Small opportunities are often the beginning of great enterprises.” Stepping out of her comfort zone at as a student allowed her to seize opportunities when they came, thus ensuring life lessons were learnt.
Ashleigh looks toward the future while paying homage to the past, and continues to contribute to her country and the Caribbean region. Using the tools she has been given to the benefit of others – to her, this is what it means to Be UWI.
Ms. Ashleigh Franchesca Anna-Maria Lai Faculty of Food and Agriculture Bachelor of Science Human Nutrition and Dietetics (Special) First Class Honours
Mr. Reyshard Anthony Deokiesingh
Faculty of Engineering
BSc Engineering, Industrial Engineering First Class Honours
One of the biggest lessons Reyshard has learnt through his UWI experience is that the more you selflessly put others first, the more you gain as an individual.
This life lesson has helped him navigate his UWI experience in a positive way, and has encouraged him to become a more progressive and productive individual. Reyshard’s success can also be attributed to his support system, combined with his perseverance and recognition that his only competition is himself. He has found joy and strength in spending time with his friends and family who continuously encouraged him to be his best.
A resident of Siparia, Reyshard is one of four boys, and has had the blessing of parents who have supported him from day one. Reyshard attended Palo Seco Secondary School, and then moved to Iere High School where his love for Engineering developed. His plans to pursue science subjects were frustrated by inadequate grades, so instead, he pursued and attained distinctions in business and mathematics subjects at the CSEC level. His love for science and his intention to pursue Engineering as a career, however, were indomitable. Reyshard studied the science subjects privately, and he successfully earned passes in them.
Building on his momentum, he continued on to a National Engineering Technician’s Diploma in Electrical and Electronics
Engineering from the University of Trinidad and Tobago. After its completion, he entered The UWI to pursue a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, but soon realised that Industrial Engineering was where his true passion lay. Pursuing this area of engineering ignited in Reyshard a feeling of excitement and purpose, and the UWI experience allowed him the opportunity to grow academically, and as an individual. The skills that he developed at The UWI stands out for Reyshard as they were skills that he recognised he may not have gained at any place other than The UWI.
Now, as Reyshard enters this new chapter in his life, he plans to find his place in the energy and manufacturing sectors to utilise his experience and knowledge to help the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
Ms. Portia Naomi Gopaul Faculty of Social Sciences BSc Psychology Special
Hailing from the southland, Portia, at twenty-two years old, is the eldest girl in her family. Taking her inspiration from her parents, she’s developed a faith in God that has allowed her to have a foundation firm enough to be able to traverse any circumstance.
Trying her best to walk in her parent’s footsteps has allowed her to listen to her passion for helping others. This passion led her to pursuing a degree in Psychology at The UWI. The act of helping others was something that came naturally to Portia, and through her choice of programme, she was able to learn that she can ensure that those who are suffering silently would be able to find their voice again and heal their wounds. Having benefited from the listening ears of her friends and family, who have always been willing to encourage her and support her, Portia knew that Psychology was the most obvious choice, and UWI’s programme shone brighter than the other options as it best aligned with her own personal goals.
When she got on to campus, she also found that the friendliness of staff and students continued to set UWI above the rest. Her experience on campus was a positive one, filled with kindness from landscaper and lecturer alike, and memories of long conversations with friends on rainy days over a cup of coffee. At UWI, she found her place seamlessly.
The St Joseph’s Convent San Fernando alumnus has always had a supportive village around her, whether it be her parents, grandparents, or members of her church, Faith Centre. She attributes much of her success to her faith and her village from which she has constantly drawn strength through prayer, sharing her fears with her parents, or having a relaxing time with her brother and friends. Her persistence through her experience has made it possible for her to achieve greatness at such a young age. For her, UWI has cultivated in her the ability to keep persevering no matter the obstacle. She intends to keep fighting for her dreams.
Mr. Kobe Nathan Sandy Faculty of Social Sciences
When Kobe Sandy chose UWI, he decided that his experience was going to make him unapologetically expressive and opinionated, and allow him to channel his intellect to make his mark within the Caribbean region – an aspiration that may not be so farfetched for Kobe as he holds former Prime Minister, Patrick Manning, as one of his major inspirations. Mr Manning’s vision for the development of Trinidad and Tobago as well as his investment in youth have given Kobe enough incentive to plan his future to take on the duty of leadership.
For Kobe, his goal of making Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean region a better place through effective policy making and service to others has motivated him to succeed academically. Having an interest in politics since he was just ten years old, Kobe was able to see how his degree could be a direct pipeline to those goals, as his profound passions for representation and advocacy made a career in the public service the most sensible choice for him. As a result, when it came time to choose from a list of possible alternatives after his dream of getting into the LLB programme was denied, there emerged a clear winner. After extensive research, he realised the impact the knowledge to be gleaned from the Public Sector Management with Law programme would have on his future.
Born in Egypt Village, Point Fortin, Kobe was surrounded by his extended family who all played a crucial role in his development, and from Vessigny Secondary School to St Joseph High School in Georgetown, Guyana, Kobe had his village to rely on through the best and worst times. Adopting the selfless attitude he’d seen among his community growing up and being able to put the interests of others above his own was something that became a part of who Kobe was as a person. His faith in God has given him the wisdom and grace to sacrifice and work hard toward his main objective.
Whenever he looks back on his UWI experience now, he sees the fruits of his years of labour and feels undiluted joy.
BSc Public Sector Management with Law for the Social Sciences (Special) First Class Honours
Ms. Patti-Anne Natalia Amina Ali Faculty of Humanities and Education BA Literatures in English First Class Honours
Growing up was anything but boring for Patti-Anne as she hails from a family of creatives and big personalities. Being raised by her well-known father, Ian Ali – Master Artist and Cultural Activist, and the creator of television shows such as Rikki Tikki and Looking Around – and an equally brilliant mother, Carolyn Ali – who authored such books as Recipes from the Indian Dancer – Patti-Anne had everything she needed to be great.
Attending St Augustine Girls’ High School, then the Creative Arts Centre, as well as the New York Conservatory for the Dramatic Arts, Patti-Ane created the foundation for her career in the creative field. She went on to build a successful career in both the arts and advertising as an actor, writer, director, and producer, forming the arts and advertising company Sugar House.
Ever ravenous for greater things, Patti-Anne continued to feel the urge building within her to deepen her knowledge and skillset. This led her to seek out The UWI’s Literatures in English and Theatre Arts programmes. Choosing UWI meant that she was going to be challenged by the rich and diverse courses, as well as achieving a respected and well-regarded degree.
Building on her early family life that was filled with opportunities to create and explore, Patti Anne knew that these programmes were exactly what she needed to connect with her childhood. Growing up in a home that was filled with art, stories, songs, performances, and the ability to uplift and enlighten, Patti-Anne is familiar with a life ‘unplugged’ as most of her humble childhood was spent without screentime. This allowed her and her three sisters to release their fears and limitations, and embrace the possibilities of growth and discovery.
However, embarking on her degree was not without life-changing events. With only one year of the face-to-face class experience, the
COVID-19 the pandemic forced all lectures online. This adjustment was not without compromise, but her lecturers were able to go above and beyond to make the online UWI experience both enlightening and engaging.
Following the unexpected passing of her father in 2007, Patti-Anne was able to take solace in the strength of her mother who kept the family strong in the aftermath, and continues to find inspiration in the woman who lives each day with ambition and determination. Patti-Anne also credits her success to her sister, her friends, and Belinda Barnes of the National Theatre Arts Company of Trinidad and Tobago from whom she has received unending encouragement and motivation to engage in the struggle of juggling full-time work and classes. Looking toward the future, PattiAnne hopes to continue to create experiences for people, and remind them of their own goodness and power. Through the page, stage, or screen, she will continue to embrace the philosophy of what she believes it means to “Be UWI”, a philosophy of academic excellence, Caribbean advancement and critical thinking, with a heavy helping of creative inspiration.
Ms. Kiana Natalia Gajadhar Faculty of Medical Sciences Bachelor of Science, Pharmacy First Class Honours
A young lady with humble beginnings from the island of St Lucia, Kiana often finds herself occupied in some venture, whether it is spending hours reading or delving into research of an obscure topic that has come to mind, or creating something new and tasty in the kitchen. A graduate of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Kiana had a keen interest in the sciences, mathematics, and accounting when she was younger, which made the choice of a future career challenging.
She was thankfully blessed with having access to numerous internships, including the auspicious internship at Victoria Hospital that introduced her to the vast pharmaceutical field. It was this internship, which showed her how she could blend her passions for science, computation and business, that guided her toward the Pharmacy programme – or, as she would say, it led her to where she could be chosen by the Pharmacy programme.
The next step after discovering her true passion was finding a reputable university that would have a comprehensive curriculum, as well as be internationally recognised. The UWI fit that bill perfectly.
Inspired by the sacrifice of her parents, and their ability to have a positive outlook during difficult times, Kiana learnt that her goals should be limitless. Their tenacity for achieving their own goals has allowed her to remain focused, work smart, and continue on despite challenges. Refusing to constraint herself to just her academics, she also invested her time at UWI’s St Lucian Students’ Association, where she occupied the role of PRO, and then Vice President.
The association helped her experience a “home away from home”, interacting with her fellow Lucians, planning events, and celebrating cultural days. Kiana was also inspired to become a member of the Rotaract Club of Mt Hope and found the time to act as the Assistant Secretary of the Trinidad & Tobago Organisation of Pharmacy Students. Her service, curiosity and desire to learn, as well as her trust in Go, and a steady support system, have all paved the road to success on her academic journey.
For Kiana, the future looks bright as she intends to further her education in hopes of becoming an inspiration to younger generations. She plans to be part of the movement towards propelling pharmacists to maximise their full potential in the development of a more robust health system. In looking to her future goals, she plans to embrace the challenges and experiences, and use them to elevate herself and continue to inspire others.
